Mother's Day Social Question

If you have friends who are unwed mothers do you wish them Happy Mother's Day? If you do are you being sarcastic, rude, snide or something else? If you don't, are you being thoughtless, careless, even judge-mental or something else?

Either way, it seems awkward. In some ways, to wish them HMD, it seems like you're making fun of them. But if you don't, and you're friends with them, or just know them through work or business, it would seem cold not too?

Or is it best to leave the wish for just purely family -- if they're in your family, that is, related to you.

EDIT: But in family maybe it's even more awkward, and the fact that you're related may make it even worse or may make no difference.

A mother is a mother. i.e. gave birth. Why would marital status have anything to do with wishing someone a happy mother's day?

Now on the other hand I wouldn't send a Father's day card to a deadbeat father who skip's town.

Yes. But if the girl's husband has skipped town it may not be happy for her at all, yet it feels equally crass not to wish her well since, as you say, she is a mother. Maybe just drop the "Happy" word and say "Mother's Day". But that sounds weird.

Would I wish an unwed mother happy mother's day? Yes, if I know her well enough to wish her happy birthday on her birthday.

Would I be sarcastic or rude? No. Of course not. What a rotten thing to do to somebody. Unwed mothers have hard enough lives without rude/sarcastic people kicking verbal dirt in their faces.

The only exception might be if I know that this particular unwed mother has a chip on her shoulder about it, in which case I might not bring up the subject unless she does.

unwed mothers? Yes, of course. What has being married got to do with anything? They are still a Mother and it is Mothers Day

Kip, I'm absolutely astonished by your question!

Being a child's mother has absolutely nothing to do with who or where the child's father might be. Heck, it doesn't even have anything to do with who gave birth to the child!

Would you wish an adoptive mother Happy Mother's Day? I'd like to think that you would, and hope you'll show this single mom the same consideration.

Honestly . . . I'm stunned!

Consider me stunned, too. Odd question and post. And, of course, not all mothers give birth to their child. Doesn't mean they don't deserve props.

Mother's Day is for mothers. Whether or not her husband/boyfriend has skipped town doesn't enter into the equation. She may not be thrilled about the abandonment situation, but I'm sure her child brings her happiness like nothing else!

Yes, of course. She is a mother doing ( at least) double duty .

I think you may be a bit confused, you may be thinking ahead to Father's day - & of those who have not supported those single mothers.

Whether a woman with a child has a husband or not, it would be a kind gesture to wish her a Happy Mother's Day. An unwed mother is no less of a mother than a wed one.

To not do so is being judgmental.

Mothers Day is for Hallmark.

Also for mothers, regardless of marital status.

Kip martial status doubtfully has anything to do with a mothers love for her child.

The question alone blows my mind.

Her relationship with her child is quite separate from her relationship with the child's father. In this case, likely much more cherished. OF COURSE you wish her a happy Mother's Day.

SHE IS A MOTHER, and always will be.

A parent who is raising a child on his/her own deserves to be acknowledged and wished well. You most likely have no idea what it is like to be the only one for achild.
My son is that person and he gets my wishes on mother's day as well...he does both jobs, and does them well.

Kip,

Parents will sigh over what their kids do for a life time, but most good parents would never trade
the job.

Are you putting your attitudes in with the idea of saying anything at all? Even a hint of some really
mislead thoughts and emotions might only need rethinking by you. But people's work, moms, needs
to be recognized in full from time to time. The job does not get paid by check.

I would think that that would be all more important that she be recognized as a mother. I even take my wife out to dinner and buy her flowers and we don't have any kids. I do that because we used to always take her mother out. Since her mom passed, we still do it to honor her memory. That and my wife has been mothering me for over 40 years.

The only time I would think it would not be proper is if she was an unfit mother... but I would be very, very careful before I made that leap. Not the kind of a mistake you want to make.

Your personal beliefs Kip are truly shocking. I think most women I know these days are very happy without men and raise their children fine without husbands and fathers. On the other hand there are fathers that are amazing, loving and are every bit the mother and father as well. I would go the distance and say "Happy Mother's day to some fathers out there.

What a strange question! I am a mother and I've never been married. I'm quite offended by the topic of this thread. What world do you live in?
