I ordered a 40 inch metal for a gallery show and it was truly an overwhelming hit with the other artists and customers alike. Well, not overwhelming in that it hasn't sold yet but it got a LOT of attention and comments. The only one that was common that I didn't like was akin to the nice camera comment and it was, It looks so good because he had it printed on metal.
Anyway, the quality is certainly there and the people at the show absolutely love the metal prints and I guess it is still relatively uncommon to see them done like that, at least here.

Beautiful. The rigging reflections on the water are really interesting.
Clearly, you must have a nice camera. (Sorry I just had to.) ;)

I agree, the metals are so beautiful and striking. I have gone to all metals now. People love them and always comment on them. It used to be a fairly exclusive print, but now even Walgreens is making them. Not sure of the quality, but just saying they certainly caught on. Compared to a canvas, .. no comparison.

I think that different images, some at least, will lend themselves to one print medium or another. Just as some images look better at a certain size or sizes. Metal was clearly a good choice for this one.

Beautiful work, JC! I can see how that would pop on metal.
@Sharon: yes, other places try this too. I have had some dreadfully printed flimsy bent cr_p through a groupon from p r i n t e r p i x, for example that took months to "resolve".
FAA metal prints are in a totally different league :-)

Sadly, i agree. A lot of places offering print services on this or that media, are producing cr@p.

Yupp, various images lend themselves to different formats and sizes. The ship is small compared to the overall image size here and needs to be big. I have a tighter crop on the ship for smaller images.

JC,
Nice image. Have you had this image printed on paper? And if so, how does the metal compare, as far as the contrast? In my experience, the "flatter" the image, the better it looks on metal and vice versa.
"Hey man, great shot Dude! So like what kinda camera you got?"
It's what I hear all the time.............

truly stunning image, one that would look great on many surfaces but I can see how it would really stand out on metal too. I think it does depend on the images and subject matter as to what looks best.

My eyes say the reflections were added? Were they correct?
edit: ahh, never mind. I now see the light!

This is the first metal I have got and have to say it is my new favorite for images that work well that way. ( And placement that works well as it is very reflective. )
I LOVE the acrylic but they are heavy. This gives the same presentation imo but at much lower weight.

They are not Chuck. Those are from the high power dock lights shining through the rigging.
I suck at adding stuff like that anyway.
Yep, I know you don't add things; that's what threw me. But the bigger image revealed more.
Nice work, as always. I really need an excuse to order metal.

Stunning image JC! I'm a believer you have to show/educate them how beautiful art is, large format is great for that, how else are they going to know?!! The metal was a great choice for your image. The metal would add shimmer to the water, very nice.

Yum, that's a good image! Sunrise exposures are totally your deal, JC.

Wonderful image!
You must really have a great camera, and must be really lucky, and just happened to be at the right place at the right time, and good thing it is printed on metal so it makes the image look good, and man I wish I had the same lens you have so I could do that also, and anyone can be a photographer because it is so easy... !!!
j/k - ha - really nice image JC - proves them all wrong...
Yes that's a great image. It even looks 'metallic'. HDR is very powerful when it isn't abused.

Perfect choice for metal and I can well imagine that it's a knock-out at that size. Well done, JC

Looking at your image again as nice as it is, I realize you are giving realistic color that makes a very nice image, bumping up the red in the sky would help it to sell quicker. People tend to notice and gravitate to color even if it is more that what was there. It's a shame you had to rehang it or take it home with an image that nice.

For shipping expense the metal, and even the acrylic compared with conventional framing, seem to be the better, or even best, choice.

Beautiful image JC! I also sold a couple metal prints and am really curious how they look. I guess I will have to buy one for myself.

Thank yall...
On red. I suck at adding color.
Kip, spot on. The difference in shipping a 48 inch metal and a 48 inch framed print to here is ~$300 HUGE difference.
I didn't have to take it down, the downstairs show goes for five weeks and it is in the most visible spot in the gallery. If it doesn't sell then it will go back on my wall and rotate through with the other large images I have as center pieces.

I'm going to have to check out the local hospitals! I have seen cool art on the walls but I don't know if it is permanent.

Great image JC, do you use HDR software or do you combine them all in a stack by hand? I have used Photomatix but it often results in a grainy image.
I use Photomatix. Many of the presets will produce grain but many will not and then they vary from rather natural to of course that "HDR" look that so many associate with HDR.

I did one of this image:
I hung it in my shop on Pickering wharf in Salem MA, and the comments kept coming. I did find a slight crimp or bend in the metal which was pointed out to me. So I talked to FAA and after I sent them pictures which with they could see the bend in the metal so they sent me a new one. and I went over this one with a fine tooth comb.
I think the depth of the color is stunning. The blues are deep and there is a glow to the sun in the clouds that is best said as luminescent. But I have to admit I still have this image today. I take it to a show now and then and every body loves it.
Note I had it as a 16 by 20 and had priced it at around $195. Maybe I had priced it too much but I was running a brick & mortar so the cost needed to be higher... Thoughts?
Edit> Awesome shot JC. Mine is a 3 shot bracket/HDR in EFX Pro. I like natural HDR images. While the wild ones are interesting there are so many doing them wrong that I can spot the telltale glow or outline around objects a mile away. when done right there is no glow which yours is a good expample of what to do...

Actually seems about right on the price for me.
Personally, I never expect to sell large wall art at live venues. I do mind you but I make most of my money selling the small 5x7s matted and bagged. People don't always have the space or often the budget for large art but they can always find a spot somewhere for something small and $25 seems like much more of a deal when they fell in love with a $455 large hanger. It is really win win as they get something they love and the profit and the small items more than pays for both them and the large art that drew them to it in the first place.
Oh, to add to that I only do large art that has both a good chance to sell AND that I would like hanging in my house which is just fine if that is where it ends up.
And JC, that is what happens to mine. We're doing a renovation on the downstairs so my office is a bit tight on space with framed and matted prints stacked here and there. I try to only print those that my wife approves of that she would like to have in the house... :-)
But I will note that I sold at least a dozen 11x14s of this ship image (matted/bagged) and around 140 post cards... I almost tore one up in front of a woman who had the audacity to say to her friend in front of me... "Oh I'll take this home and scan it big and make a print at CVS" Instead of yanking out of her hands and ripping it up, (I exhibited great restraint) I told her "oh you should have told me that before you bought it, I print this on slightly textures card stock and it will show massive texture in a blown up image... I'm so sorry..." Evil grin!
I would have said something like "Oh, I'm glad to hear that, because we all know how CVS needs the money so much more than a small business like me."

I did an art league show a year or so back - my two metal prints were a hit, if not a show stopper - but not even the hint of a bite. Some of it is in the area I live - mostly very realistic art or those things you buy in furniture stores that come from China - even in the big fancy homes. These:

JC - do you have an actual photo of the metal print so we can see it, or any of the others? I have an art festival on Cape Cod coming up and I was playing with the thought of ordering a few and present at the show. Thanks for sharing this! My best, Juergen

Cool image JC!
I was trying to get various specs from FAA's print fulfillment at pictureframes.com but it doesn't appear that they even do the aluminum prints or acrylic prints. Do you know who is actually fulfilling the metal and acrylic prints here?
The pricing seems decent here, but I wanted to get more details about the actual production. I figured since the picture frames.com info seems to be common knowledge, maybe it was the same with the metal and acrylic fulfillment.
Great shot too. Congrats! :)

I love metal...wish they could do one with a matte finish, the gloss works well in so many situations, but there are some where matte would be better!

It's a great image, looks great, and got lots of attention, but I don't consider it a hit till it sells. I sold a big metal print earlier this year, wish I could see if. I know it's here on Madison somewhere.
@Skip, I used to have that information, but it's been a couple of years since I've ordered any and I don't have it any more.
Anyone who has ordered them recently should be able to get it simply by looking at the return address label on the package. The ones I ordered two years ago came from California, not North Carolina.
