Hi Donnie,

I'm sure there are many kinds but I can speak of what I own,

I use Vello Freeware Fusion for Canon

It is wireless, includes both wireless flash trigger for up to 3 light groups. It has dual function shutter release so you can do the half press to focus and full press to trigger.

The wireless range is up to 320 feet

Easy to use.

I can't speak of any other kinds as this is the only one I've used but I know someone that uses the Yongnuo Wireless shutter release and is very happy with it; and it is less expensive but as I said previously, I have not used it personally so cannot really recommend it.

I'm sure other photographers here will chime in and tell you what they use.

:-)
Maggie
p.s. good luck with your purchase

Canon's. .

I went through three of the cheap kind in four months. The fourth I spent the money and bought Canon and it lasted me five years.

I own two canon cable releases. One I bought in 2003, the other my father gave me before he died. I've never had a problem with either.
I've got the extension cables too. No problems there either. Expensive, but equipment you can pretty much forget because it works.
I've used mine a lot in windy, dusty, sandy environments in the southeast. Still no problem. Walked on them, accidentally dragged them over the ground. Not a glitch in sight.

Donnie,

Wireless or mechanical? I've got a short mechanical version that I've had for years and no issues. About 3 feet long. Just used it tonight again. RS-80N3. At times I wished It was a bit longer. Actually have 3 for some reason!

I bought a cheap one off Amazon, works just fine.
There is also an infrared remote from Canon, thats good, had one once, but I sold it on as it doesn't work with my mkII.

If you do not buy OEM (always works if you take care of it) then Vello makes pretty good cheap stuff.

And if you do not have one, Vello makes a decent RF trigger I can recommend - http://www.amazon.com/Vello-FreeWave-Wireless-Shutter-Connection/dp/B005648AY8/ref=sr_1_sc_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1428836945&sr=1-2-spell&keywords=velo+wireless+remote+canon+5d

I am of the theory that two cheap Vello releases in my gear kit is better than one OEM. I like a back up. Of course, if you can afford two OEMs, that's better.

I lent one to a 'friend' once.

Said he'd lost it.

I was like come on man it's only a cheap bulb cable - give it back.

He kept insisting he'd lost it.

I said okay- twenty bucks, and presented my palm

His eyes widened at the thought of having to part with that much

It's worth twice that I said. but twenty because it's a year old - i might be able to pick up a used one

He shrugged and gave me the money
