Is It Considered Spam If?

Hi, If you have maybe ten or so images that are similar but pretty much the same.. if you put the same keywords for each is that considered spam if they are pretty much the same thing except different versions? also what if you have an image but it is also pretty much the same as a class of images but you are not sure yourself what is going on in the image. If your keywords and description are the same for each is that spam?

I often use the same key words if the images are similar, but try to make each description different. I think it's only spam if you copy words that don't apply to the image.

I ended up with a few images that I posted the wrong size to it limited the size limit. So I posted a bigger version. I have a few the same style I liked it so made it in a different color. I took a few down since I was liimited right now.

Spam is unsolicited advertising. I don't think you CAN spam with keywords.

(No, but they do can Spam at the Hormel factory.)

I think as long as the keywords are relevant to the images I see no problem with using the same keywords for similar images.

Gawd, I hope it's not spam...don't we all do that?

If it hits the content it is no spam.

James,
You definitely can spam with keywords when You use popular ones which do NOT hit Your image.

I see what James means - adding inaccurate keywords with intent to deceive may not be unsolicited advertising, but I think the definition of spam has been extended to cover that practice as well.

I'm with Lisa. However, the keywords do have to fit the piece.

Keywords need to be accurate and relevant. Chances are in photography if you don't upload similar images then someone else will upload images similar to yours.

Just happen to be at this location now, but there are probably already 1,000 shots of the Watchman at Zion now by different folks and most are pretty similar.

Keep in mind that to some people multiple slightly different versions of the same image will turn some viewers off. The more the merrier doesn't always ring true.

That's my opinion. Your mileage may vary.

It's totally possible to spam keywords. And there are plenty on this site who do. But what Jean is describing isn't spam, because the keywords are all related to the images.

It's also possible to have images that at first glance appear to be spam but aren't. For example (and this isn't 'name and shame') Sell Art Online shows up under the keyword "Astrodome". Now, it's clearly not the Stadium, but see that bump behind the radio mast? That's also an Astrodome, it's used to make star observations to determine one's positions at night, from a time before on board computers.

Shasta also made a two wheeled tow behind trailer named the Astrodome which, like the navigational aide actually predates the stadiums name.

There is philosophical spam of keywords (when you and I see images in a search that are not representative of the word searched) and then there is what algorithms see as spam. I think the question that should be asked for someone who knows the computer programing that runs FAA should answer is: Does the system kick out images that have the same set of keywords from an artist? And if so, does a human review these or is it all automated?
Because, yes, I too have sets of keywords based on a category of work.

The FAA system doesn't kick ANYTHING out.

It is not spam if they are all applicable.

Maybe kick out was incorrect - will the FAA system bury it below the rest if the system detects overuse of a set of words?

I keep a word processed file with keyword blocks I've used. What I generally do, if I have a lot of images that take the same keywords, is write up the keyword list in my file, then just cut and paste for each image. If there is something different in one or two of them, I put that different word at the end of the string after I paste the main list of words in. For example, if you're in a national park, start with the park name, then the specific characteristics of that park like "red rocks" and all the variations thereof, then if there's something different in one photo - like an animal, add the animal name to either the front or the back of the list once you paste it in. That helps me prevent spamming, but I have found a couple where I have, for example, the word "window" in there when it's clearly a "door" in the image....I fix them when I find them. I haven't done that very often.
