Computer Stuff - Registry Cleaner

Ok - so I've used WinZip an Geek Tech Tool Box - and it's that time to pay the piper again. Do any of you use a Registry cleaner/updater if so - who are you happy with ?

thanks. rd

ccleaner ( crap cleaner) free editions and premium available. You can tick off what you want cleaned or left alone. User friendly
I clean up about 300-400 megs daily

I just added PC Plus as well, which is very impressive, recommended by Kim Komando, computer guru. It is an intuitive problem...you type in your program and it fixes it.

I'll second CCCleaner, but be very careful. You can speed up your machine or you can render it pretty much useless.

i use cc cleaner, but always make a back up. some of these cleaners are far too aggressive and do remove important things.

Microsoft Security Essentials has one that is free which I keep running all the time. I also just downloaded the free version of CCleaner also. I understand using more than one works better or is that security systems? Anyhow my computer is working better since adding CCleaner. I usually do a search on e-how.com for recommendations also, that is where I found the recommendation for CCleaner and the website. They recommend never paying for a cleaner.

OK - so I did a little research on my own about the "best registry cleaner" for my windows 7 pro dell : http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_programs/registry-cleaner-that-works-well-with-windows-7/3cc582fe-e4e1-4896-a427-bd245c9b5786

I'm not sure what a Microsoft MVP is - but this is what he said ( a bit dated - 2009)

I strongly recommend against *all* registry cleaners, with Windows 7 or any
other version of Windows.

Registry cleaning programs are *all* snake oil. Cleaning of the registry
isn't needed and is dangerous. Leave the registry alone and don't use any
registry cleaner. Despite what many people think, and what vendors of
registry cleaning software try to convince you of, having unused registry
entries doesn't really hurt you.

The risk of a serious problem caused by a registry cleaner erroneously
removing an entry you need is far greater than any potential benefit it may
have.

That's why I like ccleaner..it lets you pick what you want to clean.
I'm also suspect of a 9 year old comment.....things have changed a lot in all technology arenas.
ccleaner updates weekly.
If you do not clean, your computer gets very sluggish.

I used a registry cleaner once and that was the last time!

I agree with Roy!

My computer is not sluggish because I defrag regularly.

I agree with Jessica and Roy. I have one included with my Bit Defender Total Security suite but have not had a need to use it. I have Windows auto defrag set up for once a week and my computer runs great.

Same as Mark, I have my computer set to auto defrag once a week.

I'm with Roy.

Unattached registry entries aren't a drag on performance. If you've had your computer for 10 years and have never reformatted it, and you've and installed and uninstalled hundreds of software packages, you might get a performance boost from cleaning the registry. Otherwise, not necessary these days.

some of the biggest drags on performance are software you don't use, random "add on" installs like toolbars and printer/hardware management software packages that you don't need, and of course adware, spyware and malware.

cc cleaner for me. No problems so far. I messed with the registry once and that was enough. If you don't know how it really works... leave it for the professionals!

Some registry cleaners are free and good. And some are nasty, and do evil things. Others can have problems. Google registry cleaner reviews, and choose a review by somebody you trust, like maybe cnet, and then do that. There's no particularly good reason to pay for a registry cleaner.

They are "snake oil". Find out WHY you need to use them (what screwed up your registry). Windows has troubleshooter and fixes under control panel that will take care of almost all your problems. Even I can understand them. My favorite is to keep track of when your PC is acting right and when it goes bad, restore it to the last known good marker. Another is to schedule a defrag once a month. That is all most of the after market programs do to speed your system up - that is, besides collect data or pass viruses/bugs so you will need their services again.
