I'm trying to figure out what the final step to awesome is.
I've got a pretty solid outline so far but can't seem to put my finger on the last concept.
I know it's right there, just out of reach.
What's the final hurdle? How did you achieve pure awesomeness?
Step 1: Have an idea.
Step 2: Believe in your idea.
Step 3: Believe in yourself.
Step 4: Act.
Step 5: Act.
Step 6: Learn
Step 7: Fail
Step 8: Believe in yourself
Step 9: Act
Step 10: ????

10.) if and when success finds you .........remain humble........and continue to evolve
EDIT: "What's the final hurdle? How did you achieve pure awesomeness? "
The final hurdle........is the right opportunity coming along....the "right" person liking your work .......achieving it is being In The right place at the right time.....never loosing sight of your goals ....persistence, dedication and sheer obsession..........and spending a lifetime creating your "image" your niche...your brand................you never stop even once it's "discovered" ....always remembering in the back of your mind there's always someone better.....to keep you on you toes, and keep the fire burning.
Just my two cents......
I haven't achieved pure awesomeness but maybe someday.......

10.) Start another discussion and hope THAT one does not get closed.
Try, try again, you know. I have had at least three threads closed, and I count these as successes as to gauging what goes here.
Closure does not equal failure or even rejection, Blaine L. It merely indicates dissonance in the realm of somebody who is trying to please most of the people most of the time.
or 10.) simply give up .... this can be totally awesome, maaaaaan!

10) Close.
You have to complete the idea. Finish it. Close the deal. You can't call it a success until it's done and ready to be launched into the world. As in relationships, you can't start one while you're still in one if you want either to be successful. So 10 has to be Close. You have to call it done at some point.
Then 11 is "see number 1."

how about actually doing it. acting over and over isn't really a step and if you have to repeat steps, you kind of already failed.
1. believe in yourself.
2. believe in your ideas
3. create it
4. do it well
5. be the best in what you do
6. others like it
done.

Mike S. has a valid point.
If repetition produces no change in the outcome, then it really does not count as "awesome."
As an instructor [back in the day] ... from time to time I would encounter a student who had NO sense of rhythm, NO ability to coordinate different parts of their bodies harmoniously, ... just very shocking, when I first encountered it. We would repeat the most basic exercises over and over and over again, and NEVER could they feel or execute the rhythm of the beat.
Repetition, thus, requires evolution as the outcome. Otherwise, it's just repetition, which can be a good thing, if you realize that you are just out to get some exercise.

This is what I tell the kids in my robotics classes. Don't be afraid to make mistakes but make them quick so you have time to try something new.
"Sometimes when you innovate, you make mistakes. It is best to admit them quickly, and get on with improving your other innovations." - Steve Jobs
"Make mistakes faster" - Andrew Grove
“Intelligence is not to make no mistakes, but quickly to see how to make them good.” - Bertolt Brecht

Joe,
the traditional meaning of awesome includes a touch of fear and reverence for its magnitude.
It is a highly misused, overused word today. One of my et peeves, as a matter of fact.
If one was to describe the creator and use that word, it would simply mean He is totally cool, by today's standards.
SO, are you looking for a formula to get to totally cool or what?
mistakes are fine, as long as you can:
1. learn from them
2. recognize it was a mistake
3. gain insight for them
4. take advantage of them - they may be your next new idea. many of my things came from happy accidents. in fact many of the worlds inventions came from accidents and mistakes. also some of the biggest disasters as well.
some people think making mistakes is a good thing, i simply call that an excuse. but as long as you can work around it, or improve yourself because of it, then its fine. but i wouldn't add it to a list of awesomeness, because making mistakes is usually a sign of failure.

As much as the "rinse and repeat" theory sounds philosophically accurate, I'm not sure going back to the beginning is the solution I'm looking for here.
"Enjoy" is a good one. That is the purpose of it all, is it not?
Mike, regardless of you butchering my sequence, I have to ask, does awesomeness require that "others like it"?
The repetitive steps are there for a reason. Without them, what you have is a couch potato with a New Year's Resolution gym membership.
Marlene, well said. I'm not looking for "cool" at all. "Reverent Creator" type stuff is more what I'm talking about. Fear can be a common response to such things, but is not a necessary one.
Yeah, Swezey!!! I think you're onto something there.

of course it does. you can't call yourself awesome. because if you do, then you don't need a list, just do that.
1. i'm awesome.
repeat 9 more times.
you shouldn't have to repeat it each time. know it, like, do it. and that's it. you don't need 10 steps, i don't know why we need to follow the metric system here. use a simpler formula. the list you have procrastinates too much... act, then do something. act again, do something else.
Step 1: Have an idea. --- this part is good
Step 2: Believe in your idea. --- this part is ok also
Step 3: Believe in yourself. --- this is the same as step 2
Step 4: Act. - just do it
Step 5: Act. - this is redundant.
Step 6: Learn - this should be step 4
Step 7: Fail - this shouldn't be a step at all
Step 8: Believe in yourself -- you already believed in yourself, and if you failed then you failed, if you gave up there was no point to having a list. its better to run the idea in your head first then to simply failing and patting yourself on the back later on.
Step 9: Act - again, redundant. this should be experiment.
Step 10: ???? anything you want it to be. success depends on what your goal was. if your goal was to experiment to see what works, then you won't know what step 10 is.
it depends on your end goal.

To me,
If labor IS the fruits, one can never enjoy not eating them (retirement)

See, to me step #10 is the intangible, the veil, the magic. The untouchable separation between truth and reality. It's undefinable and unique to each individual.
Claiming to know the answer takes a certain type of brazen and reckless confidence. Declaring it through a lens of humility is key.
This, I believe, is one of the most crucial components to pure awesomeness (nod to Ms. Pike).
Do not confuse success with awesomeness. They are not the same thing.
As Mike has hinted at, awesomeness just is. It's a state of being. Success comes from when others appreciate and accept your awesomeness as part of their own.
By posting to this thread, you have already made claims of possessing great knowledge and have possibly even suggested that you yourself are awesome.
Now we can let this thread die and go back to complaining about how the forum has become a place for image dumping and view solicitation, or we can take this opportunity to continue discussing what is essentially the greatest conversation topic ever conceived by man.
Awesome!

Joe,
You didn't post IN MY OPINION in big enough font in your last post.
I get it now...YOUR opinion carries more weight than anyone else's opinion. Your opinion of how important this thread is, is....welll.....err.....rather over inflated.
:::note to self::::Joe's threads are just for baiting.

I'm sorry you see it that way, Marlene.
No baiting intended. My intentions are to discuss things I consider interesting, and hopefully to learn from like-minded individuals.
Not sure I care to sit here and defend your misplaced attack. My last post starts with the words, "See, to me..."
If I have offended you in some way, don't participate.

Sounds like this thread is about attitude more than anything, that is something I really need to work on. I've heard that confidence is a skill, requires study and practice like any other skill. I'd assume anybody that is "awesome" has confidence.

successful people - usually don't make long lists. they just do it because they have the confidence in themselves to be awesome just like that
I pretty much agree.
The things in which I have been the most successful involved no lists at all, no precursor self talk, no stepwise system of approach. They were more like feelings or sensations that found a loop, grabbed hold, and just kept on looping back and gabbing hold with an inexplicable instinct to get better. Lists came late in the process, related mainly to what I had already done without lists.
I wouldn't even say that I was aware of any confidence. I just wanted to do whatever I was doing, because it felt right at that time. I might replace the word, "confidence", with "courage".
Awesome, then is the result of reflexes embraced with courage, NOT the result of logical lists preconceived.
10.) Stop making lists, and admit that you have been failing all along, up until NOW.

@Mike S. - I like the points you bring up in your 1st post.
@Marlene - Thanks for taking the words out of my mouth re: the over mis-use of the word "awesome" (which is a pet peeve of mine, too).
I think the idea of a list can be eradicated by doing one thing: always acting meaningfully and with intention.

David, whether it's in ourselves or just in the nature of things, confidence is definitely an important factor. Without it, we're too afraid to poke our heads out.
Robert, great explanation. That's exactly what awesome feels like. Just moving in sync with the universe... and vice versa.
Mike, I've certainly considered that. But then there are moments when the dream becomes tangible just as Robert describes above.

Just for the record, the "list" is irrelevant.
It's a generic set of items that came to mind over the course of 30 seconds as I was attempting to think of a clever way to start a much larger conversation.
It's a metaphor, not a rule set by any means.

One of my pieces has been selected for display at the Springville Museum of Art from April through July.
This is Utah's 1st and oldest fine art museum and describes itself as a "Sanctuary of Beauty and a Temple of Contemplation".
