Merlin Or Martha Stewart?

Is your studio a model for Merlin the Magician? A replica of a cottage overstuffed with bric a brac, books, found objects, perhaps a stuffed animal or two?

Or, perhaps you are Martha Stewart, the minimum of what is needed and generally very tidy and well coordinated?

I confess as a small boy (and still) I was fascinated by Merlin’s fabulous collection of…stuff. However my tidy nature still wins out.

My personal habit is a bit of both. My studio is nearly always tidy when I am not working. Clean, well arranged. But Merlin is still present in my art life. In my studio are interesting looking pieces of driftwood, coconuts picked up in Hawaii, deer bones, and a small piece of wood to which various interesting looking insects are pinned. Of course the requisite art books, brushes, and other art folderol.

What about you?

YES! This is me to a tee

Merlin, definitely. I transformed our dining room into an improvised art studio. My husband keeps trying to evict me, so he can use the dining room for eating dinner, but he can't because my art-magic is too strong.... wooo-hooo-ha-ha-ha.

Merlin!

Very funny. Alfred, you did not answer the question. But thank you for correcting my error. (seriously)

My studio is neat as you can see but my wife still gigs me because it is often dusty. Oh well.

What kinds of things do you have in your studios? Other than art things of course.

Nice spot! I just move my area, I'll post a shot tomorrow. I tend toward Merlin although I wish for neat and orderly.

BTW - Vanity Fair always has a feature showing the desks of famous people. Its fun to look at people's knick knacks.

Kevin, I called my studio "organized creative mess" but I always able to find things I looking for. I used to called it "the world smallest museum ( all my own works) but after I started to make a living and started to sell I changed the name.

This is what my studio looks like. Some days it's really messy. I guess I'm in between Merlin and Martha. Art Prints

Oh, by the way, regarding Martha being clean and tidy:

Did you hear her dirty mouth last night?

Jean, those are wax molds of breasts yes. They belong to my artist son who is living here and working on a long term art project. The paintings on the wall are self portraits the full length one is when I was 24.

Darice you have a great studio, very tidy.

Roger, me thinks you need a maid. Did not hear about Martha.

As promised - now this is just my new digital workspace. Up in the rafters. Spiral staircase leads up to this finished "attic" space. The rest of the mess (i.e. prop storage) gets spread out throughout the house but is optimally confined to the basement where my studio lights are set up.

This is a work in progress as I try to get more organized and resist pack rat urges and think towards a future retirement move - I have to plan way way ahead to simplify.

Beautiful space, and rightly so you have accommodated the dog. I too have a gallery dog, who is sleeping a few feet away as I type. My office is right next to my gallery, it is very comfortable but definitely Merlin, with papers scattered all about.

Best thing is its warmer up in the attic. I used to share space with my son in his room over the garage and froze all winter.

I have to tidy up quite often, clutter raises my stress level for some reason, makes me anxious. I guess I'm just a bit OCD that way.

Kevin, right now mine looks more like Merlin has set up shop in Sanford and Son’s yard… not neat...
Not in this picture but on the other side of the room are bones, stones, insects, mushrooms, lichen, feathers, coral and a drawer full of dead things...

Thanks Kevin, I tidied it up a bit for that photo. At the moment it looks more like Merlin's cave.

Ed I think you are my hero.

Darice, my shot is has a work in progress but I moved the large buckets of paint out of the shot.

I think everyone is neater than I'd expect. It's tough having so many materials to store. Of course Martha would have everything put away. But Merlin produced more magic.

As I am on holiday and I don't carry a wallet photo of my gallery studio.. well.. I will have to improvise here...I have a space about as large as the OP's maybe larger and it is a mixture of Martha Stewart and Merlin. so there..I contributed lol...Have a great day everyone. JGP

Hmm...didn't consider the issue of size before. That may be one reason I have to keep it neat, (besides my touch of OCD). My space is pretty small, about 10' X 12' with a closet about 2' X 8' I took the doors off of. So, I have to keep on top of the mess or I'll get lost in it pretty quickly. I might have a couple photos at home, if I do I'll post them tonight.

Andy PYRAH

Hmm David, 10 x 12 sounds like a dream to me. All I have is a corner, the size of your closet, in our living room so every thing has to be tidy and put away after each session.
In the opposite corner is our office space.
My pictures are either hung all over the house or stored in the garage ( I constructed a mezzanine especially for storage).

David King

That's a bummer Andy. If I have to set up and tear down every time I wanted to paint I just would never start, I'd probably just stick with drawing and maybe the occasional plein air.

Kevin Callahan

Andy/David I always called that "painting behind the couch," which I did for many years before I got my own studio in 1997. I have been in 4 homes since and each studio space gets better.

Merlin did make magic! Isn't that what we do?

Edward Fielding

That's what I mean. Too much neatness dampens creativity.

David King

And I can't function in a mess. We are all different.

As promised here are the photos of my studio. I took these photos last summer so it looks a bit different now but the layout is essentially the same.
