What Do You Think?

About the picture itself. I don't care if it prints or picture quality. I want to know how It makes u feel and what you think when you see it! And nothing about me or who I am! all in fun! What do you see?

Reminds me of a certain pub I was at years ago where the tables were all covered in white paper with boxes of crayons for the adults not kids and you were encouraged to draw on the table cloths (paper). It was fun!!

Blaine,

As far as I see it......

There are artworks that defy the thought process to be potent.....Your piece certainly fits in that group.

Blaine, very much like the piece with a few comments and suggestions. Love the arrow concept, like the way you brought them from the background to the face. Like the division of the face and the overall use of line. You might consider layering your picture somewhat. Laying down colors and areas prior to the colored lines. Look at Soutine, Ensor and Nolde close up and see the layers created by these artist. Please be careful with posting work on the threads for comments, you will get them both helpful and not. Check out the work from the artist making these comments and see what you think of their work. In other words evaluate the evaluators. If you find yourself connecting with their work then pay more attention to what they say. If you think their work is garbage think about what they said and why then toss it if need be.

I think... you're interested in doing work that includes multiple, superimposed heads. Picasso was interested in that, too. My understanding is that at one point, Picasso was interested in portraying the concept of time in his work. Two or more views of the same head, superimposed on each other, indicate two different points in time.

I also think you were reading the thread on composition. You have a very strong vertical defining the right-hand third of your composition. The arrows look like "leading lines." Leading lines aren't usually broken up, they're continuous, but the way you did this, these definitely are leading lines.

The curves and motion lead your eye around the page. That's good composition. It's not quite an S composition... you've got two different S's going on, both broken up, which may explain, in part, why some of the viewers find this work visually disturbing and unrestful. Also, the diagonal lines are unrestful. Also your choice of colors is unrestful.

You have three center of interest (1) left eye (2) right eye (3) black nostril. None of the natural "centers of interest" are placed where the eye would normally come to rest in a composition - and they compete with each other for the viewer's attention, another factor that contributes to the sense of unrest. The viewer's eye bounces back and forth between the two "bull's eye" compositions of the eyes, and sometimes dips down to the dark nostril.

Putting objects in the "wrong" place, slightly off from where people's brains normally expect the objects to be, creates a sense of unrest. Picasso knew exactly what he was doing when he placed facial features where the viewer would not expect them to be. Your placement of human facial features creates a sense of unrest.

The pupil (dark area) size: A human body-language thing: I once read a psychology article that found people see large pupils as friendly and relaxing. Small pupils are seen as hostile and tense. Historically, some fashion models have taken various drugs to make their pupils unnaturally large, which makes them seem more sexy and appealing. Think about how much people like big puppy-dog eyes. The pupils in this picture are almost pin-points. Hostile & stressy.

You might want to read up on color theory - you naturally gravitate toward using a lot of color contrast, which is very visually interesting, nothing boring about your use of color, but the way you create so much contrast, especially in this piece, tends to to create a sense of unrest,

So... this is a very unrestful painting - which is why people don't like it. If the point is to make people feel visually overwhelmed, tired and off-balance, you've done it brilliantly. If that was not your intent, then you might want to think about how you could use line, color, contrast, and composition to calm your work down a bit.

The only thing in the painting that is restful is the balance. The "weight" is in the lower right - the darker area of red weights the painting. Dark areas tend to create weight - lighter areas tend to create a sense of lightness, you can use that concept to create balance in your painting.

That's my critique. If anyone sees it a different way... feel free to say so.

I see a person who is in great pain, taking everything in at such a rate that his mind is no longer working. There is no output of information, he is like those people that cannot forget anything they read and do, Hyperthymesia here is the definition of someone with this Talent, Infliction, Gift...............

Individuals with hyperthymesia can recall almost every day of their lives in near perfect detail, as well as public events that hold some personal significance to them. Those affected describe their memories as uncontrollable associations, when they encounter a date, they "see" a vivid depiction of that day in their heads. Recollection occurs without hesitation or conscious effort.
So I wonder is this a Self Portrate of yourself Blaine or were you just Doodling at the diner table.??
