Copy Right

Do I need to have a written copyright from the government for each piece of artwork I use on my site?

Only if you don't bother to use the search function.

For your own work? You own the copyright when you complete the work. You can register the copyright, but it is not required.

When do I no longer own the copy right, Say, if I sell the painting?

I mean use the search function for the forums and you'll find your answer. And the answers t0 98% of other questions you may have. This question was asked once already in the last 24 hours. If you'd taken the time to use the search function you'd already have your answer.

for your own work? no. you don't have to register them either. unless you plan to fight it out in court.

the only thing you do want to do is to upload sharper images, some of them have glare as well.

Lettie if you have painted something you own the copyright. Even if you sell the original the copyright is still yours unless you sell that as well.

the copyright is always yours, well after you die. even if you sell the image, the original - the copyright is yours. its not transferred to anyone. and if someone wanted to buy the rights to use it, they don't own the copyright unless you sell that to them. selling the copyright can be sold at many times more than what you would sell a regular license as. once it's their copyright, you would have to erase it from everywhere.

but you don't give the copyright away and it will always be yours. now if you did a private commission of a person, they may have a say if you can sell it some place else.

You always have the copyright unless you sign it over. I would recommend you photographing all your work and submit them to the copyright office if you live in the USA. You can do this under unpublished or published. You can register a body of work together keeping the cost down.

Some general guidelines, not legal advise.

Registering your works means you can sue for statutory damages
other wise just damages. You probably will never sue.

Iris is offering up the copyright.gov website, but I am not sure
if you can file electronically or not, your art is not digital. You need to read the materials
carefully. Or not, you might want to just familiarize yourself with what is going
on and no more than that.

You work is copyrighted till 70 years after your death. it is part of your estate.

Seek an IP attorney if you really need to know more.
