The Brilliance Of Tote Bags

I recently ordered my first tote bag (18x18) of one of my own pieces out of sheer curiosity. Upon receiving it, I was extremely happy with the quality and overall appearance. I intended to give it away as a gift, but I decided to use it myself to see how well it holds up. I live in an urban area where 95% of my travel is on foot. Not only has the bag held up well so far, but something unexpected happened-- it has turned into an incredible vehicle for marketing! I've received many compliments-- and even more glares-- on the tote bag which have lead to conversations about the artwork on the bag. And if you're carrying around a business card, that's the ideal time to give it away.

Just some food for thought for everyone. Since we don't walk around carrying framed prints, duvet covers, and throw pillows, do yourself the favor and order a tote bag or two (or five!) and display your artwork whenever you go shopping! =)

I have been doing just that.....I order a few different ones and I use them at the grocery store as we have a plastic ban here.

I also use mine when I go to the laundry mat to dry clothes, the larger ones work perfect for me to put my folded dry clothes in...and they are light weight and easier to carry then the laundry baskets...plus i dont like outting clean clothes in a dirty laundry basket.lol

I am also going to order one for my daughter to use for school to hold her binders...I will also be replacing my backback for work with one....

They have been one of my best advertising tool!!

Just ordered one myself!

I intend to carry my laptop in it--
(-Yes I still use a lap top--'cause I like BIG screens!)

Can hardly wait to get it!

Cheers!

Excellent! The only thing holding me back is trying to decide on which to order.

If I was to get one for myself (and I probably won't because I don't do totes :-) ), I would put a message on it that says, "Get your own Tote! At www.wingsdomain.com" -W

I like the idea of adding an AW url to the tote.

I agree with you, Rahdne - I'm loving using mine!

Since I use cloth bags for grocery shopping, when I saw that FAA has totes my first thought was "What a great advertising opportunity!" Now I just need to save up to buy a couple.

Great idea. Can anyone answer a question: I can't tell from the description (for example 18x18) if they have significant third dimension, or if they are relatively flat.

So happy to see this thread, Rahdne! Good to hear the positive re totes for a change. I think you just may have succeeded in moving me to purchase a few of my own, as I was hesitant upon reading other remarks in other threads re the subject. You bring up a great point, and one of my initial thoughts, that the bags might well prove to be a great promotional tool of our work, not to mention an everyday convenience. Thanks for posting.

They are relatively flat - maybe 3 inches wide at the bottom with no cardboard stiff thing at the bottom to hold it out. They are more for carrying papers and notebooks than groceries. That being said I can't wait to get mine with my advertising on it. Just a tasteful url and maybe a QR code.

I use my 18x18 for groceries all the time and they actually hold a lot of groceries...next time I go to the store and one is filled with groceries I will take a photo of it..and then a photo of all that was in the bag...

I guess we should just all order one and start carrying stuff around.

Rahdne, your post reminded me, I was going to order one for myself. I bought 4 for my grandkids a few weeks ago. I had them shipped to me first so I could check them out. I liked them so much it was hard to send them on to the grandkids. I just now placed an order for mine. Looking forward to getting it!

Is the artwork on both sides like it is on the pillows?

Do they stand up by themselves?

Artwork is on both sides..they do not stand up by themselves when empty..

Just putting together an order for myself and my daughters. I'll get to see my work as photography, watercolor and digital images printed. I've been cropping some work so I can have it printed square with a boarder. It looks better than having some of it cut off in the bleed printing areas.

As far as advertising we could always add a text line to the image with our info.

I still can't get images to post in discussions...! Dang. Anyway.. I use mine too. This one has become my logo image. I just received my banner yesterday and it is gorgeous... as well as business cards... I think it is great advertisement.

I do wish they had a pocket for cell phone and keys on the inside.

I'm planning to add my website URL on a print for my tote. I just can't decide which pic to use!
I need a big one to carry mounted prints to my Artist in Residence programs.

I'm glad that this post (and my experience) might influence some of you to give the tote bags a try. The print quality really is great and getting our work in front of people's eyes couldn't be easier. My 2nd tote bag order is due to be delivered today, in fact. I'm looking forward to receiving it. =)

I ordered 2, one for me and one for my mother, should be here any day now, can't wait!

How long did it take from ordering to receiving? I want to order some and I'll need them by the 10th. Did I wait too long? I just can't DECIDE which image I want - or what size.
I'm afraid 18x18 will be to huge - I wish I could get a 16x18.

Thanks for your post, Rahdne. I've been thinking about this and hope to order soon. I hadn't thought of adding a text with my web site URL, but that's a great idea. I've been getting positive responses of my FB social page, and intend to promote the printed products on my professional FB page more frequently. As a painter, it can be difficult to gain acceptance for paintings available even as prints (one gallery I exhibit in won't allow prints being available), let alone for throw pillows, tote bags, etc. Therefore, I promote printed products as more exclusive than usual mass-produced items in stores. If people are buying art museum and botanic garden products featuring artworks by dead artists, why shouldn't they also support living artists' beautiful products? The tote-bag offers a great opportunity to advertise our art!

I did see one artist's post on a tote s/he had ordered with the website address prominently placed across the top. My first thought was that if I saw that, not knowing anything about the person carrying it, I would not be at all interested in the product no matter how nice the image was. I would assume that the product came with the address on it, so I would probably not even ask.

I am thinking you would get much more interest by doing as Rahdne said and just ordering one (some) with a showy piece on it and then having business cards of some sort handy. I would certainly drop more than a few cards into mine before I went out LOL

I want to do this too but I read somewhere on one of the threads here that the straps are not long enough to put over the shoulder across the body. I had mentioned they may want to look at that as a lot of people like to be hands free when shopping. If they do, I will definitely order some. Great way to market your work!

Debbie Oppermann

I just received my 2 totes and they are terrific - love them - kind of a canvasy look and feel
No the straps are not for crossbody but perfect for shoulder carrying
I will be definitely be ordering more

It was me Nikolyn. I plan to use it to carry prints in when I do my Artist in Residence. I'll be doing a night sky presentation, so I imagine those who see me carrying it will know everything about me to understand.

Photography Prints

I dont know how to make the tote show up here, but this is the file.

I am really happy with mine that I ordered for my mother's 80th birthday! I also was impressed with the quality and printing!

The tote will be perfect for that use, Melany. I was thinking more of carrying them about town and to market and, hopefully, having people notice and ask. And I was asking as much to get the experiences of those who had tried it one way or the other.
I must say I am just like the customers others have complained of. I simply cannot make up my mind on my own :)

When the bags I ordered arrive I plan to use peel and stick velcro and a piece of fabric to create a pocket to carry business cards in.

Glares because he's a guy carrying a tote bag, lol.

I bought two. One for me and one for my daughter. I use mine for a beach tote and to carry art supplies when I do artsy stuff outside the home. 18 x 18 is a perfect size for that.

My daughter has a 16 x 16. It's more of a purse size.

I wish it had a magnetic closure, but that would make it more expensive.
No it does not stand on its own unless you have something firm inside it.

I love mine, but was surprised that the photograph images look more like paintings. The images on the sake page made me think they would be printed on a smooth surface rather than on canvas.

I don't get those who want to use it for groceries. At 20 bucks a bag, thats an expensive grocery sack.

I look at it as a wearable business card :-)
