How can I be sure my work will not be copied and used without my knowledge?

Lock in up it in a dark closet and for sure, never, NEVER put in on the Internet, ANYWHERE!

There are a zillion threads on this topic, search copyright on the threads main page search box.

Anything put on the web, cyberspace, internet that is worth it's salt will be borrowed by somebody once it's seen. Some will go as far as to steal it, remove your name, and add theirs to it so that they can make a profit from your work.

You can officially copyright your work. Go here and see if that's what you want. http://www.copyright.gov/

With that said... you cannot be sure of anyone not using your work without your knowledge... even if it is officially copyrighted. You just do what you can to stop thieves by being responsible to make it as hard as possible for them.

Question: Who are you worried about specifically Debra?

you don't know. anyone can take the small image. they won't have the large image. if you put it online, anyone may take it. its the chance you have to take when you sell. those that steal, had no intention of buying anyway.

You have to weigh the pros and cons of selling your work via the net. Yes, if it is any good at all, it WILL be stolen, borrowed, plagiarized, etc...You have to be vigilant with google image searches to stay on top of where your work is on the net or you can choose to as Floyd puts it, lock it up in a closet and keep it safe. Not trying to be a smartie but that is just how it is. I know that in the two or so years that I have been selling online, I have gained much more than I have lost.

Unfortunately, the risk is a part of showing your images on the web for as soon as you put images up anywhere they can be stolen. Every time someone goes to a webpage their computer puts all the images in their temp folder for example and most browsers nowadays completely ignore the "no right click" code we do have in place. Besides which, anyone who visits can screenshot the pages.

However, your full images are nowhere on this site, only low resolution copies. Anyone who wishes to steal your images will do so even with watermarks and would not buy them. We have numerous posts about this in the discussions area. Visit there and put 'watermarks' in the discussion search

Same with me @Phyllis. I've gained so much more than I've lost.
Additionally, I've started letting go by peppering Tumblr and Instagram with low res photos and tell people that they can edit them and use them as they will as long as I get attribution. I don't always get my due, but I often do and it drives more traffic to my page.
A Tumblr-star shared one of his edits and I suddenly got 1000s of views and clicks in a day.
I do this to do my best controlling what's taken from me...
