I never dreamt this would become the topic that it did.
For clarification purposes, I was HOSTING a contest. Yes, I had an entry in the contest, but all along, I was requesting that people NOT vote for my work (see: http://fineartamerica.com/showmessages.php?messageid=2427593 ). This contest was to decide whose image was going to be the next logo image for the group. That said, there was no option to allow 4, 3, or even 2 people to win. I needed ***1*** person to win. Period.
Seeing the dilemma I was in, I turned to the Group and Contest Moderators' forum for advice on how to handle a tie, and one of the suggestions was to ask other artists to come vote in the competition in the hopes that it would break the tie. Consequently, throughout the prior weekend, I was in this very discussion forum asking my fellow artists to come support and vote in the contest. It didn't seem to be a problem then; only when it was getting down to the wire and I asked for a few more votes did it seem to become a problem. I was not aware that trying to promote my group's artists and asking other artists to come vote for them would be viewed as such a controversial move on my part.
I purposely didn't list this contest as a general public contest because I knew it would be fraught with issues, but apparently listing it as a FAA artists voting only contest, and then subsequently asking my fellow artists to come vote in said contest, has proven to be fraught with its own set of issues.
If anyone's preferred piece didn't win, may I suggest that, instead of complaining that I somehow slighted that artist or their work, do that artist a favor and go comment on their work and tell them how much you enjoy it. At the end of the day, what means the most is supporting each other, and you will likely bring a smile to that artist's face by leaving a comment on their work. I would say that, down the road, when I hold another contest for this group, you are welcome to vote for that preferred piece of art, but given the backlash I'm receiving for legitimately asking FAA ARTISTS to come cast votes (and not asking for votes for myself or for any one specific artist), all future contests that I hold will likely be decided by a jury.
It's a shame when someone is trying to help promote artists and their work and people manage to find a problem in that.
MANY THANKS to those of you who saw what I was doing and supported my actions.
MANY MORE THANKS to those of you who went and supported the artists and voted in the competition.
