Not sure if there is a better way - but if you reply to your own discussion and then tick "I want to follow this in my discussion tab" it won't disappear

I did tick that I wanted to follow my discussion but I didn't know it get's moved to the "show messages" link after it is created. I created it in the "help" section of "discussions" and then it went, poof, over to another section. lol! Thanks James!
