Perfect Effects 9.5 Free?

Have any of you gotten an email from On1, offering Perfect Effects 9.5 free for a limited time? There is a download button embedded in the email but I can't figure out if this is supposed to be a trial version or not. It does say "limited time" but not sure if that refers to the offer or the software. Does anyone know? I don't want to go out to their site and wade through all the hype.

I got version 8.5 free in a similar promotion. Yes, it is true!

Just been to their web site and it looks like it is just a free trial unless I missed something

@Roy -- You missed something. ;-)

@Kathleen -- Yes, it's free -- but it's version 9. OnOne seems to offer a free version whenever they issue a big, new update. Offered FREE for the past few months is version 9.0, while the most recent release is version 9.5 (which is NOT free).

EDIT TO ADD -- I just went through the download steps, and though the page says Version 9, the file that downloads is Version 9.5. So, looks like your email was right, Kathleen; Version 9.5 FREE for a limited time! :-)

('d like to give it a spin, but the system requirements are out of range for my 32bit, 4 GB ram, Photoshop CS3 system. Scroll to the bottom of the linked page to check the full system requirements.

Thanks for the link, Wendy. I have ver. 8 but hardly ever use it. I might as well try a newer version.

Well, their email was misleading. There were 2 download links embedded in the email. The prominent one led to Version 9. Above it, there was another link stating that Version 9.5 was available free and there was a link to download Version 9.5, so I clicked on that. The download was labelled 9.5 but after it finished downloading and I ran the install, it installed Version 9 instead. Either they don't have their act together over there and the link was accidentally pointed to 9, or it is a blatant untruth. I may waste more time contacting On1 to explain the meaning of Truth in Advertising or just cut my losses. Ether way, it didn't cost me anything but time and so far, it doesn't appear that junk add-ons were installed with the package. Time will tell.

You got your time and moneys worth.

I use Dynamic Contrast and HDR a lot. I've upgraded in the past but have resisted future upgrades. I started with 8 I believe.

They have a rather progressive upgrade schedule. The idea I suppose is to get you hooked and then get you to pay for upgrades in the future. Anyone without the name Adobe has to be rather aggressive to again a foothold in this market. It kind of strange, makes you feel like you can just wait long enough and the today's newest version will be given away for free. Perhaps they will have a subscription model in the future like Adobe.

I hope that the contenders will not go to subscriptions like Adobe. I was able to get the CS6 Design and Web Premium just before they went Cloud, for $180 through a non-profit site. That cost included DVD and license. The site for non-profits recently began offering the Cloud package for $240 the first year then $360 annually thereafter. And it's a different collection than the Design and Web Premium. Adobe wants $600 so the $360 sounds like a bargain but I'm not biting.

I'm still crankin' along with CS 5.5 and it's fine for what I do. I do not want to go to PS in the cloud.
