Would You Travel To One Of 50 Theaters To See A 70mm Film?

This sounds really interesting, and I would make the trip. Epic Wester, great cast, and shot in 70 mm to give the audience as close as possible to a unique experience. I love it.

If it was playing somewhere I wanted to visit anyway, maybe, but I'm not going to travel just for a movie, any movie.

Meanwhile some of the local theaters here in the edges of civilization are running Kickstarter campaigns so they can upgrade to digital and survive.

Edward I had no idea. Seriously. I wonder why. I guess like everything else in life, there are many factors.

Like the local Drive-in. They had to raise $70,000 to make the switch to digital. That's a lot of popcorn.

...
What's weird about this movie is I thought it was mostly shot inside a snowed in cabin?

In NH Edward? It boggles my mind why some places like NH would have trouble affording digital equipment when theaters in a place like Upper MI, where the population is about 1/4 that of NH, have had digital for a while now.

EDIT: Oop, just saw your update. Yea, a drive in. no one goes to them anymore, it's more for nostalgia. Not much money in running a drive-in.

The drive-in theatre here does bang up business on Saturday night, the line to get in is often over a block long both directions and blocking traffic on the main thoroughfare it sits on. It even has six screens (always has) and packs each lot near full.

It's been a problem for a lot of theaters in the Adirondacks as well. When you are highly dependent on summer visitors like theaters there are, it gets all the harder to update using only traditional profits.

Edward - "Like the local Drive-in. They had to raise $70,000 to make the switch to digital. That's a lot of popcorn. " No drive ins left around here - but as for "a lot of popcorn" - I haven't been to the 'movies' in years - until the dear spouse wanted to see San Andreas - popcorn for her and two mid sized drinks was more than the cost to see the movie.

IMAX has been around for years. We go all the time. The shoot on 70 MM. The format that is really great is Omnimax, where the screen is domed shaped. Now that is really cool but for some reason not near as popular as IMAX for some reason.

Roy, there is little profit if any in movie admission. The popcorn is the big profit center for the theaters, especially if they are privately owned. Popcorn and fountain drinks are the main profit centers for theaters. Not admissions.

NO - you can hardly get me to travel 7 miles.

Yes, I would. For a movie I really wanted to see (not this one, probably) no distance would be too great. I LOVE movies, and think they're the most satisfying of all forms of social (group) entertainment. For me, money would set the only limitation on how far I'd go to enjoy a good movie - 70mm or no 70mm.

I once rented a car and drove nearly 300 miles to meet a friend so we could see Lethal Weapon 2, together. Then drove back home and was at work before 8 the next morning.

Totally worth it! :-)

Ahhhh Wendy, I remember the days when I was young and would/could do all nighters like that. Now I pull a calf muscle giving my toddlers a bath. What does that have to do with the OP??? I have no idea.
