Can Anyone Id This Bird?

I just saw this land in our back yard. Searched the internet and the ID seems to be elusive with only one out of 10 images saying it was a Northern Flicker.

I can when I get home. Looks like a type of woodpecker. What region was it taken in?

Sharon that's close, but the red spot was on the back of the neck, not the cheeks. Possibly a distinction between male and female. First time I've seen one here in Southeast PA.

The boys have that red cheek patch, as in Kathleen B.

They are pretty shy in these parts, so appreciate the nice images!

The ones around here are pretty flighty so usually you just see them when they take off but this male was interested in something in the dead grass on the edge of a pond (in the Owens Valley) and was willing to stick around long enough for me to focus on him. They are among my favorites.

If I ever get a photograph of a Northern Flicker, I will have photographed the majority of the woodpecker species.,

Like the brown thrasher. Its a beautiful golden brown but hard to get a decent picture. Its about the size of a grackle but more shy. Grackles will walk up to your feet, squak and hang out like he wants his pic taken lol

There were 2 that landed on the ground and were hunting for insects. They are kind of big and they are stunning to see in person with the bright red and white flashes of color. :) I feel lucky to have seen them so close to my window. (about 15 feet away). Thanks everyone, this resolved the question and I'm closing the thread.
