Backapcker/photographers: Seeking Advice

In the past, I have used a system of a toploader type camera bag to carry my DSLR while backpacking. I was not entirely happy with this system, so this year I am trying out a Cotton Carrier vest.

My question to anyone who has experience with this system is how do you protect the camera if it starts raining? I can see multiple options, but am looking for opinions and what has worked well for you.

I keep a waterproof, hooded poncho in my backpack. Big enough to trow on and cover me and whatever gear is strapped on the front and back, including the bakpack. I don't use the flimsy ponshos that rip easily. They are lightweight but virtually worthless out in the bush.

i always have a sling pack. i have an umbrella, and a parka (dollar store type), garbage bag, and a large ziplock for the camera, along with a hood that covers over the bag (from another bag i had). it just covers the whole thing.
