My Photo Was Taken From Faa And Used On A Instagram Event

Today I found that one of my photos from FAA was taken by someone (artist) and used on his Instagram account to promote his art event this weekend. I contacted him on his Instagram page and asked where he got the photo, that it was mine, I had downloaded on FAA in 2012 and I also have it on my web-site and to remove it. He responded could he give me photo credit that I didn't need to show hostility and that he liked the photo and wanted to use it. I asked him again where he found it without my copyright. He said he googled it and it was number 30 on the page. Sure enough I looked on Google and there it was from FAA. It had my name, but when I clicked on image it showed the photo perfectly without a watermark and I could copy it. I have emailed FAA to ask why my watermark is not appearing on my photos. I have not heard back from them. The person gave me photo credit on his Instagram page and also gave my web-site telling people to check out my other work. I just don't know whether he made copies of this or not and selling them at his event this weekend. This is some scary stuff. I want a watermark on my work. I don't see one on my work on FAA. Why? I always saw one before...now I am not seeing it...Anyone else having this problem?

Debbi, I don't see any FAA watermarks on your work! You have to enable the watermark yourself. Edit your images and check the box: enable watermark. I see you've been a member of FAA for several years. Have you never watermarked your work?

Wow....you can still make him remove it before someone else downloads it from him!

That really stinks.
DId you offer him the opportunity to buy the non-exclusive rights to use your event for a price that you would have charged had he asked?
Chances are that when you check the size of that google image that it is a thumbnail and would not print very large. Curious - what is the resolution of said image posted w/o watermark?

I feel your pain. I have already had a photograph used for someone elses website. It happened twice. Google has somehow taken my photographs and put them on Google images. I was under the impression that no one could take phtots from FAA. When I used to right click on a photo, (just to see if I could download it), it wouldn't allow me to do it. With the new set up in my galleries, I can right click on any image and download it! What the heck? I was wondering why my sales diminshed.

I know...I don't see watermarks on my work either. That is my concern. I had them before. Now I don't see them. I have enable watermarks behind the scene...If someone is monitoring this post from FAA please respond as to why my watermarks don't show anymore. I haven't gotten a response from my email to them.
Nancy...it is 900 X 740 on google..
Y'all should seriously randomly check some of your titles on google...then click on image...I just looked up someone randomly and was able to see the same with their work. This is scary...

Anyone can do a screen grab without right clicking. Yes our photos are on Google and that's a good thing! And yes, people will steal our images. That is life on the internet.

Debbi, edit photo and check the box to enable watermark! Behind the scenes is for future uploads. It won't change whats already in your gallery

You can ask Abbie if she's able to apply watermarks on all your images at once.

OMG! Laura same thing is happening to me. Google is letting you click on the image and you can copy it...I didn't think FAA would allow that to happen either...Jessica I have tried that on several photos and it is not working. The only watermark I have is on preview. Jessica...check your photos on google...they do link back to FAA, but if you click on the image you can copy it just like Laura said....Hello FAA...please help me out here...I want watermarks! I don't want someone to copy my photos from google...

Debbie, Yes our images are on Google. They are low-res! People can also remove watermarks if they want. That's the way it is. That is the internet. Nothing is safe.

Even with the watermark they will use it if they want to. I still have them on mine, but just be forewarned that they will still snag them to use for web use. You still can ask them to remove them. Did you contact Instagram to ask them to get the guy to remove it?

Debbi Granruth

Thank you...Andee....I asked him to remove in the beginning and he asked if he could give me a photo credit. He gave me a photo credit and a link to my website...with a notation to check out my work...

I don't think he has 'given' you enough. He is an artist but is using your work - I think that could mean he thinks your work is more attractive to potential customers than his own. He has taken your image and should have to either stop using it or pay you for its use - with credit.

Even if you have said yes to credit and a link you can tell him you have reconsidered and changed your mind.

ANY image you can view on your monitor can be copied using a screen print (screen grab) a couple of clicks is all it takes. It's impossible to stop this as that's how computers work - if you can see it is can be copied! Once your image is on the web anyone can have it. The only thing is they are low res images from FAA so won't print very large.

I know a "geek": digital artist who can remove watermarks from digital prints and up the resolution for reproduction purposes. He then sends them to Tianjin.for printing. Anything is possible today.

l have been advised by a lawyer that an SD (solemn declaration) is a weapon in protecting your copyrighted work.
Anyone got any experience of this, whether it works or not???

Jessica Jenney

I really don't like his attitude! He didn't ask for your permission to use it and he's unapologetic about it. For that reason I would TELL him to please remove it or pay up.

Debbi,
Yes our images are on google, but they are low resolution, that's the world of the internet.
He has not given you enough credit and I would tell him to take it down even if I changed my mind unless he wants to pay.

I just send invoices now with legal threat if they are using my image for profit or promotion in anyway. And I am getting paid for some. The rest take them down.

send them the bill. doesn't matter if the watermark is on it or not. or that he likes the image. his attitude and such suggest to bill him. makes you wonder what he's teaching that he needs someone else's work.
