A New Dawn For Sculpture

Looks like there's a new kid on the block in the rapidly evolving world of 3-D printing.

Just think what this will do for sculpture. No doubt the usual Luddites will say "it's not art - the computer did it all for you"

New 3D printer 'grows' its objects http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-31923730

There's a place for all kinds of art. I see a 3D printed sculpture as being no different than a digitally painted image, they are created on the computer by the artist who uses a machine to bring them into the physical world. There always will be those collectors that prefer their art to be made by hand though, not that one is better or worse than the other, they are just different. 3D printing will not replace traditional sculpture anymore than the camera replaced painting. It's just another tool to create another kind of art. I'll admit I have a bit of a Luddite tendency but I'll never say something is not art just because it's created digitally. Keep in mind this isn't the first time that digital technology has made incursions into sculpture, CNC controlled machines have been cutouting out and shaping materials for artists for decades now.

This is not too new. Saw 3d art in MOMA about 6 years ago.

Agreed 3-D CAD has been around for decades, with sculpting tools, lathes etc., but this method of producing, more akin to growing, rather than layering plastic filaments is a very interesting development.

I agree it's an interesting development in 3D printing technology but I'm not sure how its any different as far as producing art goes. The biggest impact this new evolution of 3D printing technology will be in mass production. The previous technologies were too slow and therefore too expensive for mass production, this new evolution could change all that.

Finally, X Y and Z planes can be addressed. Nice! Looking forward to the home model.

3d print technology will grow a staggering amount in the next 20 years. There are tons of applications outside of the art world that will help push it forward.

If you don't trip on it while backing up to look at a painting it ain't sculpture.

must admit ive nearly knocked overv a few sculpture pieces in galleries and once the entire room was a scupltured work of art observable from an outside upper level - as i wondered round trying to find "it" where i was it, or rather part of it, the organic inside the sculptured spherical room of.... empty space... i think

Thanks for sharing this Richard -- definitely yet another evolution in 3D printing....

Yes, I cannot wait for these to become commodity items like home printers.
