70th Anniversary Of Ve Day

Today is the 70th anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day.

What better way to celebrate & commemorate on an art site than through the medium of an art exhibition "World War II in 100 objects": https://www.google.com/culturalinstitute/exhibit/the-second-world-war-in-100-items/5QJC6kUuV0xCKw?projectId=second-world-war&position=0%3A0

Am I the only one who finds it fascinating how we commemorate "The Day of the Battle of Puebla" each year in the US and yet the end of WWII, and indeed WWI, pass us by with barely a whisper...

Thank you for posting this Richard. My father landed on Juno Beach with the Canadian Army on D-Day and fought through Normandy and into Holland. I think it's vital we recognize the valiant contribution of all our veterans.

I may be one of the few who remember it well.

My undertaker father even allowed me to run outside, get in the long black ambulance/hearse and blow the siren!

My father was disappointed at the fact they wouldn't let him in before the war ended. He did his tour in the aftermath. Took this photo while in Germany. The original photo was very small and created in a make shift dark room. Scanned and enlarged it.

I like to go to a Memorial Service on that day to keep me reminded of the sacrifice of our ancestors and family members. My church has all the services stand up and be recognized. For those like my father who has passed ( was in the Pacific Theater towards the end, dropping leaflets over small islands where there were some Japanese holdouts. His corsair was more dangerous to fly over the Pacific (no tower communication after 50 mi. out, no helicopters to pick you up IF you some how survived the propellers, no ejection seat and no landmarks, trusting only your instruments. Many pilots died when confused where they were, running out of gas and going down, never to be found except for an oil spot floating on the surface of the water.

70% of the pilots left his Corps or were killed but my father loved it (not the death of his friends and fellow pilots). I will stand in proxy for him for the Marine Corps in the service. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross. John Glenn was his wingman. He appeared briefly in the movie "The Right Stuff" in his Corsair. One year I almost wore my Patriots 18th century costume with tricorner hat, hair in a ponytail but I chickened out.

"we commemorate "The Day of the Battle of Puebla" each year in the US." We do? I didn't know the holiday existed, but then, I'm not from Puebla. If anyone who *does* celebrate the battle of Puebla cares to enlighten me, I'd be interested to hear about it. The World War II event that I'm familiar with commemorating is Pearl Harbor Day, the event that precipitated the US jumping into the WWII fray.

And my husband reads lots and lots of books on WWII, and watches lots and lots of movies about WWII... my son is equally avid. World War II is a regularly recurring topic of conversation at our family's dinner table. In a sense, we commemorate VE day several times a week in our household.

So... never fear, the Great Generation and it's achievements are not forgotten on this side of the pond.

I am always blown away by the events of WW2. Am going to the Reading air show (they re-enact battles from WW2 and much more). I just made this to commemorate WW2 veterans and the main army rifle M-1 Garand for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend. It represents warrior spirits from WW2 walking in the heavens holding their M-1's.

You did a nice job with that image.

I wonder how many dead veterans would want to spend eternity in WW II, though. Personally, given a choice between spending eternity as a soldier fighting WWII, and total oblivion, I'd choose the latter. I understand life in the trenches was pretty awful.

Cheryl, "The Day of the Battle of Puebla" is better know as Cinco de Mayo which has, in recent years, become a big thing. Whilst I am not against this celebration specifically, I was using it as an example to illustrate the defeat of the French by the Mexicans in 1862 gets more attention that the last day of the second global conflict. That was all.

Thanks for posting that link, Richard.

Here's my modern day tribute to all of the Naval and Marine aviators from all of the wars.

As a US Marine in the late 1960s, I had the honor of working with Lou Lowery the Marine photographer who accompanied the first rifle squad to make it to the top of Mount Suribachi and raise the FIRST flag on Iwo Jima. Hearing him tell the story first hand was a once in a life time experience.

Many thanks to the Greatest Generation. Semper Fi.

Thank you for the clarification. Yes, I have definitely heard of Cinco de Mayo, just hadn't heard it called the Day of the Battle of Puebla.

There was a minor Civil War battle fought in the western US somplace, and I was trying to remember where that was (who knows, maybe the town was called Puebla). Some people get very excited about commemorating every time someone sneezed in the american Civil War... I'd be willing to bet Civil War battles aren't all that big of a deal to most Europeans.

To get back on track,

Very interesting collection of objects.
Reminds me a little of going to the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC. When I visited the Holocaust museum, they had this big pile of shoes that had been collected from the people who were shipped off to the death camps...

I am typing this from a ceremony where Lt Col Cole is talking to a group of military aviators. Lt Col Cole was Jimmy Doolittle' s copilot on the B-25 raid on Japan. 99 years old and still going strong.

I was around to remember that day.... There wasn't much celebrations then.......We still had the "Japs" to finish off.

Watching RT (Russian Television) I see a completely different feeling about this day..With constant mentioning of it..

Justin, that was fantastic! Thank you for sharing the film of so many happy, and amazingly smart and healthy-looking people celebrating nearly 6 years of what must have been hell.

Kinda puts all out petty squabbles into perspective doesn't it?

Lest we forget
