Suspected Sneakiness

So I woke up this morning to not one, not two, but 7 new email subscribers. As I have only had 1 ever, the first one I saw this morning got me excited, the second seemed odd, by the third notification I had my doubts. As a bonus every one of them is from a different Yahoo email address. Anyone else have a sudden rush of subscribers to their news?

In the grand scheme of things, that's something that shouldn't bother you much if at all.

Maybe someone signed up their whole family or some social group.

Same here, Nola Lee. Three new subscribers in two hours.

Hinky-esque, indeed!

Edit to add -- Just checked my email. Make that four new subscribers. ;-)

Something must be going on, I think I got 6 new subscribers, as far as I know I only had one before.

Those appear to be spammy names, but how do you know you got subscribers in the first place? (guess if I have to ask, I don't have any!)

This has happened to me on two different occasions. The first time was several weeks ago. At the time it seemed odd that I picked up so many new subscribers on one day. The second time was today. Can't remember how many each day, but both times it struck me as unusual. It seems that reality would dictate one or two at a time trickling in over several days, not a rash of new ones all on one or two days. Just seems odd.

Hoping 'isabellefriedlimbm', coming in at #6, is the last of the day!

"friedlimb" -- love that one!

Unrelated I am sure...But I've had a rush of new "likes" on my Facebook fan page (way more than normal). Or is it unrelated?..... Did you add the new FB app to your page? Maybe people are getting to you through Facebook!

Just what vast plot do you think is coming from people joining your mailing list?

It's spammers trying to harvest email addresses. I got a bunch, too, and did some research. They use bots to sign up for newsletters on any website they can find that allows 1-step signups. The hope is that you send your newsletters out with the recipients all listed in the "to" or "cc" section. When the spammer receives their copy of the newsletter, they grab all your other subscribers' email addresses and add them to their target list.

Most email marketing campaign systems like MailChimp or AWeber (or even the FAA one) send emails in such a way that your subscribers don't see each others' addresses. So it's a really dumb tactic by spammers, but I suppose every once in a while they get a good cache of addresses.

Thanks, Daniel. I suspected something like that.

Louise asked the same question I have! "Those appear to be spammy names, but how do you know you got subscribers in the first place? (guess if I have to ask, I don't have any!)"

Thanks, Jessica...after nearly four years here, I JUST got my first one yesterday! I'd say something is fishy.
