Animals Are Artist Too

Paw-blo Picasso

Elephants with paint brushes on their tails, monkeys, apes and now dogs. I am sure there has been other members of the animal kingdom that have "created" and sold paintings.

A whole lot of people out there, including many artist, that can not tell the difference between a Jackson Pollock piece or one of the others that have made millions putting paint on canvas through any number of unconventional ways, and one of these animal paintings.

The question is, why do wonder and even get upset over the fact that a lot of people don't want anything at all to do with the art world and they are perfectly happy buying their wall hangings from discount stores and even garage sales.

For the same reason they are happy buying a $15 pair of sneakers or listening to a $150 surround sound system. They don't understand the difference between that and good quality, nor do they care.

But we as artists have many of the same things in our lives, what we don't care about others have great passion for. It's a horse apiece.

Awww... that's sweet. The article doesn't show the actual paintings, just the photos of the dogs shaking it all off, which are pretty cool. (I hope they were washed first.) It was done as a fundraiser and to bring awareness. Whatever gets people to think about shelter dogs is good.

I was flipping through this old book from 1957 that summarized the years news (a great dump find) and they had an article about a chip who painted modern art masterpieces. Its like the oldest joke about the art world.

Meet Congo:

"the remarkable picture-making abilities of a chimpanzee called Congo. His paintings were not random splashes, but visually controlled abstract compositions, and Roland arranged an exhibition of them at the ICA in London. "

James D. Orang got world famous for his abstracts at the Topeka Zoo where I was employed as a primate keeper.

We submitted some of his work in a state wide scholastic art contest and Jimmy won first place. The news broke by the press that an orangutan beat out al the kids
In the state of Kansas and soon Jimmy's work got printed whilst originals were hung in the White House.

Jimmy got bored with it an retired from painting.
