Windows 10 Upgrade

Did anyone upgrade to Windows 10 today? Like it? Don't? Is it truly free or is it just a trial?

(Please be adults and don't turn this into a Mac vs PC p-ing contest - thanks)

It's free.

I have read that if you have windows 8 or 8.1, you should update now. If you have Windows 7, wait.

Why wait? Still a few things that need improvement, and will be in a month or two. I'm going to download it, and wait until later to install

If I understand it correctly, Windows 7 users will be nothing more than beta testers if installed now. No thanks. I do hope it's as wonderful as it's supposed to be but I'd rather they address the major bugs before I download it.

Every time I do one of these types of upgrades, I find myself regretting it.
Gonna leave well enough alone.
I don't like being a beta tester much.

I have Win7 working perfectly and see no reason to mess with 10 yet.

I have 8.1 (and apparently am one of the rare people who likes it) but I'm in no hurry to upgrade. Let the people who love to jump at every update find the issues first and I'll take a look at it once they have a chance to iron out the inevitable kinks.

I don't even know what I am upgrading so most definitely will not be doing it!

i'm not messing with 10. 7 works fine. i thought 8 looked stupid, and 10 is pretty much 8 with a start menu.... i find it odd with all the protection they put on windows, the fact they charge you again if you change your hard drive... and this one is free?

I have 8.1 love it! Signed up for the free 10 and it said it would notify me through my desktop when available. Curious as to how it is as well.

A tech guru on g+ installed it and was actually impressed. There were a couple of restarts he was not expecting as it loaded drivers he didn't think it would and then he was pleased with it.

He said his task bar is normally full but that was doubled with new things but once he saw what they were he was pleased also.

I'm itching to get my free upgrade....l love 8 and know I will adore 10

It installed this morning. Took about 1.5 hours without any problems. I didn't like Windows 8 but this upgrade seemed to correct that. So far I haven't run into any problems. It looks a lot more polished.

BTW: If you don't want to wait for the notification you can force upgrade by following the steps at: http://venturebeat.com/2015/07/28/how-to-force-windows-to-start-downloading-the-windows-10-update-files/

I still live my XP LOL

Alfred, I wish I could still use XP, the last good Windows operating system. Here at work we are on 7 and I don't believe the company is planning on "upgrading" any time soon. My laptop at home has 7 and I'm leaving it as is. I have a Surface Pro that has 8 on it and I don't really care for it, (my version does have a start menu though. ???) so am not planning on "upgrading" though I very rarely use my tablet anyway.

The computers I uses for my robotics classes are XP and they have upgrade constantly. Every single day they seem to want to download some upgrade.
....

At home I have 8.1 and find it works fine after my teenager showed me how to just bypass "touch pad" type screens and get to work.

"Free" always has a catch. I haven't been notified that I can download 10 yet. I think I'll wait a few weeks to see what happens.

I love my Chromebook for everyday Internet stuff. Never any problems. Just works. No viruses, no bugs, updates automatically.

I have a Nvidia gpu and it seems there are issues with Nvidia and Windows 10 so I'll wait a bit till all the bugs are worked out.

Here's a related question for all.

I have a client that has XP on his/wife's computer. she passed away 7 years ago and it hasn't been used, if any over that time. His broadband was working, but his modem died sometime ago. Is it possible to begin to get his XP updated? Must be thousands of "updates" since he last used that computer,

Rich

I'm on Win 7 and think it's fine for now, won't switch until I hear good news about it.

I'm happy with the 8.1 version. I'm not planning on upgrading it unless Microsoft forces me to like they forced me to upgrade from 8 to 8.1

Edward Fielding

XP seems to update automatically but I think MS has stopped supporting it.

"After 12 years, support for Windows XP ended April 8, 2014. There will be no more security updates or technical support for the Windows XP operating system. It is very important that customers and partners migrate to a modern operating system such as Windows 8.1.

I am on 10.10.4... works great, oh wait sorry, you didn't want this to be a Mac vs PC thing.....

I do agree with what others have said though, I use PC's for work and the last Win OS I really liked was XP

There hasn't been any support on Windows XP for a while now.

I downloaded and uploaded Windows 10 this morning. No issues here yet. Microsoft Edge is fast. The only message I received was from Norton who told me Edge doesn't like add-ons and to use Mozilla or Internet Explorer.

My PC now starts with my desktop screen. With Windows 8.1, it opened up to the start menu tiles.

I unpinned many applications I don't or wouldn't use from the start menu. Like Cortana, who is the personal talking assistant. I get annoyed with my Garmin lady and don't need to be listening to this one. I disabled Siri on my phone.

With any change, I had to redo all my favorites in Edge and customize the colors, background, etc.

Go for it!

all i know is, i'm not paying monthly just so i can use my computer. i'd probably have to switch to linux at that point. i'm not sure the gov would allow that though.

I upgraded today from Windos 8.1. It went very well. So far only one thing I was not happy with - I had to put in the passwords to my e-mail accounts anew. I have a lot, and one I cannot remember...

@Mike Savad

Myerson clarified that Windows 10 users will still get free updates and support for the lifetime of the OS, exactly like past versions of Windows (like XP and Windows 7's Service Packs, for example). There's no subscription model for updates or support or continuing to use the OS. Myerson's reference to Windows "as a service" simply meant that Microsoft plans to update the OS with smaller, more regular updates rather than the big, chunky updates of past Service Packs. A year after Windows 10 is first available, it will no longer be a free upgrade for Windows 7 and 8 users. Microsoft will then sell Windows 10 the same way it has sold past versions of Windows. MS hasn't set a specific price yet, but Myerson said the price will likely be comparable to past versions of Windows. Windows 8 costs $120 on Amazon, for instance.

You could run Photoshop under Wine in Linux with a slight performance hit. My better half installed this one on one of the laptops and it looks very nice: https://elementary.io/ (If you like the OSX interface)

Jessica,

For this very example, I always buy the CD when offered. Just a few bucks more, but it's on your shelf, if needed.

This link shows that Adobe still supports PSE 10,11,12,13

Call them and let them walk you through the process

OR go get the new PSE13!

@Mike Willett...

Your experience was not what the other 75 million people have experienced. Certainly there were some others with similar experiences......

Cortana has also told half a million jokes.

Since its release four weeks ago, 75 million devices are now running Microsoft’s new Windows 10 operating system, said Yusuf Mehdi, the company’s Corporate Vice President of Marketing for Windows and Devices.

In comparison, Windows 8 needed six months to reach 100 million license sales, and seems to validate Microsoft’s strategy to release Windows 10 as a free upgrade.

In a series of tweets, Mehdi also revealed that the OS has been downloaded in 192 countries, and more than 122 years of gameplay had been streamed from the company’s video game console Xbox One to Windows 10 devices.

Windows 10 has been enjoying stellar reviews since its release, and early bugs found the system are being addressed by the company.

I upgraded to 10 & I love it. But I'm still lost at certain items. Like uploading my photos from my camera & also my files are totally mixed up. Well I think I have to relean....and reorganize my photoes. But all in all I like it

Bob Galka

Jessica... you can now relax and know that for the life of your laptop you will always have the latest version of Microsoft's Operating System... and you will get all updates and new features as soon as they are available... not have to wait for a new version upgrade.

"In comparison, Windows 8 needed six months to reach 100 million license sales, and seems to validate Microsoft’s strategy to release Windows 10 as a free upgrade. "

Well, that may be the case. But I would bet that the rush to upgrade to 10 has a whole lot to do with how bad 8 was.

Best Buy manager of my local store told me that in his 20 years in the business he has never seen a better selling tool to sell Apples then Windows 8 was. I asked the guy at Office Depot if that was his experience also, and he said yes and he was really ticked off because they do not sell Apples. But people did not want Windows 8.

I know I took my new laptop with 8 back and bought my first Apple. That is the machine my wife uses.

I recently bought a new HP with 10 and had the guy strip it out all of the junk that is not needed.

It is running okay but there is still "junk" that pops up and I have to go remove that crap. That stuff is using resources and should not be on the system.

I have found that Windows 10 has a problem I never had with 7 with the fly down windows in PhotoShop. They fly down okay, but they will not stay open. That is going to be very annoying if it persists and there is no fix.

David Bridburg

Floyd,

I do not know this for sure, but I wonder if their is a setting in the PS performance settings for timing of that.

Addition I do not see it under PS preferences. So I now wonder if 10 has a control somewhere for that.

Bob Galka

Floyd... the rush was because you could have an illegal version of windows 7 or 8 on your compute and Microsoft said that was OK with them.. they would upgrade you and you would now be legal... and it was Free.. you always get a rush of people when you say Free...

Jessica.. oh, yea.. well it still applies ;O)

I have had Windows 10 downloaded on my laptop within the last week because I had Windows 8.1 and was eligible for the free download. I got a bit of a shock when I accidentally inverted the screen and it took me a while to figure out how to fix that. I'm very careful with what I do from here on re changes etc. It allows you to set it things up to suit your own needs virtually and so far I really like what it does with my pictures saved on my laptop. Much easier to manage and organise etc. It even talks to you if you select that mode. It took over an hour to download so one has to allow at least 2 hours for all of that. I didn't need a tech person for that as it virtually does itself. I was getting emails and notification on my laptop for quite a while about this and was asked if I wanted this, which I eventually said yes, so that's how I got this and most probably why I didn't need a techie or the like. Anyway not sure if it's better of not, but I thought it would be a good idea to get it now, considering how things do change and especially before I get too attached to Windows 8.1.

David Bridburg

I liked Windows 8.1. The fuss was mass hysteria as far as I was concerned.

I have upgraded and now my bootup is much slower. But the update process is probably over and the start up wont be so bad.

Everything is working well.

I like free. Mr. Softie is reclaiming market share in the corporate office space. They need company
workers to use Windows at home and in the office or they lose the entire battle. So free is what we get.
This also plays into making a seamless experience going from desktop to cellphone.

I haven't missed a beat. HP upgraded a few things so now I don't have to reboot to find my SD card drive anymore. After that upgrade that annoyance showed up. Gone now.

David Bridburg

I just did some reading on Slow Bootup. It seems this is wide spread. There are some malware issues for many people downloading.

I ran Avast on my system and found three problems. I also disabled one thing on my start up that was not necessary.

I need now to restart the machine and see if it boots faster.

Dave

I just booted the system twice. The first time let the machine configure itself.

The second boot was much much faster. The shutdown times have also dropped dramatically.

What I don't like is that you don't have the option to disable the password sign-in after restart! Not with Windows 10.

I'm still dragging my feet because I don't know how it's gonna mesh with PS 5cs. I can't afford for it not to work. I also have some software specific to my work that hasn't offered an upgrade in a long time, that I also don't know will work with 10.
