The Imitation Game

"Sometimes it is the people no one imagines anything of who do the things that no one can imagine." ~ Alan Turing

From the movie The Imitation Game, based on the book Alan Turing: The Enigma by Andrew Hodges
2015 Academy Award for Best Writing Adapted Screenplay

Alan Turing -- the pioneer of modern-day computing -- credited with cracking the so-called unbreakable codes of Germany's World War II Enigma machine, and persecuted in his personal life. The movie's name is based on The Imitation Game -- his version of a party game created to test whether people could determine if responses to a series of questions were human, or machine.

Rare is a movie that captures my attention to this extent -- if you haven't seen it -- you may be pleasantly surprised at this gem.

Beautiful movie and very sad although also very contemporary when you consider Indiana.

re: comma......Not if you hear it the way it is expressed/delivered in the movie -- pure gold.

Definitely will be reading Hodge's book. I'll let you know if there are commas in the quote in text ;)

Edward -- civil rights always an issue...sometimes progress is made.

“He’s such an unsung hero,” says the director. “This is a movie that celebrates those [who] are not afraid to think differently, not burdened by normality. Instead of alienating that, we should celebrate and encourage it.”

Exactly why I feel the quote attributed to Alan, passed on from his mother, has such power.

Imagination...imagine ;)

Alan Turing most certainly has been an unsung hero. That has been historically true of many, if not most, LGBT people who have done exceptional things, but did not hide their sexuality. Bayard Rustin is a great example. He is considered by many of his contemporaries, as well as historians to be the architect of the Black Civil Rights Era. Yet, for many years, his name all but disappeared in the Civil Rights story. Only in the past decade or so has he been given his due.

True, Jim. One our new High Schools is the Bayard Rustin HS, opened in 2006.

I loved this movie - very well written and acted - historically and culturally relevant, as well.

Lindley -- it sure is. The dynamics -- especially between Turing & Clarke -- exceptional.

One of my favorite moments is in regard to the term 'decorous' -- hilarious.

It's a powerful, inspirational statement, Diana.

I just watched it this weekend. It was excellent. After that we found a documentary about him called The Codebreakers. In addition to his war time exploits, it had information about his accomplishments after the war when he turned to the application of mathematics in biology. I wonder if he would have been the one to discover the coding of DNA if he had lived. It is such a tragic story.
