I just uploaded my first "real" book from Blurb and also made an eBook version. It has 100 pages, pretty big and 11x13 Large Landscape format. Blurb has a 30% which runs out tonight, but I had posted this info 3 days ago, so hopefully some were able to take advantage of the deal. Over 100 images. I ordered 2 copies, one for me and one for the Mom! and with shipping,eBook, and a few other features, both books came in at $168. I should have the books by the first of April. It will be available on Amazon in 3 days, but with a hefty price tag, $149 I think, with their commission added in. The eBook is around $25, so that's seems reasonable.
I had intended to make 2 large books and then with the discount, order 3 smaller versions for my family, but found out today, there is NO way to take the days of work that I put into this book and then simply convert to a smaller format!!! Bummer! You have to then go and start All over again! Stupid! I also found out that when I created an eBook, the font on some of the pages and cover wasn't available for eBooks and I had to make some last minute changes, which I guess are alright.
Here's the link to my hardcover:
http://www.blurb.com/books/6069768-so-far
The hardcover version shows ALL the pages and the eBook only 30.
So if anyone has any questions about building your own book, let me know and I'll try and answer them. Blurb is relatively easy, but not always intuitive, but once you get the steps down, pretty easy to work with and design the covers, pages, etc.
Thanks for looking,
Rich

Rich, are you sure you ticked the box for it to be publicly viewed?
I did a search and the book "so Far" is only showing up as an e book, but here is the preview:

The preview looks great, Rich! I make much smaller books, 2-3 a year. I show the whole book...just 20 pages.
I used a $10 coupon for my latest with mypublisher.com.
Here is the book ( maybe!) lol

Rich, Marlene's preview link to your site works -yours still doesn't-you provided the same link as the first thread-use her preview link until you figure this all out. Hate for you to have to take all those unnecessary trips. Great work!! Congrats!!

Marlene,
VERY NICE! Looks like a BOOK! I think I made both the eBook and the hardcover available, since it will be on Amazon in a few days......
I tried the newest link:
http://www.blurb.com/books/6069768-so-far
And it opens to the hardcover preview page which shows all the 100 pages. What am I doing wrong?
Let me go and see if something on Blurb is still shut off...........Just got a full tank of gas, just in case............

Marlene,
By the way, have you had any issues with color on MyPublisher? I did years ago and the tech guy was saying that their Fuji printers ADJUSTED ALL COLORS and they couldn't turn it off!

Even though I put the book on FB,which I thought was a "share", there was a separate "share" for the hardcover,so give this a try and save me some gas money...........

Looks like it's working for me, on my computer!
Two things to remember:
1. This is my first book and really not intended to be sold to the general public.
2. Not as nice as Marlene's!!! LOL!

I never have had color issues in the past with mypublisher but I'm also not a photographer, so I can't even imagine what you are looking for. My latest book is on its way and I will look for color accuracy.
I'd go back to blurb and reset how you want the book to be offered. Glitches come and go, but i agree, do not send out any links until you are sure they go to where they need to...I'm still sitting on mine for the same reason. ;) Don't hesitate to contact them directly to get this worked out so you can start promoting!
OOps, were we typing at the same time.....you are good to go.
Question about the e book....Do they suggest markup? I got one for free when they first promoted them but I figured someone could just as easily look at my website and see the same thing...I only charged $4.99. I have opted for e books since...and I know things change a lot!

FINALLY!!! This took almost as long as the book itself!!!
Dorothy,Sydne, Thank you! It was a "Labor of Love", this time around, but the NEXT book should be even betterer!
Marlene, I think I'm selling the eBook for $9.99 and it seems only will download to an iPad? Does that sound right? Can you preview it on your iPad and see for me? Even better, buy a few copies and see if the accounting is set up right......................LOL!

Lawrence, thanks! And I'm sure she will! Better than that shoe box of photos!!!
Marlene, I think I set it for $20 net to me. I really don't think anyone is going to buy this, really,at any price! LOL!
Vale,Thank you! It was relatively easy, once I learned my way around. Next book will be shorter and look more like somebody's here(Marlene's,shhhhh)

The book arrived today, Rich.
Including shipping from New York, it took 11 days.
The color looks very accurate when compared to my monitor.
I used high gloss pages this time around and LOVE them!
All for $10...I'm a happy camper.

Rich Franco and Marlene Burns,
Your books are both fantastic! I hope you make lots of sales.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of Blurb vs MyPublisher vs Shutterfly, etc?
I have done one book for the family on Shutterfly and found it very intuitive to work with, and the price seemed in line with others.

In the past, I've held held the opinion that blurb does a better job simply because they will market your book as well. They partnerw ith Amazon. They have traditionally given you all the tools to do so on your own. I didn't have time to look at the updated websites for each.
The mypublisher software wasn't as user friendly, IMO, but it has caught up.
mypublisher is catching up in quality too. customer service is fine at both companies.
mypublisher offers better coupons for printing.
I've produced 4-5 books with each company.

Richard,
A few years ago, I did 2 'test" books with MyPublisher and they weren't great, mostly the issue with a few images and color. At that time, they had Fuji Printers and the software in the printers, adjusted certain colors, greens and blues, I think and they couldn't disable that. At that time, the majority of their business was Portrait and weddings. If Marlene is happy with her books, then they've fixed that issue. I'll get my books(2) soon, since I received an email, that they shipped and will let everyone know.
Here's the link to Amazon and these books are selling like "hot cakes"!!! Month OLD hot cakes!!! LOL! I never intended to have this book available to the public, since it was really for my Mom, but now that I see there is some potential, I might invest some time and do a more "How To" photo book, which is something I've talked about for years. Maybe 20 images and then an explanation of what I did to get that shot. Let me know if THIS link doesn't work!!! LOL.

Thanks for the feedback. I will play around with Blurb. When I first tried using it I felt it was not that user friendly, but maybe they have improved it.

Rich,
Please don't take my assessment on my color to mean that the problem you had is fixed..I'd call customer service for that answer.
You know what I take pix of and the 'equipment' I use. lol.
Richard,
Both companies will create the book for you, so you do not have to self build..that's an option for many that will make the process easy-peasy.
I always build my own since I am very detailed oriented. it was easier to learn how to navigate the software than to make peace with their choices for size, placement, etc....but I bet many people are very satisfied. ;)

Richard,
LIke FAA is "user freindly"............I can walk you through the basics,if you want, on the phone. First just get a few images and I used the uploads from FAA and then download "Bookwright". They have some videos and Youtube must have hundreds to watch,

Marlene,
On Amazon, the book doesn't have a preview of any pages inside, is that right? Do I need to do something for a review?
Rich

Hi Rich,
I have made a few books for others with Blurb through the years, but last year had one done of my own work and I was very pleased. I do not know which paper you used, but I think you will be very pleased. I ordered their paper swatches (that they reimburse if and when you purchase your book) and chose their Proline Pearl Paper. It's beautiful... It's very much like Epson Luster.
I would say to anyone thinking of making a book, they have promotions all the time. Do not make your book at full price as at least every month there is a 20-30% sale.
Now, I have a project I did and working on creating a magazine. It's very easy with their BookWright software and I can't wait to see what it looks like. Just got to finish it.
Perhaps you could show us a pic or two of your book when you get it. :-)

@ Rich
I also put my book on Amazon and I would not again. there is no preview. I'm not known so nobody can find my book within the millions that are there. They are too expensive and how to get someone to review it if they don't buy it. Just my take on it.
I will admit I was lured by the thought that Amazon would carry it but you'd need a huge following and then market it really well to get sales there. Next time, I'll just sell it directly through Blurb and let my followers get it at a more decent price.

Rich:
Thanks for the info on Bookwright. I was trying to use the built-in Blurb software on Lightroom and was not impressed, but I downloaded Bookwright just now and see that it is pretty intuitive, so will give it a try. And although I did one book with Shutterfly, I realize now that one cannot publish and sell book via Shutterfly, but can with Blurb/Bookwright, including electronic versions, even with inline videos.

Maggie, <br> <br> Your wish is my Command! Here is the finished books(2) and a few comments on things I learned. <br> <br><a href='http://fineartamerica.com/featured/so-far-cover-rich-franco.html'><img src='http://fineartamerica.com/displayartwork.html?id=14645784&width=250&height=166' alt='Photography Prints' title='Photography Prints' style='border: none;'></a> <br> <br><a href='http://fineartamerica.com/featured/so-far-open-book-rich-franco.html'><img src='http://fineartamerica.com/displayartwork.html?id=14645805&width=249&height=166' alt='Photography Prints' title='Photography Prints' style='border: none;'></a> <br> <br><a href='http://fineartamerica.com/featured/so-far-back-cover-rich-franco.html'><img src='http://fineartamerica.com/displayartwork.html?id=14645813&width=249&height=166' alt='Photography Prints' title='Photography Prints' style='border: none;'></a> <br> <br>So the first thing I noticed when I received the books, was that I screwed up the cover. There is a bit of white cover that should be image, which I didn't catch. Also, on the revised version, I'll drop the title a bit lower and maybe enlarge it. And then decrease the font size on the lower right stuff. AND I might do a dust cover next too. <br> <br>Inside, color looks very good, maybe a tad light or bright, but still good. No issues there. The type and font size that I used was primarily for the benefit of my mother, who's 86 and has Macular Degeneration and uses a reading machine and about 300 magnifying glasses, all over her apt! I'll change the font size and maybe even the font it self. It's way to big for this book, which is the "large Landscape" 11x13". I also screwed up the first page, when I switched images and forgot to switch the titles and descriptions, which I thought were attached. A couple of minor punctuation errors too, but they will be fixed. <br> <br>Back cover looks good too, although I should have bleed the image a bit more on it. <br> <br>All in All, a good product and a nice professional job. <br> <br>Things not so happy with, that I found out, after the fact! <br> <br>1. Once you upload your book, you CANNOT MAKE ANY EDITS TO THAT BOOK! Which I find silly, since it seems that should be an easy thing to do. <br> <br>2. Once you have uploaded your book, you CANNOT PICK A SMALLER FORMAT and order addtional books. I was planning on getting 1 large book for my mother and then maybe 3-4 smaller landscape books, 1 for me and the others for family, but no way Jose! So I will need to completely re-design the smaller book, titles, descriptions, images etc. if I want to go ahead with that idea. I'm waiting to see another 20-30% off sale first. <br> <br>All right, if anyone has any questions and I can answer, let me know, thanks again for looking! <br> <br>Rich

Rich,
No changes once you upload is the reason why you have a preview to proof over and over again....I always take a day or two break from finishing to uploading.
The process of uploading means you are ready to order the book.
The preview mode is your friend...look at it with fresh eyes often!
In the past, I have had no issues making smaller versions of books...I have 3 different sizes right now of my Judaic collection.....
I'd contact customer service to resolve that.
Marlene,
NOW you tell me! LOL! Yeah, I was a bit blurry eyed by the tiem I sent it to Blurb.
"In the past, I have had no issues making smaller versions of books...I have 3 different sizes right now of my Judaic collection.....
I'd contact customer service to resolve that." Is this from Blurb? I talked to 1 support person AND then even emailed for a second opinion if I could just take the larger landscape and just have the computer reformat it to the smaller landscape and they ALL said no way Jose! My name is Rich!!! LOL!
What sizes/pages/prices do you think works to actually sell any books? I know my book is way to big/pages/expensive!
Rich
I've sold an equal amount of coffee table sized books ( 12"x12") and the smaller soft cover (7"x7")
In the last software I used, there was a button lower left of the workpage that allowed you to change the format.....
Go back into the software and look for it. I'll see if I can find it for you....
Rich,
you ABSOLUTELY can change the book size.
Go back into BookSmart and get into working mode ( i think it's an edit button )
TOP LEFT ICON is change the book size...click on that and you are good to go. ;)
