A Marketing Tip To Get Your Work On The First Or Second Page Of Google

Happy Mothers Day!

I have a tip for everyone, since its Mothers Day

Their are a some long winded links here telling you how to market your work on the internet.

Are they right? (PROBABLY)
Do millions of others do the same exact marketing (YES)
Will it take you Hours per day (Yes)
Will it take months (YES)
Will it cut into and interfere with your art (YEP)
Will it work (?)

Let me tell you how Google Plus works for Marketing. Forget about getting the likes and the follows, those also take hours of work with no return on your investment (TIME).

What does work is this, and could land you on the first or second page of Google in 3 days to two weeks, if done right.

1st - You must start a business page - Google will send you a verification code in the mail in a few days.
2nd - Your business page must be verified and filled out completely.

Most of the hard work at this point is done, and so far you spent a couple hours.

After you enter your verification code,

3rd - Make a post from your business page with a great description. Add hashtags to some relevant words like city , state, area the pic was taken. Make sure you have your file name for your picture structured right. It must be worded exactly what the image is, not numbers. So if its a picture of the Grand Canyon at sunset, it should be something like this.
(Arizona - Grand - Canyon - Sunset)

Here is a link to look at to help with file names. https://yoast.com/image-seo/

Mainly this section (Choose the right file name)
You should look up what these symbols mean in a file, they are important. Take you about 5 minutes

Post your image and post. Check back on Google search every three days to see if its on the first or second page yet.

This is a few hours of work, and another 5 minutes after Google sends you the verification code in the mail.

Good luck.

No problem Wendy, hope it works for everyone. We all know how frustrating, and time consuming marketing our work is. The worst part about it all, is it takes away from us creating.

Can't work for everyone. Like anything, your marketing efforts have to be better, unique and different than the pack. The best plan it is the consistently build your work and your brand. Somewhere out there are people who are seeking what you do. You just have allow them to find you.

Marketing is part of the total package. The idea that someone could just create in a vacuum is fantasyland.

Kevin OConnell

I agree Edward, this is just a different way to market that is much less known, instead of the same marketing tips that are given here by everyone else all day long.
I'm not sure what you mean about anyone stopping their marketing after finding what works. Just because someone may not be marketing they way you and one million others are, doesn't mean they are not marketing.

Maybe they are marketing more efficiently because they have better things to do like create art

Sounds like great advice, I will try it. Thank you! I already have a Google+ account, but am not sure it is a "business" account. How do you know what kind of account you have and how do you set up a business account if you don't already have one?

Sarabjit Singh

Thanks Kevin for a wonderful Mother's Day gift.

Nancy Merkle

So, I figured out how to change to a business account, but I have no followers in the new business account. Is a business account better than a personal account? Why? How? It feels like I'm starting over.

Floyd Snyder

"Maybe they are marketing more efficiently because they have better things to do like create art'

Unless you are selling all the art you can create, there is no such thing as "better things to do". There is creating art and selling art. For a selling artist, they are equally important.

How long have you been doing this Kevin and what has been your results? Is it selling artwork for you?

Judy Kay

I made the mistake of building on a personal profile,,,I setup a page much later...and just never developed it. I am so frustrated that i cannot transfer the followers on the personal profile into the business page,, Everything I have established on the personal profile has nothing to do with me on a personal level.
Edit ..here is another article that shows you how to merge the two profiles https://plus.google.com/+RahulRoy/posts/3g6TCNAHviA
also http://mashable.com/2012/07/12/google-merge-accounts/

One thing you should know is that if you use sites like hootesuite to manage your social websites it will not let you import a personal account,,,only a business page, If you are selling or promoting art you should have a business page ...that said I think google+ has been lenient since there is so much confusion about it and so many people use their personal profiles,

Nancy Merkle

I just checked out Judy's links for merging the two profiles, but at the link for help, I get a message that says that transfer is no longer available. Boo. I did the same as Judy. I started with a personal account, unaware until today that there was a difference.

Judy Kay

Nancy if you are not too far along you can transition over,, I have over 3000 people on the persona profile and I basically rarely use it, For some reason the personal profile is much easier to develop followers than on the business one, I think it is because google+ circulates your profile around so much on the personal profile and on the business end its more up to you (?) I'm only guessing!

Nancy Merkle

Thanks, Judy. I guess I am confused about how to do the transfer. I went to the takeout page as instructed, but it discusses creating an archive. It didn't look like any of the instructions indicated it would. When I clicked on the support link https://support.google.com/plus/answer/1716102?hl=en&topic=2400106 for help, it says that transfers are no longer available. I am clearly missing something.

Judy Kay

I had the same problem, oh well, I may delete the existing one and start over fresh ,,, and see what happens, I guess it makes sense to have two business/page profiles,,one with photography and digital art and one with paintings?? or I guess you can accomplish the same goal with the circle thing. So redundant, really! things are much easier for those who just have one speciality,,, but when you deal with photographs; paintings;mixed media things get a little more "muddled" and more difficult to manage,

Nancy I found your profiles, You are not so far along that you can't switch, You could send a post inviting your followers to your profile page instead,,,and gradually narrow down the personal profile to family and friends,

Nancy Merkle

I wonder if the business page gets you in google and the personal page gets you into circles. Wish I could figure it all out. For my business page, I'm going to start following the people in my circles from my personal page and hope they follow me back. The transfer of circles would be ideal, but it doesn't look like an option anymore. My business page looks pretty pathetic without any followers. Here it is:

Geeze--I can't even get the link to work right. But it looks like you found me anyway. Thanks!

Bradford Martin

I am not sure how Kevin posted to the G+ page. I make thumbnails and upload directly to G+ ( not a business). One of the first i loaded is ranked very high in a Google search. I also posted a link to the image from FAA. There are many ways to post and I am not sure which is going to work. It looks like Nancy just posted from FAA.

I would be happy to change my page to business if it is going to be free and stay free and if it is more effective than what I already do. I will be watching this thread. Thanks Kevin.

I have always gone under the assumption that Google favors its own content. That's why I have a Youtube video with gallery and profile links. That's also why I posted to G+. But once you do it I don't know how to keep it going for a given piece of art.

Nancy Merkle

Bradford, I have the same assumption that you have concerning the idea that Google favors its own content. I have been experimenting with my new business page all afternoon. I will watch to see if it is any more effective than my personal page. I have confirmed through two different sources that personal page followers and circles can no longer be transferred to business pages. I've also learned that the G+ button on FAA and my artist websites goes to my personal page by default. Apparently the default cannot be changed. In order to post my FAA and AW pages to my business page, I have to copy the link and post it to my business page. The FAA/AW buttons don't work for a business page. Also, I've been trying to figure out why the link to my new page won't post correctly. I changed the view setting from "yourself" to "public" and copied the link. Maybe it will work that way, maybe it won't. Here's the "public" link. I hope it works.

So, I give up. Don't know if Google+ is the problem or FAA. Maybe I'll try posting to my blog. If the link works there I'll know it is FAA. Nothing is easy with G+.

Kevin OConnell

Floyd,

Yes this has worked out extremely well for me in ranking which has been bringing in sales with much less marketing. Its just another way marketing can be done. I have given the exact steps I use that has helped me. I'm happy to let others know what is working for me, to see if it may help them as well.
The nice thing about the way I am doing it is, you can try it for a few days and see. Other ways take months and months, and don't work.

For me, creating my work is more important than marketing my work by far. That is different for you, and thats cool. Not everyone is the same. Pretty much what my thread is about.

Nancy and Bradford, Yes I would think Google would favor its own content, and maybe that is why at least for now, its working well for me.

Bradford Martin

Kevin I still don't understand what it is you are posting. Are you linking to FAA like Nancy did or are you uploading a photo? I have done it many ways. One of the first images I uploaded directly to G+ from my computer also had a link to FAA. That image is usually in the top 20 on Google images for the keyword phrase that matches what it is.

Kevin OConnell

Bradford, Im not linking anything from FAA or anywhere else. Im making a post from my google plus business account and sending it to my circles and to the public. Nothing to do with FAA. You can add FAA to your post if you like, but this is all done right through my google plus business account.

Bradford Martin

How do you make a sale then if you not linking to a sale site?

Floyd Snyder

This is not making sense. You show a page that has the FAA shopping cart but saying you are not linking to FAA? That shopping cart is a link to FAA.

But what is really confusing is you only have 5 images on FAA and and only 1337 views in the 5 months you have been here. Are you suggesting that people don't need an FAA account and you sales are coming from this G+ page with the shipping cart?

I don't understand how this working?

But that's okay, I don't understand a lot of things! lol

David Bridburg

Kevin,

Thanks for the heads up on the potential involved here. I have looked at a few videos.
My website was already verified. I am set up. It took me a few minutes.

I added a lot of groups, 30.

Put out line with hook and worm and see what you catch.

David Bridburg

Floyd in my case I use http://bridburg.com

The menu just says "Open Edition Art Prints".

I tell people who go to my shopping cart that my fulfillment center is FAA with a 30 money back guarantee.

What Bradford said.

David Bridburg

Bradford and Floyd,

It is exposure only.

Floyd when you join groups on FB and then let them know you are selling art they find you
and buy eventually. Some do.

Here using Google Plus you have a bigger market to work into.

FB can get more tricky still. Consider the reputation of the head of it.

Floyd you have a neat way of getting to the right groups, but without groups there is no reach on FB.

Google is offering far more reach for free.

If people are in the market you need to expose them to your work. Google is the best place for that.

I just joined 30 groups on Google Plus. Remember by linking my business website, not the AW, I am
upping my ranking etc.......in the Google search engine.....

Sorry went to sleep.. Its for exposure and ranking on the search engines as David says. I sell from my website. My website has links to other sites I sell Limited Editions and prints from. I also sell photography tours and workshops from my website.

Instead of your website, you can add your FAA link to the Google plus post.

Floyd, in your first negative post, you write how bad you think this is, and later in another you say you don't understand it. How could you write something negative if you don't understand it. If you read my descriptions, I don't really sell any work here. Those five images were used at times to ad to a discussion or something of that nature. I like some of the discussions on this site at times, and contribute to them to help others, or because its a good topic.

Karyn Robinson

Do you have to have your own (non FAA) website to set up a business page?

Kevin OConnell

no, you sure don't Karyn, you can actually use your FAA AW website

Karyn Robinson

Thanks Kevin.

If I'm trying to sign up for the right thing, they want me to verify that I'm the owner of my website by uploading some html code to my site. I can't do that, can I?

Kevin OConnell

Karyn, I am sorry but not sure. I don't have an AW website here with FAA.
Maybe someone who knows this can chime in?

If you want, you can make a free website from Weebly or another. Then you could open a google business account. Everyone should have their own website even if you have an AW site from FAA.

Karyn Robinson

You're right, Kevin. I've been putting that off for a very long time.

Bradford Martin

What search terms are you using to determine Google ranking. And is there an image showing?

Kevin OConnell

You search the same way you always do, and your google plus post will start moving up if done right. Remember your file name, title, and description have to be relevant to each other. Your image will start popping up towards the top as well, but that takes a little longer.

Floyd Snyder

David, I have no problem in concept with what is being presented, I have a problem with getting into bed with G+ if that is what he is saying to do and I have a problem that what he posted as the link, is not working the way he says it should.

Jani Freimann

I'm confused. I have a Google + page. Are you talking about a different type of page?

This is my page: https://plus.google.com/+JaniFreimannArt/about

How do you make it a business page or create a business page if you don't have one?
I found this link, but don't know if it is correct: https://plus.google.com/app/basic/pages/create?cbp=1aotob6yaidzw&cid=5&soc-app=115&soc-platform=1

Floyd Snyder

Kevin, I am sorry that you see asking questions as a negative, but there are some inconsistencies in your posts.

I went the the link you supplied and and I seen the FAA shopping cart. Later you said you don't have any links to FAA.

Then I clicked on one of the links on the FAA shopping carts it took me to some stock photo sight. I didn't see any of your work there. But I did not search the stock photo sites because I do not like to surf around on strange sites I don't know anything about.

So if asking for clarifications on those points are negative.... then, yes I am being negative.

Plus I have to be honest with you. I have trouble taking selling advice from some one that has only five images, 21 followers and 1,345 views, most of the bots, in the 5 months you have been here. Considering those factors and your answer; "Yes this has worked out extremely well for me in ranking which has been bringing in sales with much less marketing.", I do not think it is negative or unreasonable to ask how these sales are being made or why all of the top search ranking is not adding to your views.

If that is negative... then so be it.

Floyd Snyder

Exposure means nothing if it is not resulting in views that lead to sales.

David Bridburg

Floyd,

Different folks have different art. This can be simple or complex.

Your western themes are on G+ as groups.

Google search is the prime reason to do this.

I understand how successful you are on FB, but you need to think about where
FB is going and how the head of FB operates.

Eggs in one basket.

The learning curve is somewhat steep. But once up it, the whole thing is very easy.
G+ is geared to be used. And dont let the reports on how G+ is doing sideline you.
The numbers of users are huge. Most folks have multiple accounts one with FB, one with Twitter perhaps
one with G+ etc.....

Dave

David Bridburg

Kevin,

I use the same tactic Floyd is using. As an old boss used to say, "to make an omelet you need to crack a few eggs".

We are not wall flowers.

I had a very dormant G+ personal account. I made the switch over.

But you really need more detail for others here.

Dave

David Bridburg

https://yoast.com/image-seo/

Kevin this is your link.....

This link is a blog posting. It very long winded. It is far too complex and never ending.

Suggestion for anyone taking this up, build a WP.org site, add the appropriate Yoast SEO plugin and
learn about how to use things in short concise write ups and good short videos.

If it has to go on and on forever you are wasting your time.

Dave

Jani Freimann

What is this switch over? Is it when the option to put + your name after googlplus.com? I did that a while back.

David Bridburg

Jani,

Youtube "How to make a Google + Business page". It is easy, and in fact if you have a personal page
already there is little to it.

I managed to put my bio and artists statement on mine.

https://plus.google.com/u/0/b/105757542395035770875/+BridburgArtist/posts/p/pub

Addition: I now have access to both my personal and business pages.

Are you guys talking about a G+ business page or a Google Business Page that has been around longer then G+?

David Bridburg

I am talking about a G+ business page.

Like an FB artists' page.

It is a rider page. But it is fully fledged. Unlike the FB artist's page.

It will do more for you in search.

Dave

David Bridburg

Floyd,

I did not use entertainer, I used brand as my page choice.

This site page might be clearer. It "seems" that G+ is now acting as a business page across
Google. That is very useful and free.

If ten thousand artists did this exact same thing simultaneously, then which artists would appear on the first page?

And how much good, really, is landing on the first page for a day or two, and then the next contenders replace you, and so on and so on in an endless circle of replacements?

Isn't this what hamster exercise wheels were designed for? Alas, hamster exercise wheels are not attached to power generators, and so their only value is exercising muscles of the little hamsters, and not much use for any greater purpose.
