I thought it looked like he was attacked by an animal. Perhaps a baby alligator.

or he pressed his face against a grill or something. we need to visit that town and sell it under the same premise... the real question is though - would would hand any kind of money, let alone go near a couple that looks like that? must be some really desperate folks.
