Kista, Sweden????

Yep! If I had a dollar for each time Kista, Sweden has seen my pictures, I'd be a pretty rich guy! Who Are Those Guys in Kista? Should I be flattered?

and several others not mentioned here are search bots. We NEED them

If you know what a bot is, do not read further, this is how I describe a bot

Why do we need bots…. and why should you allow them some access to your site

A search engine is a site that allows people to put in a search term and find a site for what they are looking for.

A bot, or web crawler, is the little programme (think of a little robot made up of 0s and 1s) who runs around around the web with a thousand mates, checking out all the sites by following links. One link leads to another 5 links and those 5 links lead to another 10 links etc etc. The bots all scurry around and report back to the big programme, the search engine, what they find on the pages the links lead to.

The search engine waits, all knowing and, when someone then comes along and asks for FISH, the search engine smiles to itself and, patting a bot on the head that brought back the FISH descriptions, tells the person all the sites that are talking about fish.

That’s a bot.

Some places, like Beverly Hills and New York, are main servers for many services; phones, search engines and main routers, so many people show as coming from these addresses

Thank you Abbie for attempting to explain a "bot" and that there is really no way to distinguish between the two by looking at stats. I realized this when my unique visit count kept climbing even though the main views were coming from Bev and NY but there were being seen as unique hits on my AW. Unique hits are not bots and are real people coming through main server hubs in those locations. Don't disregard them all as bots, most are not.

Really, this thread has gone this long and nobody has looked up the IP address? If I get a chance tomorrow I will look it up.

Beverly Hills is not a bot. It is a server location for a number of large services. In particular there is a server for Verizon wireless there, among others. Learn to look them up. It's not that hard. Go to any image page and look up recent visitors. Hover the pointer over the location and you will see some numbers. That is the IP adddress. Write it down and put it in a Google search.

Ok I looked up a recent visit from Kista. After seeing a visit from Kista in my views I went to the image page. Under statistics I clicked on " View Recent". I hovered the pointer over Kista Sweden and the numbers 212.247.181.198 appeared. I put that in a Google search. I got the owner of that IP address which is"Tele2 Swipnet" I did a search on that. It turns out that it is a large European internet service provider.

Keep in mind if the visitor is not logged in to FAA then the location is going to be the location of the internet provider's server, not the users location. For many networks, especially wireless, the server is not near the user. That server is probably serving millions of users. In addition that server may have bots for whatever reason.

According to Bradford most of these hits ar not bot-visits but visits by people that are not logged in to the FAA or Pixels site.

Did I understood you right, Bradford?

Abbie Shores

They are. There are thousands of visitors whose locations show as these places purely because they use routers that go through these cities

Meike Hofstetter

Kista Sweden seems to be sleepy on Sundays. Not one single visitor / bot from there today Lol!

Bradford Martin

Well the bots certainly don't log in. I would say more visits are from internet bots of some kind than actual visitors. I have read that social media will cache a copy of your web site on their servers when you post a link ( for efficiency, it's a good thing). I am talking about Twitter and Pinterst in particular. So when you post there you may get some bots grabbing up copies for their servers. And then there are apps and companies that follow social media so you have their bots. But then there will be actual visits, but they will not be logged in so all you see is the server location for the social media company. There are companies that least large internet servers to other companies that need them. I would be willing to bet there are a lot of big servers located or listed as being located in Beverly Hills. Some other obvious network server locations are KIsta and High Wycomb (London) and Guangzhou (Canton).
Some companies will route their web traffic through their own servers, especially when connecting overseas. Visits from a server in New York could actually be a person visiting from Europe on the company computer. The server you see listed is called a proxy server as it is not the original server to connect to the internet.

Again you can learn more about your visitor by looking at the IP address number and searching that. I will do a thread on it to show how it is done.

lol.

I'm wondering if there are any bot spotting threads. Maybe it would be interesting to collect everyone's observations and compare tags, art type, etc? Or is that a strange idea?

I've seen a couple of new ones, one is from Parma, Italy and the other popular one is from Roubaix, France. Checking the IP address for the one from Parma, it appears that this bot is a cousin of the Roubaix bot.

Most Kista hits I find are on the IP 212.247.18.198

Bradford, that is very similar to the IP you wrote down, wrong by 1 digit, are you sure you wrote it correctly?

As for what Kista and the IP 212.247.18.198 is:

That is a BOT from the company called Pricepi https://www.facebook.com/pricepi. They scan the web looking for products and then put them into their database. That is what the bot is doing, scanning your images and main page for info (price etc etc)

You can see that its Pricepi by checking the IP here: https://www.projecthoneypot.org/ip_212.247.18.198

You can see that the browser User Agent has the info about the company in it, logged from other people for that IP.

I've looked that this before, but currently their website is offline https://www.pricepi.com/, its basically a site for search for products and finding the cheapest place to buy them. That is why its constantly found on FAA, since FAA has alot of products.

A large majority of visits to any website nowadays are bots. Some good, some bad.... its just how the internet is.

Rob.
