Cost Of Materials?

Hi all - I'm new to the group and have a newbie question. Approximately how much does material cost for, say, a paper print of a 16" x 20" piece? I see the average asking price is about $75 but how much of that is what you as the artist would receive and how much is cost of materials for Fine Art America?
Thanks so much in advance!

It's a flat rate, but it includes the cost of printing (if that's what you mean)

The artists choose their markup over the other costs i.e. printing, materials and shipping

Hi Twyla,
When I looked at your profile, I saw that you have not uploaded any of your artwork images. Try uploading an image, even if it's not your best one -- just to experiment with what you can do. Once you have an image uploaded, you can click on "Behind the Scenes." You have to be logged in to do all this. The part of Behind The Scenes where you price your work shows you how much FAA takes (it's a fixed amount for each item) and then allows you to decide what your mark-up will be.

Try it and if you still have questions, you can always come back to this thread and ask more questions.

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks so much, Cheryl and Mark!

you don't pay anything. upload the images. add the mark up you want, and if it sells, and the printing quality is high enough, that's the amount you'll get. the site handles everything else.

it is like magic... you don't have to go to the post office, only the bank.

And you don't have to worry about tying your money up with inventory, either :)

Welcome! Just wondering since you are from Canada if there was an automatic conversion since your sales will be in U.S. dollars for the most part?

With Pay Pal, you don't go to the bank anymore either

As a follow-up question - how have you handled orders on your personal websites? Do you run them all through Fine Art America (embed a link that takes visitors to your page here) or do you handle printing/shipping on your own? I'm wondering if I'll lose buyers because of the additional click that takes them to a different website.

Thanks everyone. You're help is invaluable!

PS. See My Photos: I haven't had any financial transactions yet so don't know about the conversion. Will let you know when I do.

i don't have a website that people can order directly, it's why i use POD's you would only lose customers if you made it confusing for them. like if they thought they were buying from FAA with the 30day, but it was really through you, it may be confusing.

i can't see your photos because you didn't upload any.

Sorry for the confusion, Mike. "See My Photos" was the user name of the person I was responding to. But you're right - I haven't uploaded any images yet - still learning about the process, pricing, etc!

Daft question: what does POD stand for?

Honestly, I found the best way to learn about FAA was to jump right in. Upload some stuff, ask for opinions. Folks here will help you out. Initially, I priced my stuff way too low. The good thing about this place, you're always free to change your mind!

Also, you're never going to sell anything if you don't upload anything. -- Captain Obvious

"Daft question: what does POD stand for?"

Print On Demand. That's what FAA does. Someone buys it, they print it.

Ah, Print On Demand. Got it! Thanks!
