You copyrighted your photos when you pressed the shutter on your camera. You can register your photos with the copyright office at any point before OR after you upload them here. So go ahead and upload them because they're not selling if they're just sitting on your HD. This assumes that you did take the photos in question.

You're worried about advice you got on the internet about posting your photos on the internet, so now you want more advice you'll get on the internet?

www.copyright.gov provides instructions on how to register your work, as well as a lot of other good information on copyright -- in the United States. The Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page is a good place to start.

It's a lot easier to enforce your copyrights, if someone infringes, if your work is registered.

Copyright is not a choice. It is a government dictate, AUTOMATICALLY in effect at the very moment something copyrightable comes into existence.

What you do is REGISTER your CLAIM to this right, ...to create a written RECORD of your right to make the claim on a particular work. You do this through the copyright office of whatever government you are under. In the USA, that would be the US Copyright Office.

But, really, why bother? Could you afford to mount a lawsuit, if somebody encroached on your right? Could you bear such a great expense of lawyers, and court costs, and lost work time, and distraction from income-producing activities for months or even years on end? And ... the worry, and the frustration of the process, and the looming possibility that you might loose after all that?

If you are already making big bucks from your works, then maybe it could be of use, because you would not want others trying to stick their hands in that big piece of pie. If no, then .... well, ... you get my drift, ... and, as always, this is MY opinion and certainly NOT the favored one here.

I don't register my works. Or at least have not yet. But I have recouped some lost earnings when folks stole my photographs. The biggest thing is to start posting so folks can start seeing your work.

Not sure which one of us ran her off, but Gina's account has now been closed.

Note: You upload to the site. Download is when you receive something off the net.
