Mad Men

I'll be sad when this series comes to an end. I've enjoyed following the lives of the cast through the decades.

If you're a fan, and I bet a lot of you are - you know each show ends with a song popular during that time period.

I thought it would be fun to guess the last song in the final episode.

My first thought was 'MacArthur Park' but I'm going with Simon and Garfunkel's 'At the Zoo'.

Anyone else care to guess?

I was born in 1963 (the actual day that they created SCDP in the show) and spent 15 years as a graphic designer and art director in advertising, so I have been obsessed with this show since it began. I am in a GREAT Facebook group called MADdicts where we analyze and overanalyze every single nuance of every episode (you should join us!). This topic has come up several times, but it's the one topic I seem to have no opinion on. lol I love music, and I admire the amazing way the Matt Weiner and his genius writers have used music throughout the series, but I have always focused more on the visuals of the show. SO sad it's ending, but can't wait to see Sunday's episode. I only wish it was two hours!

Valerie - one of my favorite shows when I was a kid was 'Bewitched'. I didn't want to be Samantha though, I wanted to be Darren - or perhaps more accurately, I wanted Darien's job at the advertising agency, Larry Tate and all.

When I got just a wee bit older I wanted to be one of the artists who 'drew' the fashion illustrations in the newspaper.

I've always loved every aspect of advertising and enjoy watching most commercials better than most shows.

Wasn't that a Buddy Holly song? Wish I'd known about the MADdicts when I started watching the show, because I surely would have joined. Maybe it's not too late! Being that I was 12 when the series begins (1962), I remember that era like it was yesterday. I've noticed only a few slip-ups, but mostly everything is spot on.

Oops, sorry. I re-read the OP and realized you meant the final song for the final episode. Let me think on that!

I too am a Mad Men addict. I don't know the song, I would have to replay the final show. However I did a piece inspired by MadMen, my apologies, I am not intending to image dump but it's only one.

Mad Men is one of those shows that's brilliant for a bit, then incredibly boring for much too long. Then brilliant! Then stupid. It's like the writers write themselves into a corner and don't have the good sense to scrap that idea.

Everyone knows the answer to every dilemma on the show is to get JOAN involved. She is the tie-breaker that allows brilliance to shine through once again. Whenever it gets tedious I fast-forward until I see Joan.

I've worked since I was 17, mostly in offices, and Joan's character seems a little extreme. I'm sure "Joans" existed, but yes, I do believe she was convenient to the show. Kind of a stereotype, I guess. The episode that aired last week had me cringing, however, because I could feel her anguish. I worked in situations like that (not quite as extreme), but I never fought back like she did. I just accepted that it was the way of the world. Going up against male authority terrified me, but that was then, lol.

I was born in 1953 and was/am also a graphic designer and creative director. Even though my career has been far removed from Mad Ave I (as did so many others) felt like we were a part of the ad game. As such I love Mad Men and the era it represented. Not that I want to return, only that one can smile and recall, just like an old photo of ourselves when we were younger and skinnier.

In the days of Better Homes and Gardens and my stint as Art Director for the Real Estate Service, we would routinely knock off in the early PM to have a cocktail party with a new signer. And I drank my lunch on Fridays (and other days) with the paper reps who would treat me. Of course this fell out of vogue by the early 80s when I moved to a magazine publisher in Kansas City.

WAIT! There is more Mad Men? I watch it on Netflex, perhaps there is more to come?

Yes, Sydne, there is more to come. I too thought that Cooper's song and dance was it (stooooopid!!!!) but am delighted to know they have SIX more chances to wrap it up with some sort of dignity.

For Mad Men, 12 episodes was considered a season. 12? In the 60s, a television season had between 20 and 26 episodes. That's a season, gents.

That a show on an obscure network with so few episodes, packed with commercials, could attract a loyal audience is a testament to it's brilliance. I never watched it on broadcast TV, only on disc and streaming; sooo much better.

I loved the costume and set design as much as the story lines. Never got old for me. Simple minds I guess.

Well Dan as you know, there is always time to screw up a good series, a bad ending. I hope it was a good finish!

FYI, for those who watch in real time: The finale is this Sunday (5/17). One more, and that's it, folks. I don't see how they can wrap it all up in just one hour, so it should be interesting.

Valerie Reeves

Yes. there is ONE more episode. This Sunday night. All previous seasons (except the one that began this April) are on Netflix. Also, starting tonight at 6pm, AMC is running a marathon of EVERY episode leading up to the finale on Sunday.

Patricia...come join the FB group anyway...we have NO intention of disbanding just because our favorite show is over!

And Karyn...about your original post...

Perhaps the final song should be David Bowie's 1970 classic, "The Man who Sold the World"

How about Oasis "Cigarettes and Alcohol."

I'm a Doors fan, so how about "The End," lol. Nah, too obvious. Thanks, Valerie, I will look for the group!

That is a GREAT one for the end of Mad Men, Richard!

James McCormack

I'm with Richard on that one - "Man who Sold the World"

I just read an interview with Matthew Weiner. Apparently, each episode is complete in itself, and he hinted that the final one shouldn't be any different. So, without knowing how the episode will play out, it's anybody's guess as to the final song. Perhaps it will be an optimistic tune, because that's how I remember the early to mid-70s.

Loved the ending to the finale!! Now I have to go back and watch seasons 1 - 5 or 6 lol. I've been watching a marathon on AMC...hope it's on Netflix!

Edit: The final song was great. I'm thinking Don(?) had a brainstorm.

I think you were right, Patricia. I'd say that was an optimistic song! Great ending.

I was watching several of the episodes leading up to the finale and I noticed that every time an ad was brought to him for approval, he'd complain about the use of the word 'love'. He said it is a meaningless word to adults and kids don't understand it. I think Don didn't believe in 'true love' or maybe just love at all.

So I find the words to the final song very appropriate...

"It's the real thing, in the back of your mind what you're hoping to find, is the real thing.
