Website Logo

I'm having a devil of a time with the logo on the HEADER of my website. It always looks so tiny. I managed to upload a new header background after a lot of reformatting but I'm wondering if there are some guidelines somewhere for all this. I've attached a screenshot. The area in question is the Laura Macky Photography text on the left. I'd like to make it bigger but no matter how large i make the file in photoshop it's still tiny. I've tried it as a png and a jpeg and also I tried saving it for web. It all comes out small. I'd really appreciate the help.

Laura - the maximum width of the field the logo is in is 210px. If you make a logo wider than that, it will shrink proportionately so that it's only 210 pixels wide. You're best bet if you can't fit your logo in 210px is to go vertical with it like I did here: http://tisdaleart.com

I used a transparent PNG because the logo is not in a fixed position on the background. As you change pages on the site, the header elements move a bit depending on the layout below it.

Ahh 210px no wonder. I also used a transparent png just a sec ago so I didn't have to have a background. is it 210x210 square? I like your logo. Very cute!!! And thank you for this. :)

Laura - the height is up to you - it doesn't have to be square. Mine is 210x95 - I didn't want a super tall header. And thank you! :-)

I guess what I was wondering ... what is the maximum height. is there any documentation on FAA about the sizes of things? I never saw anything about the header anywhere and I kept reformatting until I miraculously figured out the width. It took me an hour lol.

I figured out the width by looking at the CSS for the field when the new AW's started rolling out late last year. I don't recall seeing a maximum height on it but it's been a good while since I poked around in the CSS.

For me, I learn by experimenting more so than documentation, but I'm not aware of any documentation. If you want to experiment with heights you could just make a solid color box and upload various heights to see what works for you and then do the actual logo once you've settled on a size.

Again, that works for me because that's probably the way I'd do it even if I had documentation. ;-)

Maybe I'll put this off for awhile and just leave regular text. Honestly, I think I'm fairly proficient in photoshop but when I uploaded my 210 px wide and 95 high image, it messed up the header background lol. I've never seen anything like this. usually it's so simple in other websites. They give you the parameters and as long as it's that wide and tall it plops right in there. Oh well...maybe SOME day.... Thanks anyway!

Well, this one is a bit more customizable than the ones that give you strict sizes for every element. I'm personally glad for that, but for the folks who want click and go, it would be nice if there was an instruction manual with recommended sizes for every element. :-)

Well I think we're talking about the same thing. I really love customizable things but even when I resize it by cropping 210x95 PX, it STILL will not fit in that area on my header. I'm really not sure why. So that's why I'm saying it would be nice if they had some guidelines because it's not working for me.

Laura - when I look at your AW, your current logo is 210x54 - it fits but it is very small -

Would fit the space better and allow you to use a larger font in your logo.

The header background however, does not fill the space on my screen. I've used a small repeating pattern rather than try to fit an image across the whole background. The new design is made to fit screens from phones all the way to people like me on large monitors. If you use an image, it needs to be able to fill the space no matter what. Colors and patterns are easier to work with in this case although I have seen a few people who used actual photos that really worked well. They tended to have a lot of solid colors though that blended into a background color well.

I've been trying to get something to work. That was kind of a placeholder. As for the repeating pattern, this is what I mean by there should be guidelines for posting all this. :( I spent a lot of time on that silly header just guessing at the dimensions (that took an hour). Oh well. I'm done with it today. I've never seen something so difficult.
