Online Art Marketing Coach

Does anyone have any experience dealing with online marketing coaches for artists? Cory Huff comes up frequently, has anyone actually taken any of his courses, or one on one consults? I know that social media marketing is the way to go to get traffic moving in my direction and and looking for the best crash course around, so any information is wonderful!

as far as i'm concerned the only money being made is the coach doing the class. you can have people talk it up, but unless its related to your art, and your specific art, it most likely won't apply. not to mention you can get lots of free info from youtube.

Xavier,

Do you want lessons in marketing? Or someone to cheer you on?

Lessons in marketing are often free and very well taught.

Having someone do a lot of extra cheering is nonsense that will not come for free.

The lecture notes are easy to read and totally free. MIT's Sloan School offers some other courses in marketing as well.

Cory contacted me several years ago when he was just starting out. He was collecting advice from working artists. He has worked very hard to build a business for himself. I don't know any artists who have taken his fee courses. I listened to some free lectures years ago and still get his e mail.

You get what you pay for. As Marlene says, some people work very hard to build a business and they learn a LOT along the way.

This next bit is NOT to you Xavier.......I'm getting so fed up to be totally honest of people moaning about the cost of paying for good marketing help and that you should go get it free.... But if the same was said about your art then you would be up in arms...... Skill, time, supplies. Blah blah. Not to mention the time it took to learn your craft.

It is always worth taking a structured course where you can ask questions and get good, tailored, advice for your own business. A business is only as good as the person running it. That knowledge alone is the first thing all businesses learn so, the person running it should be fully armed with all the right things to do for THEIR business. Marketing can be learned free but marketing for a hairdressers is far different than marketing for a butcher and sometimes you need to streamline the learning for the one needing it.

So now you have mentioned this name I will be looking into the courses and costs as I'm quite willing to pay for expertise.

Thank you Xavier for this thread

Xavier, get a copy of the book "Art Inc., the essential guide for building your career as an artist" by Lisa Congdon. it might help you.

Abbie,

I pay for a lot of goods. I pay for a gym membership that I use somewhat.

Personally I have mixed feelings about people pitching some services.
I could get an instructor at the gym, but from what I have seen they are overpriced
and often kind of using some of the people in the gym. Perhaps if I was richer I would not feel used.

We have an endless parade of people, not advisors necessarily, trying to rip off artists. We
have websites phishing us....etc.....

It is honest to be very wary when it comes to artist's services.

That said, I have no idea who Cory Huff is or the costs of his help. He could be very helpful.

I will dig up a link for this thread. I need to know more.

my feelings are, try the free advice, if it works, use it. if it doesn't, pay for it.

the coaching reminds me of the mid 90's when there was this asian guy talking about how to make millions flipping houses. he only hinted on what he did, while in his yacht, with his bikini babes next to him. and the one that made the money was him, the guy telling you how to make the money. i don't know how many fell for it, and how many really made money off of it.

there are many things to pay for, but there is a lot of good free stuff as well. a whole lot. look at it all. cross reference things and try those out. if this was before the net and there was a coach, then i'd say, sure, give it a try. but the net has a lot of free info as well.

Well said, Abbie.
Two dear friends of ours have built their careers as public speakers, teaching business owners the most basic thing...how to treat customers.
Should everyone know how to treat their customers? sure....but they don't.
Should public speakers who train businesses in various aspects of their businesses for maximum success be paid? you betcha.

BTW, Cory spent a few years offering only free courses...and many still are available for free.

Xavier, here is a link to artbusiness.com and there is a wealth of information in the form of free articles, many of which I have read and find very informative.

http://www.artbusiness.com/artists.html

Here is a short bio on the sites founder. Site principal, Alan Bamberger, is an art consultant, advisor, author, and independent appraiser specializing in research, appraisal, and all business and market aspects of original works of art, artist manuscript materials, art-related documents, and art reference books. He has been selling art since 1979 and rare and scholarly art reference books since 1982, and has been consulting and appraising for artists, galleries, businesses, organizations and collectors since 1985.

Cory's pricing is more than reasonable. He clearly discusses what he will teach. Much of what he teaches
is basic, but his webinars build on themselves quite clearly.

He seems perfectly honest and inexpensive. My apologies to Cory Huff. He also knows how many charlatans are out there,
which is probably why he is offering a good service.

Each of us has blind spots and either have to avoid those areas of weakness or learn more.

Xavier if you feel your marketing efforts are not enough, Cory's classes are inexpensive clear advice.

Dave

I want to think everyone for your well thought out and considerate responses. I think the best advice is to follow what Cory offers for free which appears to be abundant, just like the name of his service, the abundantartist.com. I have actually read through half way the book Art Inc. and had to stop at using social media which is the crux of the matter here. Having this discussion with you guys is clearly the beginning of this process for me.

So, does anyone know how to use fineartamerica's social media features? It seems to me that it works a little like Facebook for artists, and that the more traffic you create by participating on a regular basis, the higher up the search engine you appear. Does this website have help pages on how to use it in promoting yourself?

Xavier,

Bring people to your Artists Website from Social Media.

No other way is nearly as important.
