I Dip My Brain In Paint And Throw It At The Canvas.

A lot of artist get into attention grabbing gimmicks as noted by numerous threads as of late. Most of the work, if looked at aside of the gimmick involved in it's production, is fairly ordinary. The artist picks up their 15 minutes of fame and some marketing for a while. I personally feel that art is a major keystone in being human. I feel that everyone has a need to creatively express themselves and that art serves as a type of communication that is vital to our continued existence. That being said I feel these artist who feel a need to hang in the gutter are a sad lot with little understanding of art. Idealism on my part? Probably, but how do you feel about it?

Ron, there are individuals who would sell their souls for artistic fame.

I believe that most people who do NOT do art have some kind of feeling that it is either a form of alchemy (as in painting) or merely a manipulation of a machine (photography and digital). When I tell people I could teach them to paint reasonably well in a few hours, they express disbelief. I really feel they don't want the "magic" illusion popped. There are those who feel that with the right camera or good computer they could do what you do. Of course they rarely take up the challenge. When someone says to me (about a modern artist) the old saw, "my 5 year old could do that," I smile and say, I'll get a 30 foot canvas stretched ,and buy you some brushes and a few buckets of paint. Then we'll see.

On the flip side (to your point) there are so many of us in the world vying for attention, there will always be those who need to find a way to get it. The best ways to date are:

1. animals painting (hell, a monkey can do it)
2. sex (a perennial fav of mine)
3. religion (guaranteed attention getter)
4. politics ('nuff said)
5. small children painting (I told you my 5 year old could)

As long as it doesn't endanger any people or animals and isn't destructive to others' property, I think people should do their thing. Whatever that thing is.

If you could literally dip your brain in paint and throw it at a canvas your paintings would sell like hot cakes I'm sure.

I enter my studio with the lights out late at night. I trip over the gallons of
house paint. I have left them open from earlier in the day.

I then find the handles of the paint containers. I dance like a ballerina in circles
tripping and slinging the buckets with centrifugal force against walls I can not see.

The results are beyond beauty. Beyond words.

I am set to sell my condo next week when I get the living room fully painted.
