Old European Artists' Sketchbook Found In Storage Unit

We found an artists sketchbook in a storage unit and we’re are trying to determine who the artist is that drew these sketches, here are some attributes we deciphered;

* Seems to have been sketched between 1910 & 1920 (from date of retail photo art store in which the book was sold from, car style, clothes style & baby carriage style)
* Artist liked to take pics of old building and baths
* He liked to put people in his sketches
* All sketches are from France, Brittany and England (mostly from England)

There were 3 old painted napkins inside the book

Below is a link for the pictures of the sketchbook as well as pics of the 3 napkins;

Can't help you with the artist but what a treat to see all the sketches! The architectural drawings were particularly delightful. You'll need to talk to some art appraisers to possibly id this person.

edit: of course someone here may pop in and say ''that looks like so and so''!

very cool.
number 23 looks like a family crest - that might tell you something?

Thanks for your input, each comment give us more things to think about and possibly closer to the artist, who knows perhaps it just a good unknown artist, we get stuff like this all the time, I will be posting more at later times. I'm going to look more into #23

Very cool! No idea who the artist is but I found an old painting many years ago and sold it in auction for $220,000. I feel that going to an auction house to have it appraised or asking a museum for an appriser are good ways to go.

Interesting, I'd guess he/she had a trained eye.

This is wonderful. I can recognize some of the places on these drawings and many of them I think are from Somerset, UK, where I live. There is one from Glastonbury Tor and several from Wells Cathedral or Bath Abbey.

I thought I had found the artist, pic #71 looks very much like a painting Cecil Aldin painted of abbey bath with strollers parked on right, but he mainly paints dogs and animals and there was not too many of them in the book

This is just a guess...

Based on some of the figurative sketches it might be Hilda Van Stockum. http://www.hildavanstockum.com/index.asp

She was a Dutch born artist and moved to England. Known mostly for her illustrated books. The styles of the clothing match the illustrations in the book Kersti and Saint Nicholas, printed in 1940.

Her grandson might be the person to contact. Dr. Chris Oakley.

Hope that's helpful.

Cheers, Barbara

Thanks Barbara,
I looked into Hilda's works and books, some similar stuff, but I think this artist was born before Hilda, perhaps mid 1800's, she was born in 1908, but I'm going to do a bit more research on her

Hi, Ray,

Look at the way Hilda paint/draws feet...clogs....Dutch.... compare to Pg 55.

I own a few of her books, first print runs... similar style to her father or uncle...If I remember right she was influenced by a family member.

My mother knew her as a little girl...and they kept in touch for years, until my mother moved to Canada in late '50's

Good luck with your hunt, please keep us posted.

Cheers, Barbara

oh lovely, so many sketches of wells and the cathedral and vicar's close! in some sketches the women's clothing could also be from the 1930s. the red and blue selective coloring is quite distinctive. good luck!
