Sigma 17-70 Contemporary (newest Version), Any One Using This Lens? What Do You Think?

Thinking about a replacement for the Nikon kit 18-55. The new Sigma 17-70 C and their 17-50 2.8 sound interesting any users? Let me know what you think.

While I'm not familiar with those exact Sigma lenses, I am a fan of Sgma. My favorite lens of all time (and I have had a few over the years) is a Sigma 10-20mm. I've had it for 10 years and it it still my best and most used lens. I do a lot of outdoor and scenery photography and this is a wonderful lens for landscapes. When I purchased it the price was more than I had paid for my new Nikon D50 - and it has proved to have been well worth the cost.

I had one for my Cannon and I won't sugar coat this -- it was not worth sh*t in my opinion. Focus was slow and nowhere near precise. Images were often fuzzy. If anything was usable, I usually had to downsize and sharpen to make it passable. I eventually quit using it altogether and went back to my kit lens.

Others may have different opinions, but my Sigma 17 to 70 turned me off of all off brands lenses. I consider it one if my worst photography mistakes

Edited to clarify I had an older version of the lens

Here's a sample done with my Sigma 10-20 mm zoom on my Nikon D3200. Very little post and full image, no crop. Take a look at the full 6000x4000 image - I have full res enabled.

I have their old Sigma 17-70 and it is NOT a good lens. Like Joseph, the images were soft and mostly unusable. The lens is in a drawer somewhere now and I won't even use it for backup. Maybe Sigma's new version of the 17-70 is way better, I don't know. I do have a couple other Sigma lenses that I love, so not all their lenses are crap.

kathleen, their on the third version of this lens, and I've heard the same about the older ones. But the reviews sound really good on this new one, hopefully there right just ordered it. Guess I'll let everyone know. Nice pic Bill, I have a Tokina 12-28 f4 that I love for my wide angle shoots.

I've had that 17-70 for years, I used it with my crop sensor Nikon before buying my first full frame.
It was my favorite lens. I dont shoot with the crop sensor often anymore, but when I do, I use the 17-70.

I use the Sigma 17-70 and I'm pleased with it. I have a new version

Thanks everyone! Hey Jessica, I guess when you say the "new version" you mean the contemporary version the one with the letter C on it? If so what camera are you using it on?
