that doesn't help me much. the figure could be male or female. beyond that its just a face and doesn't mean anything to me.

Mike-

Maybe you can enlighten me.

All I have to go by is the caption below the painting that reads....Margaret Yeaman was injured on 15th March 1982

Jane, thanks for the link.

He is a very talented painter, understanding the abstraction between detail and blur. Eye sight in other words.

His work is embracing for viewers.

Danl,

Do you see a statement in his work? How would you phrase any statements? Perhaps I should say from the body of his work?

Dani, I was not familiar with Colin's work until you brought it to us. Thank you. This man is a brilliant painter. Just ignore the other bull... Anyone over the age of fifty should be aware of "the Troubles" as it is euphemistically called, or they are just trying to be obtuse.

Thanks for the links. I think his work is fantastic and brilliant. I was not familiar with it before either.

His style of using wide brush strokes accents the troubled lives of his subjects....hard and deliberate

Interesting I was studying Francis Bacon yesterday. He obscures many of his faces and self portraits.

Like seeing your reflection in a shop window, obscured you have a worry or two.

Colin's work hugs a certain normalcy in portraiture, but I see how you mention his use of wide brushstrokes.
Technique. Pure and simple.

Kevin easy does it, some folks have a little comment for everything they see in here. He had no clue what he
was looking at. Does not stop him.

People wanting respect for their causes might also want to respect what other cultures have endured for freedom.

My great grand aunts and great grandmother were all caught up in the Easter Rebellion. We paid a price, but
Ireland has paid a price for centuries. Kevin my grandmother was in boarding school across from the Hotel Kitty
Kiernan living in at the time in Sligo, Ireland. Grandma was a child at the time, but they lived side by side.

Francis Bacon - Irish Artist

Mike the subject was Jewish and very famous. If you need to know more I suggest you start to study.

He is very good, but I don't care for the subject. Call me superficial if you want but there's enough pain in reality, I don't want it in my art.

Well, I'm 51 but was not aware that the conflicts in Ireland were referred to as 'The Troubles' and I'm not feeling particularly obtuse for not knowing.

Leaving that aside, that is a powerful collection. I looked and read each person's story and appreciate the link being shared here. It is certainly an accurate reflection of how violence, war, terrorism, and death leave a mark forever on the survivors and families.

Danl,

Colin's paintings are magnificent, and made even more so when I saw how big they are. I love his technique. You simply can't get anywhere near that with photographs.

I'm starting to understand that half of U2s lyrics fly past most listener's ears without any thought.

"You simply can't get anywhere near that with photographs."

Yeah right. Every medium has the ability to tell the story in its own way.

Dan Turner

I can't tell if you're agreeing or disagreeing, Ed. The photo you posted is flat, lifeless, emotionless and has less going for it than a low budget B movie publicity still.

Colin's paintings, on the other hand -- awesome!!

Com'on Dan that is a powerful image. Technically not the greatest photo of all time, but Colin's portraits are not Rembrandt's.

Ed,

Speaking of songs with lyrics not many people understand....

when was the last time the radio even played Blow'n in the Wind?

A real anthem forgotten.

I was kidding around tonight at Starbucks with a few coffee pourers in their late 20s about
1970s music and stars. It began with Mary Tyler Moore and Ted Baxter. No idea who they were.
The young woman was kidding the young guy that "you know Mary"....she began to sing a made up
Mary Mary song....it was funny. Then she asked if he knew Elvis' last name? I chipped in "Garcia".
They laughed. I mentioned Cheech and Chong? He knew who they were.

So all that is left now of the 1970s are Cheech and Chong movies. Amazing how things do and dont stick.

This is Colin's painting of James Ellis. Oil on linen, nearly four feet wide. It is, by anyone's yardstick, Art with a capital A.

One of Rembrandt's finest works.........this is not meant to diminish Colin at all, no one else is Rembrandt. If you had a close up you would see
every little hair in the fur overcoat. The point is setting aside technical matters Ed's photo is important.

Dan

The horizonal lines in the background and the blur in the right ear (almost a photographic shot of movement) helps to make this piece more than than just a portrait. There is no stagnation in this image.

David Bridburg

Danl,

Agreed the portrait has the quality of motion, not stagnation. Still that presents a technical problem not all that well solved.

I have a great respect for Colin's work. His emotional statements through the faces of his subject matter with his technique
make his style more than very viable.
