Why Are Blueprints Allowed To Be Listed As Photographs?

Might as well get rid of the search function entirely.

Well that is a bit of a knee jerk over reactive statement if you ask me.

Remember, people categorize their own stuff, its not like someone at FAA is saying yay or nay to everything.....its an honor system. If you want you can keep people honest by reporting them.

Joseph C Hinson

What should blue prints be listed as? Is there a more appropriate designation through FAA?

David Smith

Reporting doesn't seem to do any good, unless you name and shame in the forum.

I just did a search on a few basic keywords, selected photograph as the medium, and 90% of the first 20 or so pages are blueprints.

If I were a buyer, I'd give up after a couple of pages. Not good for the artists, not good for FAA if a buyer leaves without purchasing anything.

"What should blue prints be listed as?..."

Um, scanned technical artifacts? :)

David Smith

Well, since blueprints start life as a drawing…perhaps…drawing?

Bradford Martin

Wouldn't they be drawings? I never saw it as a problem. Usually the photograph filter works well, but I did discover a photo of a patent drawing just now that is incorrectly labeled as a photograph. 90% is pretty high. I don't know of the rules or procedure.. It sounds like spamming.

David Smith

Search "Lure" and filter for photographs for one example.

Bill Swartwout

Hmmmmm...well, those lures certainly appear to be photographs or scans of someone else's drawings.

What's with statues? Is a photo of a statue not a photo?

Thomas Zimmerman

I've always had great success with reporting things myself.

I agree blueprints should be classified as drawings.

David Smith

Thomas

So far, nothing I've reported has been corrected. Search "golf still life" and see the abstract paintings by the same artist that are filled with keyword spam. Reported him, named him in post months ago, got chastised for it. Still there.

Thomas Zimmerman

A forum post isn't the way to report something. I would either PM a mod or use the form here if you want results.

It doesn't matter what someone posts an image as - FAA isn't in the business of monitoring what kind of image it is. I do think that if reported someone should do something - but - blueprints sell - and if listed as a photograph - it still sells - even if it bumps photographs to the tail of the line.

What are your feelings about alien blueprints?

I did use the contact form.

Roy

Then the medium filter in the search become useless. Your line of reasoning would eventually render the search entirely useless.

Robert

Your image is correctly listed as digital art.

Abbie Shores

Thankfully I am getting some help in the 'office' soon and then I will be able to jump as soon as people ask me to. At the moment I have to prioritise and some things are on my to do list tomorrow, not today, I'm afraid. I did sort loads of keywords I was asked to.

Real blue prints are reproduced via a photographic process - cyanotype I believe.

"Cyanotype is a photographic printing process that produces a cyan-blue print. Engineers used the process well into the 20th century as a simple and low-cost process to produce copies of drawings, referred to as blueprints. The process uses two chemicals: ammonium iron(III) citrate and potassium ferricyanide."

David Smith

Edward

By that logic, everything on FAA would be a photograph since they are all reproductions made via a photographic process.

Jane Linders

Actually, blueprints (also called cyanotypes) are one of the earliest photographic printing processes dating back to the mid 1800's.

David Smith

OK, if people want to get pedantic over the term blueprint, I'll call them what they actually are. Patent drawings.

David Smith

Any of you in this thread who have patent drawings classified as photographs can help Abbie out by switching them to drawing, or digital art or mixed media if you've modified them.

Bradford Martin

As it is now I have hundreds of patent drawings (many with no sales) coming in on the search before you can see my images (some with actual sales). I really don't know why the search is set up that way because it seems if people are not looking for a patent drawing then they probably won't continue to look past the first 100 images to see if FAA had anything that is not a patent drawing. One thing that helps filter them out is restricting the medium to photographs. If every patent drawing was listed as a photograph and came before mine I would no longer be using FAA as my main site.

I think the real issue is the way the search results offer no diversity. Basically if a viewer does not like the first offerings from an FAA high ranked artist, there is little sense in continuing to show only work by that same artist. The search for 'Lure" is a good example and is in large part useless to anyone looking for something else than a patent drawing of a lure. I have the same problem in the search for "oil rigs", but at least there most of the patent drawings are listed as drawings and can be filtered out.

David Smith

Patent drawings are taking over the site in general because they're so easy to do. Download the file from the LOC or patent office and slap it on a background in photoshop.

I could knock out 100 a day manually, and 1000's a day if I used an action.

The most time consuming part would be downloading the pdfs.

Mike Savad

i'd place them in the drawing category. it would at least be fair to those selling photos.

seems the site is overrun by them. hard to call them art though, wish they wouldn't take up every single page. i'd do them, but i can't compromise my artistic standing.

@bradford... exactly. when i do a search, if i was new, i would assume this site was nothing but stock and diagrams. i'm looking for something for my house, and while blueprints are nice, they aren't what i'm looking for. if the search showed a few from each artist (and it does this anyway, i don't know why we have a drop down box, if the same artist covers all the pages) - i think it would be more fair for both the artist and the buyer. each row, 4 from the same artist to get a sampling. then move on. i'm certain my sales are much slower because they took up the first 15 pages or so.

Thanks, David.

Jim and Mike, yes, I get some odd results too and wind up putting quotation marks around two worded tags. I don't know if Boolean searches really work here since quotes are special characters, but so far I've been able to pull some of the items I'm searching. Perhaps it's a digital placebo and I should try some without first. :)

"I know you all appreciate me a great deal more now. LOL"

David we don't sell anything digital here on the FAA side. Its all prints. We label them as to what the original medium was.The digital part is for display on the computer. Its not the product and sometimes i think we lose sight of that. Try not to think too much it gives us a headache sometimes.

David,

When you mention, "We" isn't that "We" just digital representations of living breathing, smelly beings?

David King

When posting on FAA I'm not a person, I'm just one's and zero's. lol

I am expecting a crust of bread later today.

Oh good gravy with these blueprints....90% of the ones listed here are for things after 1923 and infringing on someones copyright. lawyers would have a field day on here if they were actively checking. They should be listed elsewhere and not in the photograph category. If I were looking for some type of photo and 20 pages of these blueprints came up I would be pretty pissed and leave. Pushing the photo work of legitimate photographers back in the search for something like a blueprint where no work was done to physically make the work sucks.

Remember street corner newspaper racks, where you were supposed to leave the money in a box and take a paper? I think that was the last time an "honor system" actually worked.

Bumping this because almost 2 weeks have gone by.

The keyword spam on the abstract paintings is still there.

JC Findley

Roger that, I will reforward up the chain.

Refresh my memory on what they were?

David Smith

Search golf still life. The paintings start near the bottom of the first page. It's not just those though. All of this artists images have keyword spam in one form or another.

Edward Fielding

Failing to see the golf connection there.

Mike Savad

yeah there are quite a few spammy things in there. football, golf, sexy, ... he lists everything but the proper words. none of his things are right. just lots of sport and pop related words.

there's another spammer at the end of the search on page 3. sad thing is, he's only selling originals.

interesting i have some " golf still life " images that should be there and 1 of my images i corrected the keyword issues my fault thanks, also noticed the 22 images you are talking about but the fact is out of 3 pages you have none david you are worried about keyword searches for images you do not have ?.

I'm not going to be a happy camper if all those blueprints have to be categorized as drawings... that just shifts the avalanche from burying the photographers to burying those of us who draw in pencil / colored pencil, etc.

Assuming good faith on the part of the people posting all those patent drawings... I don't know whether it would be difficult or not to start a new FAA category for blueprints / technical drawings, but if it would be easy to do...

Thomas Zimmerman

You called them drawings yourself though, they are more of a drawing than they are a photograph.........

Roger Swezey

JC,

When I read what you wrote 5 hours ago:

"Roger that, I will reforward up the chain.

Refresh my memory on what they were?"

I got myself immediately into the "Response" mode..

Then it dawn on me, that every time "Roger" is typed, it doesn't always have to pertain to me.

Carry On.

David Smith

Tom

I came across it a year ago while doing research on how the search functions. I brought it up in this thread in response to someone telling me to message tech support. It hasn't been corrected in a year.

The golf still life image I have in mind to shoot has been put lower on the priority list, but I'll get to it eventually.

David Smith

Cheryl

While a new category would be best, they are still not photographs and if the closest of the existing categories is drawings then so be it, although, considering how they're made, digital art would be a good fit as well. Of course the digital artists will then complain.

Not to add more to David's thread (my apologies, David), but going along with the name thing, on one of the ships I served aboard there was a young fellow whose last name was Sergeant.....and he was a Seaman (Seaman Sergeant). We always told him it was a good thing he wasn't in the Army and eventually promoted to the rank of Sergeant. :)

There is a football player named Captain Munnerlyn that played college ball at South Carolina and later played for the Panthers in the NFL. I imagine at some point they just had to make him a team captain so it would be less confusing.

David Smith

Bumping because the "golf still life" spammed keyword images are still there.
