Google Wants To Store All Your Photos For Free, Forever

"Dan Tynan

At today’s Google I/O developers conference, the search giant unveiled Google Photos, a new app that will help you store an unlimited number of photos, find the ones you want, and share them free of charge.

Google Photos will let you view, search, and share them in a variety of ingenious ways."

" unlimited amount of storage for images up to 16 mp ". Cool.

"The app will be available for download later on today from the Google play & apple iTunes stores "

So this is only for iphones not desk or laptop ?

Sure sounds like it's for iPhones only, Janie, but I'm sure that will expand ??

Here is my thread, by the way, about the Flickr alternative ... and why I suspect Google is doing all of this

I've been keeping up with that thread.

I would bet that Google wants all your images so they can use image search to make money. First the regular search results got filled up with ads, the Froogle went from a free product search to charging by the click.

Image search is big on Google and has yet to be monetized. Google is also an investor in Zazzle. With all the images they could attract and a financial interest in Zazzle could they be prepping to find some way to create a back end to hook all those images into Zazzle (or maybe some other site) and 6-12 months down the road send out an email to all participants that says hey, want to make money selling all those images you uploaded, click here to opt in to our licensing and merchandising programs.

Rev share would probably be 70-30 in favor of the images owners, stock sites take a direct hit, pods take a direct hit and Google fills its image search with images you can buy through Google since Google would now get a cut.

Interesting observation, Adam, I did not know that. Add to this how Flickr is gaining search for images ( owned by Yahoo ) like YouTube has for video ( owned my Google ). ... plus Yahoo is now the default search engine on Firefox browser.

I was working at Pratt and Whitney as a LAN admin in 1998. I was assigned to figure out
how the email usage effected memory usage across servers.

The first thing I noticed was how few people at that time were power users. Remember
my engineers, global sales people, and top management all had huge responsibilities.

About that time Google offered 2 GB of free email space on their servers.

I would guess they too realized that most folks would not use it. Since they were offering
it to some, it looked good to offer it to everyone.

Flickr/Yahoo and Google know not everyone is going to load up their systems with a whole TB of
info/graphics.

Mike,

I would not call it sharing. I would call it broadcasting. Google image broadcasts our images.

People who want a framed image on their walls can only get that from a fulfillment center you work with. No one
else.

A power user on FAA might have 1000 images up and 15 MB per image.

This is 15 GB of data.

The average FAA member is nowhere near using 15 GB.

I don't see it as looking a gift horse in the mouth. I see it as business.

They are giving you something that you want - what do they want in return ?

Everything costs time & money , corporations are not in business to waste either.
