Product Ideas

I just got a wild idea to see what kind of new products, if we had a choice, would you want to add to our shopping list.
To make it simple Lets put down just 2 ideas from each person.

Myself I would say Pillow shams, and Artist Aprons.

1. Notebooks (the paper ones)
2. Laptop skins.

Puzzles.

Journals -- hard cover, spiral bound.

James Brunker

I'd go with puzzles and calendars. I've licensed images to companies who publish both quite a few times, would be great to have an easy option to sell them directly as well

Jessica Jenney

I like puzzles. Maybe the buyer can select puzzles with more pieces or less. Less for kids and more for advanced
Tapestries wood be good also.

Edward Fielding

Hawaiian Shirts, bow ties and socks.

....

I like the apron idea. Dish towels too.

The puzzles would have to be high quality; not the flimsy, ragged-edged, Dollar Store type.

Clare Bevan

Have to agree with puzzles, aprons and dish towels .

Kris Parins

Tiles: framed, cork backed, or plain
Canvas bags

Hmmm, let's see, I'll bet we get tshirts, tote bags, and shower curtains...just a hunch! -W

Debbie Oppermann

Tote bags, towels (dish, hand, bath, face cloths)

The ability to add a matching gift card to an order...Either one with the FAA logo on it or better still a match to the image being sold. So nice to be able to ship a gift with a small card ...and yes..I have suggested this before in the weekly suggestion thread.

Matthias Hauser

Puzzles, Calendars, T-Shirts, Cases for Tablets.

Robert Kernodle

I think we did something like this a couple months ago.

But just for fun again, I will add:

* those giant fingers you see at ball games

* spinner hubcaps (a METAL print, of course)

Rudi Prott

Mark Papke

1. really nice quality canvas bags in many colors...not as heavy as the LL Bean bags, but good sturdy, folding bags for farmer's market shopping, etc.
2. Shower curtains....I have been dreaming of these for a long time! Not many sites have them, even the most popular.
3. I don't think we should get into t-shirts, UNLESS we can offer several TYPES...for men and women and kids - heavy fabric ones, the body con ones, and the really soft fabric ones. Round and V-neck. Also, the printing would have to be done with high quality rubber ink, not the cheap silk screening where the design flakes off in 3 washings.
4. puzzles would be good for many people's work on here...paintings and photographs.
5. large magnets in various shapes/sizes.
6. water slide decals for guitars and other things...would love to have these.

Torn between offering product ideas, and requesting that FAA cut back, I will post separate sets of ideas.

The site needs to survive, but professional artists appreciate FAA's serious online presence, where they can sell prints easily, and connect easily with clients. If FAA adds too much merchandise, collectors equate the site with Cafepress or Zazzle. There is a place for merchandising... is it here?

To increase capabilities for fine artists and illustrators:

- Limited edition prints with automated stops, and printed edition info [1/10] beside signature.
- Supplement the licensing with staff who negotiate the deals and deliver files-- since files are already stored and contracts provided. (Thank you for adding licensing.)
The site could grow quickly if surface pattern design and other licensed art had reliable, honest representation.
- Durable lightweight wall hanging materials for restaurants, weddings, offices, interior design showrooms, or temporary situations. Sewn over archival dowel, with hanging hardware; printed on waterproof substance with grommets at top.

Increasing merchandising:

- Pillow shams and other pillow types, as these are often sold as art/craft pieces.
- The ability to apply tiled repeats on certain products (as fabric sites do)

What-the-heck merchandising:

- Allover printing for clothing
- Window decals

How about:
Wall hangings,
Hall mats,
Mouse Mats,
Dinnerware,
Hoodies,
Socks,
Neckties,
Watch/clock faces,
Watch straps,
Toilet paper,
Playing Cards,
Assorted Hats,
Cigarette packet holders,
Lighters,
Snuff boxes,
Wall Mirrors,
Flags,
Dog coats,
Magnetic decals in various shapes and sizes,
those all over car body decals,
Notebooks,
Laptop/tablet decals & covers,
Flowerpots,
Trinket boxes,
Oven wear,
Wooden panels,
Underwear

:D

Edit: oops, my bad I got carried away and didn't see I was only meant to put down 2 ideas. Ho hum...

John Wills

How about a digital/electric picture frame where it changes the image every 30 seconds.. ;)

Richard Reeve

@John, yeah with each 30 second image separated by30 seconds of a huge © sign :D

Susan Maxwell Schmidt

Pillow shams, both printed and custom solid colors.
Fabric by the yard... and nice fabric too, not just cotton. Silk, linen, even hand-washable rayon. Washed silk scarves (big, long ones) would also be awesome, as would printed leather bags and perhaps even leather jackets with artwork on the back (for both men and women).

Please keep the cheesy 5 & Dime stuff off FAA. If you must go the way of every other low rent "everyone's an artist" site, please keep it to Pixels (e.g., mugs, t-shirts, etc.). What makes FAA stand apart and above is its decided lack of kitsch. Personally, I'd like to see it move even further along in that direction.

All over print t-shirts and purses!

Valenteana J Chilsted

Wow. lots of ideas, really like the shower curtain and spare tire cover ideas.
Of course these are just ideas you all know, don't know if they are looking to add anymore merchandise to the shopping list.
After all it is an on line art store not a Wal-mart.. But this is fun just seeing what people are interested in.

Thanks everyone.

Sarah Kersey

I'm not so sure about all these products for FAA. Maybe there should be another site called FineArtAmericaGifts.com or FineArtAmericaMerchandise.com

Something about having pages and pages of original art available priced in the tens of thousands of dollars and prints available of works by high-end artists and photographers, and then also having coffee mugs, dish towels, t-shirts, etc., etc. available just doesn't feel right to me. JMO

Edward Fielding

Ahhh but where is that line and has it already been crossed? The product line extension will happen so there is no use fighting it. The good news is perhaps it will lead to more sales opportunities and repeat business. Unfortunately it will probably attract a lower end crowd. But then again maybe today's laptop skin buyer is tomorrow's framed art buyer. Getting people to realize they can buy unique art directly from individual artists instead of mass produced stuff is always good.

I see the shower curtain is nearly here with the bag and t-shirt.

http://pixels.com/products/nighthawks-edward-hopper-shower-curtain.html

I agree that the line was crossed quite a while ago. I would have loved to see the Fine Art part of FAA remain separate from the Arty Merchandise part. But, along game Pixels.com and the phone case.

No way that genie's going back in the bottle.

Tile would be very nice especially if it can become a large mosaic or floor design. A tougher, "fired" tile is ideal but more costly.

Stained glass might be nice too.
Something consumable maybe, candy, cookies, cupcakes, etc.

NAVIN JOSHI

DIY , Templates should be available with each product.

The LICENSING.PIXELS to play a great role so the LICENSING CODED products should be able to get in groups so we can have separate GROUPS for downloadable products.

Have a Great day everyone!! (*_*)

Melany Sarafis

I just got a sleeve for my 13" laptop. I'd LOVE to be able to put my images on them. Mine has stars on it, and I have lots of night sky shots that would look nice.

Robert Kernodle

Hey, why impose any product limitations at all?

Just have templates of anything imaginable, and direct buyers to click on a text link that leads to the design page for whatever.

- condoms
- dinner napkins
- bar napkins
- beer koozies
- contact lens cases
- facial tissue
- toilet tissue

... ad infinitum

Seriously, though, I tend to think "limit" instead of "expand". As someone else mentioned, keep it more fine art, instead of "print on anything".

Natalie Holland

-Scarves
-Denim Handbags
-Sweatshirts

Ericamaxine Price

I didn't go through the whole list of ideas but in case it hasn't been mentioned....

pillow shams to match bed spreads/quilts
sheets and pillow cases

Love the shower curtains by the way... great idea!

Mike Savad 1 Month Ago:

I love PUZZLES and wish to see them in FAA offer! Also wall coverings are great idea :) I would add towels (small dish and/ or large bath, or beach towel maybe).

Valenteana J Chilsted

Wow, I just thought of a great idea for an item..The windshield shades for the automobile, that would be so awesome.

Valenteana J Chilsted

Pixels.com could have a field day with this discussion,,but I am sure if we look through the archives there were plenty of these ideas mentioned, I guess the products can only be met depending on the capabilities of the company.. But at least they know what the people are looking for..

James Smullins

I found a local niche putting photos on different sized dinner plates. Would probably sell on FAA as well. And would save me the hassle of having to find time to make them not to mention the time spent going from thrift store to thrift store searching for just the right plates which is not as easy as one would think.

Denise Clark

Hi,

Personally, I like the cards, maybe the cushion, tote bag and phone case......but I am not putting up my images for any of the other products. I think it cheapens work a bit...what I would really like is coffee table books of either one persons work or to be able to compile all your favourite images into one with artists receiving a royalty if their work is selected. I am not much into interior design and sticking things on walls to be honest....don't even have any family shots on view...but I do love books....

Cheers,
Denise.

I'd like to see a range of ceramic items such as mugs, plates, jugs, coasters. They'd have to be good quality though, not that horrible melamine stuff.

Susan Maxwell Schmidt

Denise, I think your idea is nothing short of brilliant. Enabling us to create a customized book of our art and sell it on FAA is a fabulous idea!

Meike Hofstetter

Umbrellas would be great too.

Edward Fielding

Advertising novelty suppliers have whole catalogs of fantastic cheap giveaway products that can be customized.

- pens
- luggage tags
- coasters
- eye glass repair kits
- plastic bags
- rain ponchos
- ball caps
- thumb drives
- thimbles
- magnetic car signs
- trash cans
- sticky notes

The possibilities are endless!

Meike Hofstetter

Mouse pads.

Valenteana J Chilsted

Trash Cans? That is a new one, had not thought of that, but yet I could see where they may sale,

Monsieur Danl

i-pad covers
refrigerator magnets

Jennifer White

I think FAA should keep to more home interior stuff since interior designers shop here for art (though I do like the tote bags). I do understand however that it's harder to sale Wallart and easier to sell products.

I'll suggest Decorative Plates, and maybe Light Switch plates.

Jessica Jenney

I'm looking forward to puzzles! Wall tapestries? And actual sweatshirts without hoods! I don't understand why here they are called sweatshirts.

Floyd Snyder

Tapestries

Puzzles

I would go for any of these other idea but the only one I seen that has any potential of significant markup and goes well with "Fine Art Prints" is the tapestry idea. I used to sell tapestry and you can make a very nice profit on them.

All the rest of those ideas I don't see big profit in them. Puzzles are one I think will sell great, but they weigh a lot and the shipping is very high, especially overseas shipping.

Floyd Snyder

"I'm not so sure about all these products for FAA. Maybe there should be another site called FineArtAmericaGifts.com or FineArtAmericaMerchandise.com"

I thought that is what Pixels.com and FineArtAmerica.com is supposed to do for you. And of course on your AW there is only the products that you want to sell also.

Joy McKenzie

Jessica, the actual name of the garment is "hooded sweatshirt"....hoodie is slang and has worked its way into fashion lingo. But yes, regular sweatshirts would be nice :)

Artzmakerz

I would like to ask about digital downloads, I didn't see this as an option yet in this thread, unless I missed it. I think it would be appropriate for the Pixels site, however. I have more to say on the subject, so should I start a new thread asking about this feature? Or is it appropriate to ask about it here? Thanks!

I just noticed Baby Onsies are for sale.

I'd still like tiles.

I am removing everything but prints and cards. Its just too much for me! Maybe when I master the editing programs where I can individually make an image that fit each item. But, to me personally I feel like I am simply distracting a potential print sale.

Mike Savad

for everything we sell, we should be able to adjust each of the prices. that's where the percentage thing comes in handy.

as for things fitting - just let them fit where they do. i don't do anything special for these.

Denise Clark

It is very simple to present your image in the best possible light with the new FAA Programme. I quite enjoy doing it and actually learn a little more about design. For example I usually reduce the image size for my greeting cards and then choose the colour border...it is amazing what a difference it makes and also (dreaming a bit here) gives the customer a chance to see how the image would look with the mat board colour. With the tote bag etc. quite often I will enlarge the image so only part of it is used but makes a more dynamic design in those particular instances. Have a try See My Photos...you just use the slide...even I find it easy and I am not very tech minded.

Cheers,.

How about nice throw blankets?

Lamp Shades could be really nice.

Tablecloths, napkins & runners.

I love the coffee table book, great idea, and also the tapestries.

Skyler Tipton

I love the new home decor ideas!

Wall clocks, lampshades, throw pillows, fleece throw blankets
Some kitchen decor could be towels, wash cloths, mugs, sugar bowls, jugs, and decorative plates
The bath of course, shower curtains, which we already have, add some bathmats to go along with the shower curtains. Add some more bath towels as well as soapdish containers and toothbrush holders
For the bedroom, we have duvet covers, pillow covers, as well as rugs and curtains for the windows. Curtains for all rooms are good
Also, for the office, some stationary items, such as mousepads, binders, notebooks, clipboards, pocket journals, business cards maybe

And for misc puzzles would be awesome :)
