Travel To Israel

I am planning a trip to Israel in May for 7 days and was looking for advice on how many days to spend in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv? I am planning on taking day trips from Jerusalem to the Dead Sea and maybe Jericho. So any advice on total number of days to stay in Jerusalem vs. Tel Aviv for photography would be appreciated. Thank you.

Plan at least a few for Jerusalem and the dead sea. Google Messda, a must shoot on the dead sea.

I agree! Climb Masada before dawn to shoot the sunrise over the Dead Sea! Jerusalem as much time as possible!
And say hey to my family in Tel Aviv! :)

Jerusalem and around is so interesting for photography, and as starting point for your planned day trips it is also ideal. You should stay there as long as you can, perhaps two days in Tel Aviv?
Many years ago I was in Israel for three weeks, stayed in Jerusalem, and a few days at the Dead Sea, made only a one day trip to Tel Aviv, but don't have the feeling I missed something not having been there for longer. - And, of course, depends on what you are interested in for photography.
Have a nice trip to Israel, and I hope I will see your photographs here on FAA, after you will be back home!
Take care.

Absolutely Masada, yes, like JC and Jessica suggested!

Right now I am thinking of skipping Tel Aviv because I only have 7 total days. Actually only 6 1/2 days because on day 1 by the time arrive and get to Jerusalem it will be around noon. After checking into my hotel and all will be early afternoon. So I was thinking:

Day 1 (1/2 day) - arrive Jerusalem
Days 2 & 3 Jerusalem
Days 3 & 4 Dead Sea Region
Days 5 & 6 Jerusalem
Day 7 fly out of Tel Aviv

Thought on day 5 & 6 to see more of Jerusalem and maybe some close surrounding areas if time permits.

For your style if photography the Arab markets in Jerusalem offer some great scenes

I hope so. I would like to see Tel Aviv but I don't want to stretch myself too thin or travel too much during the trip that it makes it annoying.

Tel Aviv is worth a day on the beach and an evening in the town; especially in May, when it's not yet too hot.

If i stay my last 2 days in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv is doable as a day trip from there, right?

Security at Ben Gurion is tight. Get there early on your trip home.

I read about that. Travel guides says to get there 3 hours before departure.

Sounds about right. I had an open ended ticket which lead to a two hour interrogation.

I would not want loose security at an Israeli airport.

Israel is a tiny place. I have not been, but know something about it.

Have fun.

Oh, they have VERY GOOD reasons for the security. El Al has some great security screening as well even in the US and that is why I flew them over the pond and puddle.

You wouldn't want loose security at ANY airport.

John.......if you are going to Tel Aviv try to spend a little time in Jaffa. Tel Aviv is great but Jaffa has some wonderful photographic opportunities that might suit your style really well. Do a google search on Jaffa.......it is adjacent to Tel Aviv!

Thanks Fraida. Jaffa does look like a cool place to photograph!

I have been to Israel several times, John, you will see what a beautiful land and country it is there. My favorite place is the Western Wall or Wailing Wall .... each time you go there it is a different scene with different people ... always quite a moving experience, and great story telling for a camera in explaining man to man.

Just from reading this thread and doing more research online, I am realizing 7 days is really not enough time to see everything I want to. Since I can not extend my trip, I am going to have to concentrate my time in a specific area and then come back another time to see the regions I missed.
