i can see someone nailing their arm on that thing. i doubt i would want to plug anything into that thing. viruses and such... not a good thing.

This is almost a modern-day version of Geocaching. I wouldn't trust it for the same reasons cited by Mike, and within the article, concerning viruses, etc.

Do people really not have anything better to do?

i like the part, Is that thing clean? Let me run it over the hot water LOL

If I seen that thing sticking out of the wall where someone may cut themselves on it I would think it was some sort of accident that it was there and I would find a rock or something and smash it flat.

I wonder if the property insurance covers this if anyone gets hurt or damage your computer?

i wonder how easy it would be to break your laptop with that thing. seems like a great way to lever the thing right off. its not like there's a platform. and if the artist was dumb enough to leave their name on it, you know who to sue when get hurt on it.

I'm also wondering if wet weather affects the ones that are plainly exposed to the elements?

Could you sue someone if you were daft enough to plug your laptop into it?
Probably in the US, but anywhere else they'd probably laugh at you.
Also, quite why no-one thinks of using a $2 USB extension cable is beyond me...

i would never imagine plugging my laptop into a building. let along take it out in a city, and while balancing this thing, i could be mugged pretty easily, or drop it. while a cord might be useful, who carries a cord around just because a strange usb thing happens to be sticking out of a wall. i can see copycats doing this only attaching live current to the other side.

Richard, an outstanding suggestion, but now I'm picturing a bunch of people standing around with laptops and cords plugged-in to brick walls. :)

You'd have to be out of your mind to plug your computer into that thing.

You really need to make sure there isn't anything in USB so It doesn't destroy your computer, so to speak wash with hot water and plug. wonder if you can make sure of that.

So, to my original question: is it art?
The guy who started it all off reckoned so...

Greg Jackson

I don't consider it art. As I posted previously:

"This is almost a modern-day version of Geocaching...".

Has there been any follow-up (press releases, etc), concerning it, or has the perpertrator received his 15 minutes of fame?

I haven't seen anything, but then it's quite usual for this sort of thing to just be added as a one off piece of "cultural news" ;-/

Floyd Snyder

As I said before, it is not art and if I seen it, I would take a hammer to it in the name of public safety.

What a great way to spread a computer virus.

Melissa Bittinger

No, it is not art...

I think it's a cool idea; unfortunately hackers and malicious kids will quickly find them and load them with malware. Wouldn't touch one.
