I'm Not Tree Expert...

...but every now and then I come across a tree I like the look of, so I photograph it. The problem is identifying it afterwards. This could be the most common type of tree going but I haven't got a clue what it is, so if anyone can put a name to it that would be appreciated.

Hi Dave, it could be a beech tree, the trunk and branches look right. Was the ground below covered with brown leaves? And are those leaves still attached to the branches on the right of the shot? If so then my guess is a beech tree.

Jan - this was taken late April this year. The ground was indeed covered in brown leaves and those on the right are still attached to the branches. I'm useless when it comes to identifying flora and fauna, I just know what I like when I see it :)

Cynthia - thanks for your kind comment!

Dave,

If you are not a tree expert? What are you doing in the woods?

No need to answer that.....good luck shooting whatever you shoot.

lol

Dave, it is a great image.

I'm not an expert by any means but when I was a teenager my younger sister did a school project on wild flowers and trees. She had to pick the flowers or leaves and stick them into her work, something we're not allowed to do now. But that project stayed with me and I still love to ID wild and garden plants.

Lovely photo.

Beech leaves turn a light tan color and do cling to the limbs in winter. The trunk will be a light gray in color and smooth in sections. Here is Googles images for them. https://www.google.com/search?q=beech+tree+in+winter&biw=1215&bih=665&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=xfibVbqiD4XAtQWYrJP4DA&sqi=2&ved=0CB0QsAQ#imgrc=_

Thanks everyone. The consensus seems to be Beech and when looking at other web images I'd have to agree. I can now keyword it properly. Much appreciated!

It's worth getting yourself a small tree identification book that has colour images in it
Great image
