Don't Take A Picture On The Plane Until You Read This Story

"Next time you’re tempted to take a snapshot of an interesting cloud formation or your seatmate sprawling into your personal space on a plane, remember Arash Shirazi and Steven Leslie.

Both of them are law-abiding citizens and air travelers. And both recently ran afoul of the airline industry’s confusing photography rules.

With only days before the busy summer travel season unleashes millions of shutterbugs on America’s airports, it’s helpful to know about the airline industry’s little problem with cameras so that your own camera doesn’t become hung up on it."

i can see why they wouldn't want the bad press the next day when they down a flight because they don't want a family aboard for some reason (that was the latest one where a autistic person and their family was removed from the plane for some reason). but to shoot a cloud? that seems odd. considering if you know about it, and you still want to record, you can get google glass and i doubt they will be paying that closely to see that your doing anything but staring.

It's a shame it has come to how it is these days. I remember when you would check in at the ticket counter, get a seat assigned, if you didn't already have one, then board the plane, and off you went to your destination. I also remember passengers happily snapping shots of pretty much whatever was in the viewfinder while on the plane, and even in the terminals.

Frank, I wanted to add, that the photo of the person in the header of the linked article reminds me of George Carlin. Maybe it's the hairline, beard, and black tee shirt. Weird, huh.

Greg -- now that you mention it, yes it does look likek Carlin. Hmm???

Yes, I found this article interesting as it is not only happening with airlines ... in my town you can't anymore walk on railroad property with a camera without the RR police questioning if you're a 'terrorist'.

The case of the ill boy reminds me of a quote in a mafia movie: ... kill all witnesses !

There are too many companies which do not believe that people remember such things when they buy/travel next. I DEFINITELY do ! No AA next time.

This time last year I was traveling through Barcelona,Spain and was bored waiting in the airport terminal for my flight. So I set up my tripod and got some lovely photos of the Barcelona airport terminal. When I went to board my plane to go home, I was taken to a side room and questioned and my carry on baggage was thoughourly searched again. Then they asked me to show them photos on my camera and the first photo to pop up was the most recent of the airport terminal. They wanted to know why I took that photo and I told them I was a photographer. I gave them my business card. They said anyone can have a business card printed up. I told them to look my name up on the internet and they found my FAA website right away along with my photo. I believe it was my FAA website that got me on that airplane. Thanks for saving my a$$ Fine Art America! (of course anyone can set up a FAA website and claim they are a photographer, but I have images that were uploaded in 2007.........who would spend 7 years making a fake website?)

I have a few shots posted here of airport ceilings that I've taken while being greatly delayed in the airport, and just looking for something to do. I keep wondering if someone is going to come over and ask me what I'm doing, but so far they have ignored me. Of course, I'm usually sitting in the food court, so they don't pay any attention.

I 'll keep doing it. However I usually just take photos from the plane while flying. However my daughter likes to have a record of the planes we have flown on, so I have to take photos of those as well. Here's one I took that sold as a phone case - I had people waiting for me to leave, but I wanted the photo. Now I just need more people from Southwest to buy this photo.

I believe some airliners have hosted contests recently where they invite you to take photos onboard. Like Amtrak hosting a photo contest and then arresting a photographer taking photos for the contest.
