Discussing Adjustment Layers In Ps

A few days ago we had a very successful discussion about blend modes here in the forum.

I want to follow that up with a discussion of Adjustment Layers.

This video is highly organized and simple.

The last thread opened up a whole lot of tools for me in PS. I think it help others as well.

Hiya David,

I just call them layers. Without layers Photoshop would be the same as trying to paint without colors. I use layers for everything including the twinkles in eyes. It makes creating images mistake free. If you make a mistake on a layer, just trash it because it won't affect your original image in any way. The very first thing I learned in Photoshop was how to work in layers. To me, it's what photoshop is all about. Some 20 years ago when I first learned how to work in Photoshop I was creating 50, 60 and even 80 layers to create an image. But now through merging I usually wind up with 5 or 10 layers for my finished piece. Here bis the very first pice I created entirely in Photoshop. It took me approximately 86 layers to create "Beethoven' Sanctuary." http://www.haroldshull.com/id7.html I could probably do the same piece today with only 15 or 20 layers. Very good thread David.

Very interesting work Harold, imagine 20 years ago PS could do that. 1995.

I first heard of PS in 1996.

David, that was a great video, thank you for sharing. I learned some great tricks. I have always tried taking my photos to the best of my ability so that I can use less of photoshoot but I see how much it can be helpful in some cases..

There are some very good videos by a guy called Blake Rudis. He has a web site called Every Day HDR http://everydayhdr.com/
He deals with layers and blend if options and has loads of helpful free stuff. It's not all to do with HDR stuff but basic photography as well

David, I think Photoshop was created in the late 80s. Some of my friends were bugging me to take up Photoshop and were telling me that I would take to it like a duck takes to water. They were right. Before Photoshop, my favorite program was QuarkXpress. It still is a favorite of mine but - PHOTOSHOP RULES. If it weren't for Photoshop my art career would have come to an end in the mid 90s. I was amazed at what layers, levels, image adjustments, history, brushes and all the plug-ins could accomplish. I still am. I taught myself the program in about 6 months. But I'm still learning more each time I use it.

David, this is what my hand looked like a few days ago. Note: This is not for the squeamish, if you have a weak stomach, don't look. http://fineartamerica.com/featured/my-hand-harold-shull.html This is when my hands were almost healed. Before this my hands and forearms swelled up like ball park franks and I couldn't close my hands at all. With all the blisters on my hands, I could do some minor jobs but with a lot of pain. Now that the blisters are starting to go away, I am more able to type on the keyboard and brush my teeth and do the daily chores one must do to socialize with other people. But on the whole I tried to keep my hands hidden from view in order to not make people sick. The pains I am experiencing now are more from the Carpal Syndrome. Just some minor pains from the blisters.
