my favourite word today.... I am exasperated.
When a child, my Grandfather who brought me up, used to play a game with me. I had to pick a word from the dictionary or encyclopaedia and incorporate it into a sentence that day.
I still love words and still have a word each day I learn about
What is your favourite word for today?

Your grandfather sounds like a really cool guy!
My word of the day is "immolate".
It is 9:35 AM on the west coast and already brutally hot. The swamp cooler is running full blast, the ceiling fans are running and there is a big floor fan blowing straight at me. Still too hot to breathe. I need to go outside and water the potted plants but I'm afraid that if I stand in the sun I will immolate myself.

Cavil
I became very exasperated when he chose to cavil every activity I proposed for the day's event.

I'll go with "frustrated", not because it's a new word for me nor because I'm particularly frustrated with anything today, but because our almost four year old granddaughter has learned it (from Daniel Tiger) and it's so cute when she uses it. The other day, when we were trying to get ready to go out, she was dilly-dallying shilly-shallying as the old song goes and I got a little cross.
"Are you angry, Grandma?" she asked.
"Yes, I guess I am a little angry. But mostly I'm frustrated."
"When you're frustrated, stop and ask for help," she replied sweetly and matter-of-factly.

I had to do this in elementary school....first activity from grades 3-6th. we picked our own choice of word from a book, looked it up and had to use it 3 times during that day.
My word for today is inexorably.
I used it while writing an e mail...had forgotten what it meant and had to look it up...for the second time in my life!!
That's been happening a lot....I instinctively have been using words that I know longer recall what they mean....sigh

My word today is "renewal".
Yes, I'm glad that yesterday is gone and that there is a new beginning for each day. Cobwebs wiped away... an opportunity for a new focus, or a re-focus!
Have a great day everybody!

I've been having to do that too, Marlene. I'll begin to use a word that I've known the meaning to and then I'll feel like I have to go look it up to make sure I'm using it correctly. I don't know what my word for today would be, how about inspiration, because that's what I really need.

Great story, Nikolyn - my granddaughter loves Daniel Tiger, too. Frustrated is actually a good word for me today - the gym I use is closing and none of the available options fits the bill completely. One is good for this, one for that, and so on. I like my current gym, but only for five more days.

I'd like to sneak in two more words that have been on my mind a lot lately. I won't use them in a sentence but they are "tacit endorsement". That phrase started looping a couple weeks ago and it hasn't stopped.

Yes, for people from the USA (not wanting to be political here) EQUALITY has to be the word for the day.

Yes, Jessica, not wanting to be political here is why I didn't use "tacit endorsement" in a sentence.

I love your grandfather, Abbie! My word for the day is "quietude." I like the way it sounds, and it's quiet, calm, warm and sunny here today. I am floating on contentment.

Nice reasons, Patricia. How about other languages? I already used up my turn for today in this thread, but when I taught French, both my students and I had favorite words, often because of how they sounded to us - like funny or elegant - rather than because of what they meant.

Words in English are confusing, I can not remember each one has the 2nd, 3rd meanings... All I have learned looking for peace ... :D

'Deadline' has featured highly for me today - but as I have met them all with time to spare I am now feeling rather pleased with myself!

whimsy - playfully quaint or fanciful behavior or humor
I love the chuckle it gives me whenever I hear it or think of this word because it reminds me of the scene in an old Marx Brothers movie where Groucho is in a boat with a woman telling him he's so full of whimsy - to which he replies something about the radishes he ate earlier!
I can definitely use a chuckle today!

My word today is awareness. My word came from an Eckhart Tolle quote....
“With awareness there comes choice. And so you are able to say: "I allow this moment to be as it is". And then, suddenly, where before there was irritation, there is now a sense of aliveness and peace. And out of that comes right action.”

pernicious - NO reason for that one, ... it just rhymes with "auspicious" (^_^)
Can a person, thus, be auspiciously pernicious?
Ridiculous !

How about "postulate", philosophically speaking?
A quilt or comforter is the postulant phase of a duvet. The previous sentence is a postulate in the philosophy of bed coverings. (^_^)

A quilt comforter is happy being a comforter, lol.

Ed - good word.
Miss Marlene - I'm not used to all of this high end stuff. I'm a simple peasant. :-)

To others, it might look, "Pretty Awful!"

Exactly, Marlene. Not with artwork anyway.
Yeah, I always though of it as a fancy dust cover you throw away when it gets ratty since it was a lot cheaper than the quilt underneath, but somewhere along the line it became something more (or maybe I never learned what it was). It's also can be extra cover that doesn't get changed in hotel rooms, otherwise known as an ewwwwwwww :D
P.S. Nice one, Roger.

Vanessa,
In the last few hotels I've stayed n, instead of duvet covers for the feather duvet quilts, they simply use a flat sheet below and above....they get changed daily and are a lot easier to change out than a duvet cover that needs to fit evenly over the duvet. and NO, absolutely NO bedspreads anymore...those are the ratty thangs....just like an 18" width of fabric at the foot of the bed to make the bedding look finished....
my word for the day RATTY
Lol. Yes, it does bring up a visual that's been chewed throughly.
It's really good to know that hotels are finally getting the point that we don't like them. It must be cheaper for them when they don't purchase all the extras, too.

FLAPE (flash plus tape) is an approach to tiered storage that uses flash storage as primary storage but also writes a copy to a linear tape file system
As long as the data is being accessed frequently, it is recalled from flash. When the data is no longer being accessed frequently, it is deleted from flash storage. Because the data was also written to tape, an archival copy of the data will still exist.
FLOUD, a similar approach to tiered storage, also uses flash for primary storage but cloud storage for secondary storage. Both approaches allow storage administrators to archive data as soon as it is written instead of having to move data into an archive at some later point in time.
