What Would I Do Without Flickr?!!!!

OMG... I have been with Flickr since 2007. YOU MUST join Flickr, if you haven't already. I cannot tell you how much this site has given back to me... A GEM for me. If it weren't for Flickr, I would never have a photo of mine on a cover of a best selling novel with Random House Publishers, nor many sales with Getty Images. Greeting cards in London of my cat. I was contacted by several magazines for commerical license.. including a local Applebee's restaurant in New Rochelle, New York for a sale of one of my local photographs which will be on display in their new location opening in April. I was just contacted tonight by another restaurant in Michigan who wants to feature a photo of mine along with 15 other selected for a wall display for their establishment. I LOVE Flickr!

Sounds very successful indeed - congrats !

Congratulations on your Flickr success Diana!

I too have had several images noticed on Flickr that led to my biggest sales plus several other opportunities resulting from being on Flickr. I slacked off putting images on there the last year or two because I know people like to steal them from anywhere in the world. I also like that it is also useful as a "cloud backup".

An image of mine was found on Flickr which a company wanted to use for the cover of the local Phone Directory. The next year they asked if they could use a different one. They were my biggest sales until this month when an advertising agency wanted permission to use one of my images for a commercial publication for use in the Baltimore Arena for 10 - 12 months. Coincidentally, I received their check in the mail today. This time however they apparently found my image via Fine Art America.

I actually made a sale on Flickr also! I had an advertising company contact me for an image to use in an ad campaign to sell houses and condos in a new development. I had a picture from a local arboretum that they purchased.

For those posting at Flickr and occasionally selling, are you posting hi-res images, or low res? I tend to keep mine small, 900 to 800 on the long side, due to the "taking" of things from the net. I know, if they want it, they'll find a way to get it, but it's gonna be a low res one from my collection.

Congrats! I've avoided Flickr so far because of the reasons stated by Greg.

I know I have a lot of older stuff on there i need to remove, and attempt to only have my better images only.

I've been on Flickr since 2006 and have made my biggest sales there to cities and municipalities, a railroad or two and have had other bites as well. For some reason, anti-railroad or anti-coal people ask to use my shots. SMH The folks against more light rail in Charlotte, NC could not understand why I would not give them a shot of the light rail in Charlotte. SMH I actually post high res versions there and so far have not found any that were lifted. (Low res, yes, but not high res)

I'm with Edward! I've avoided FLICKR for the same reason. Congrats, Diane!

I've done well myself, matter of fact that is how Diane found me

As Greg does, I only post tiny low resolution web versions. Along with aggressive watermarks. My google analytics tells me I see quite a bit of traffic referred from Flickr to my homepage and that is a good thing

You can manage your Flickr site to not allow yahoo to use for blogs or sell.

Kristia Adams

I usually post small to medium resolution photos and most are watermarked. The agency contacted me via Flickr and asked for a high-res, non-watermarked file.

Well done, Diana!!

Here is my thread on the subject, share your link there and follow everyone ... they should follow back:

http://pixels.com/showmessages.php?messageid=1874455

Sometimes we share images privately for feedback before posting to FAA.

That's a plus about Flickr, and the 1tb of free storage space is what kept me there. I used to participate in a few groups there. Still belong, but not active in them.

I like Flickr too I may delete my Facebook page and use it exclusively Do you add links to your images or just in your main profile?

Diana Angstadt

Flickr has opened up amazing sales for me over the years. People contact you. You will always get people who want to pay nothing, but you also will get people who WILL pay. I actually have my images on that a full resolution. A lot of people upload smaller sizes. I don't worry about people stealing. I guess because Flickr does have restrictive settings on their site to deter people from stealing, but even if they do... I have gotten over that issue. I know darn well that people steal. People can even take screen shots of images and doctor them up to make them look authentic. I have seen many people steal my stuff through the years, BUT with everyone that steals.... I have made some truly GREAT sales.... So worth it for me

Alfred Ng

Judy, no need to delete Facebook you can link your flickr uploads to Facebook as well.

Valerie Reeves

Wow. Very interesting. I had a Flickr account for years, then closed it because of a crazy stalker about 5 years ago. I had no idea it had come so far and could be such a valuable tool to sales now.

Peggy Collins

I've been on Flickr for many years but haven't posted anything there for the past two. It was through Flickr that I hooked up with Getty for a few years and made some good money. People also contacted me personally and that led to sales and licensing my photographs in quite a few books, many ads, card companies including three times from Hallmark, and even a run of limited edition coffee bags. But I will say that a few of my photos have been widely stolen and to this day are being sold on phone cases on Amazon, for example. I also got pestered a lot for donations to various causes. Personally I can't see posting high res images on Flickr...why make it easier for thieves? I posted at 800 pixels on the widest dimension.

" I like Flickr too I may delete my Facebook page and use it exclusively "

Done a few months ago. AMAZING!!

I upload images full res and also use Flickr as private independent back-up. Its in my opinion the best place to store, sort, and share photography online.

Once I turned sharing 'on' ( so followers can share to their social media, ect. ) the amount of pirating of my images plummeted. So there is now full attribution back to my account. My stats are soaring and many are referrals to FAA through my profile.

Aidan Moran

Hi all, do you need a Yahoo E-Mail address to join Flickr.

Frank J Casella

Try it, Aidan, I think Yahoo went away from the Facebook lonin thing ... I've noticed more of the newer profiles with a Yahoo address too.

Julie Senf

I looked into joining Flickr a month ago but it wanted me to created a Yahoo account and I backed out because I have so many other different accounts, I was frustrated to have to start another with yet another company. After reading some of these comments though I'm thinking maybe I should.

*Frank, you say "full attribution back to my account" Can you explain that further to someone that hasn't a clue what it means please?

I can understand uploading images in low resolution with/without watermarks, but how exactly do people find the images and ask to use them if the account "sharing" is not turned on? How do companies/people ask to use the images, is it via contacting through the Yahoo account/emails?

*Diana, do you create a contract with these companies that have bought your images?

also, is flickr mainly for photography or do some of you put your artwork images up?

LOTS of questions, I know. If any of you want to take the time to answer that is great.

Frank J Casella

Julie -- attribution means when someone shares my images and the views that sees it clicks on it ... they come back to my account.

Here is an example with my Tumblr ( the same goes for my WordPress ) http://frankjcasella.tumblr.com/ I share direct to Tumblr and others can share my images direct to Tumblr too.
You will see under each image a link, but you can also click the picture.

I'm also involved in them groups ( just like on FAA ) and many who search these groups can be editor or art collectors. So, yes, you can post photos and art and there is a category for each.

The Flickr search was just updated and if you go to my thread that I shared a few posts ago you will see I recently posted about it ( as of this post ). People more and more search Flickr for pictures like people search YouTube for video. You may also opt for Yahoo to share your images on all their platforms, Yahoo Weather app for example.

EDIT: I'm now seeing about 2000 views per day on my images. The audience is at least five times larger than FAA.

EDIT again: The way people contact us in Flickr is mostly through FlickrMail which is very much like Direct Message on FAA. You can also leave contact information on your profile, and many use understand Flickr go right there to contact you.

As an example here is the short link to my profile, copy and paste it in your browser: http://tinyurl.com/FJCFlickrProfile

Earl Eells a

Does anybody know if it's possible to have an account with Flickr that would allow you to upload pictures to your Fine Art America website and would automatically upload pictures to Flickr that would be handled through fine art America if someone ordered a picture. I like the idea of everything being handled through fine art America rather than some other company. Anybody have any thoughts on this I'd appreciate any help you can give me.

I guess what I'm asking is there a way to make it work like it does with Facebook and twitter?

Frank J Casella

Earl -- Flickr works more like a hub or embassy for your photography, so it would have no purpose to work like Facebook or Twitter.

Valerie -- "It doesn't look anything like the Flickr I remember. Looks like FAA, Crated, Society6, etc... " In fact, FAA works much like Flickr and I would not be surprised if Sean ( the owner of FAA ) used it as a model when he built FAA.

Aidan -- " Do you work for Flickr, Frank. ". No, and don't care to .... I just think Flickr is awesome.

One thing I forgot to mention is that if you join the weekly groups they are not only fund to participate but they also help you get found and ranked. Some examples might be " Wednesday Wall" or "Friday Fence" or this one I think is " Saturday Square Format ".

Diana - sorry for taking over your thread, I didn't expect it. Please forgive me.

Alfred how do you link flickr uploads to Facebook ..and from what devices? Frank where do you turn sharing "on"? Is that a setting in Flickr itself or on your phone or pc?
pardon my confusion but I had an android phone but 3 days ago switched to the iPhone 6+. I thought by doing so that my workflow would be more compatible but so far I don't see that as true!

Frank J Casella

Judy -- When on the website click on your avator on the top RIGHT and click 'settings'. It's at the tab for 'privacy and permissions".

Alfred Ng

Judy, like Frank said click on your icon which will open "setting", then click on sharing&extending whenever you upload to flickr it will also show up on Facebook, twitter and Tumbir.

Frank J Casella

That's because with email today I understand when you create a new account you have to wait a day or three, because of how the spammers create new accounts.... Or something like that. You can't just use it right away.

I've been a member since 2007 and have had quite a few leads form there. With me it's an on again/off again love affair with Flickr. The thing I can't stand most is the sign in. I'd say about 75% of the time it won't let me sign in and I usually have to wait a while to attempt again. You would think that with it's popularity and this many users, that the sign in would be a lot easier. Definitely a pain to sign in with yahoo when I don't use Yahoo for anything but Flickr.

Other than that I love what Flickr has to offer. The format and ease of upload is great. I think I'll try and sign in again and see what happens :)

Frank J Casella

HAHAHAHAH .... Alfred !!! I was just thinking the same thing. .... I'm on everyday ... several times a day ... no login issues.

I also use my yahoo address for newsletter subscriptions .... check that once per day too.... so maybe this prevents my from having login issues???

Lisa Kaiser

I'm going to start using my flickr account... I have been ignoring it, but I'll start posting more pics there. Congrats to all of you who have sold images. Thank you Diana for the tip.

Joann Vitali

Alfred, Frank, that is what I will be doing at home from now on. I'll just have to stop trying to log in to the app from my phone. That's what throws everything off and locks me out. Then I can't even log on from home.

Anyway Frank, do you know that if I enable sharing, and if someone shares my photo, it will link back to that photo on Flickr? I realize that I'm going to have to now go in and put a copyright on all my photos.

David Bridburg

Flickr and Tumblr are related as owned by Yahoo. Can you post to Tumblr and automatically have the image seen on Flickr?

Also besides the view counts, is there any demographics data anywhere? Google Analytics does not cover Yahoo products.

Open questions to all.

Dave

Judy Kay

Thanks Frank and Alfred, I had my sharing on" but my Facebook was not enabled. Very important question. I suspect it will link to my Facebook personal profile,,,which I don't won't, I don't see a way to divert the choice to the page....Also there are only two options for sharing,,,Facebook and twitter/tumbler...can you add google+ or Tsu...

Are you'll using the new beta photo installer, I think frank is but how is that working out,,,,I have the installer but haven't used it for fear that it will Muddle up my view when I am on my site with myriads of images.. I would hope that since they are private i will be able to view just the images that are public!

I log off from flickr on pc but never have a problem logging in again,,knock on wood,, I have a yahoo att/account, I suspect that keeps the process working ok .

Frank J Casella

Lisa -- Please share your Flickr URL and lets connect.

Joann -- Maybe you need to just login to Flickr more often or, as Alfred says, don't log out. I on both the web version and the app for iPad ( which I think blows away Instagram app by the way ) and I have no login problems. Don't know if you are on Android or not, but I first would try to login at least once every other day and see what happens.

With regards to sharing, yes, what Dave said especially with Tumblr because it is a Yahoo product. I don't think you have to put your copyright on everything, if you're going to put sharing on just you just got over that hurdle to get over it. In fact, when I took my copyright notice off I got more buyer interest. Flickr Copyright policy is the most photographer friendly I have found. I'm following someone who put this to the test and I'll see if I can find the article and post it in this thread.

Dave -- I'm not concerned about demographics data, because what makes this a no brainer, for example, is that Yahoo is now the default search engine for Firefox browser. I would think that Flickr photos take the top of the line like YouTube does on Google search??

The article mentioned in this profile is what I understand helped Flickr to be more photographer friendly http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebekka_Gu%C3%B0leifsd%C3%B3ttir

Can you post the link to your Flickr account here?

Frank J Casella

You can change the Flickr URL from the one with the numbers to something more like a domain, but you only get one shot at it so make it good.

Click your avatar at the top right and then click "settings". You should see the option under "personal settings" to change your URL. I don't see it anymore as I did this already, so let me know if you find it.

Otherwise this is you full URL at present .... FAA members copy and paste the full address https://www.flickr.com/photos/131448056@N02

Oh very cool. Yeah I have been sticking with holdenthemoment for everything and it seems to be working out well. Haven't ran into anyone using the same name yet like I have with my own name.
