Color Mode

So why is it that if I upload an image in cmyk, it goes all wonky and if I convert to rgb it is fine? Is FAA really printing images using rgb or is this only because the default setting on cameras is rgb and this allows people who don't understand color settings to upload without converting the images? If that is the case, is it not possible to upload in cmyk so that it maintains the original look when FAA converts it back to cmyk to print.

partly because we are viewing images in sRGB and partly because we print in aRGB. best to keep it all in RGB because most screens default to that and it's printed that way.

Nancy,

sRGB color mode is web color mode.

For best image preview on web site you must use sRGB color profile or Adobe RGB color mode .
Please note for Adobe RGB color profile some web sites have Imagemagick script where automatically convert Adobe RGB color mode to sRGB color mode for better image preview on web site ( FAA is one of these sites ), but some web sites don't run Imagemagick script .

For any case try always to upload images to web sites in sRGB color mode.

Later POD services print file in sRGB, Adobe or CMYK color mode, they convert color modes if is necessary for printing.

So for you is the best to always upload files on web sites with embedded sRGB color profile, only on that way you will be sure that your images won't have color cast on web or over saturated colors.

Best

Faa is an art marketing site. It needs RGB to display our work. FAA does not convert to CMYK. They send our files off to a printing company. Printers accept RGB. But maybe the software in them converts to CMYK, I don't know. At any rate you have to upload RGB files here.

I guess it is all of my freelance (and boutique firm) marketing, but I thought cmyk was the preferred color space for printing. I use it for my vector art out of habit because that is what my printers want. In fact they require me to convert photos to cmyk.

Hi, Nancy,

Because of this thread I just noticed that FAA's acceptable color mode is not listed anywhere on the 'Upload New Image' page. There's a lot of useful info on that page, including visual examples, but no mention of the color mode.

It would be useful to have it there, especially for newcomers to the site. I'm going to add that to the Weekly Suggestions thread, while I'm thinking about it.

Is there any difference between RGB 1999 and 1998? My editing program is 1998!

The print is done in Adobe RGB

Please only upload RGB or sRGB as we do not cater for ProPhoto, CMYK or ay profile apart from the RGBs
