A Nice Surprise

I google my name regularly. Between me and the other Marlene Burns of Arizona, we dominate the others.I show up for at least a dozen pages.

For the last several months, I've been concentrating on the descriptive phrase "urban abstracts" rather than my name....I'm so pleased that when you click on images after doing a google search, I have 2 images out of the first 8 appearing on google....10 on the first page.
I have never put all my eggs in one basket....it paid off.

Who else checks phrases on google and finds their images?

I have, Marlene, but I can't remember which ones. I think my "foggy docks" show up with that phrase.....

Thats cool Marlene, just checked it out! For me the phrase would be "Suburban Primitive Art". There is an artist from Florida who also works under that label.

Very cool Marlene! Some of mine show up in searches on "Door County" and "Milwaukee Art Museum".

I haven't googled any phrases but I did my name and found a William Tomsa on Facebook ---not me.

But the interesting thing was the Township of MIddletown Sewage Authority (Bedford, NJ) has a logo that has on it in all caps T O M S A. (http://www.tomsanj.com/ )

NIce! So now I'm associated with a sewage plant! LOL.

make sure your history is erased, or it will show you what you want to see.

though i do that with my name, type in mike savad and you'll get associated things with my name. but the history is misleading.

I get a lot of what Marlene is talking about and I don't generally google her. Stalker!!!

How cool ... I never thought of that ... just found several when I googled images for Old Bedford Village!! This could be fun!!!

Mike is right on - google shows you exactly what you want to see based on your browsing history - so you come to your profile here, pixels, AW site, or you post your images to social media and google will know what you are looking for...

Best thing to do for accurate results is to use a computer that is completely not yours - great place is the local library.

i just shut off the history - and my friends history (an option that looks at everyone on your friend list and adds their history). all that was shut off, or at least it should be.

I clear my history at the end of the day and then google first thing in the morning ;)

Lois, beyond fun, it's important...more people are using google than faa's search engine.....

Mike Savad

you clear your google history at the end of each day? its not the browser history, google has its own.

yes, I know, Mike. If I'm going to care about google searches, I want it to be accurate....it's all of two clicks and takes 5 seconds!

I get some long dead actor and some photographer from England.

Nikolyn McDonald

If you've never done this, how can you clear months, even years of search activity easily?

Hi Nikki!
You must tell me all about your trip!! I was hoping we could connect, but maybe next time :)
Here's how you clear google search history..it's really easy....go to tools and pick browsing history...you then have the choice to delete by the hour up to forever!

Mike, Thanks for the Google History tip.

I get three pages of Google search with 25 results. Number three
on the list is my sister Eve. After that the rest is just me.

For Google Images I get four rows of images with only 3 images that are not mine.
I have a small portfolio so that is good for now.

I don't understand the Google history thing?? Why would you want to delete searching and browsing activity?

David Lane

Thanks Marlene a great way to see if your tags are getting you seen in a category!

Mike Savad

google history keeps track of things you looked at and then sends those ideas back to you. which is great if you want chocolate cake recipes, and not, chocolate cake companies. it will show the recipe's because that's what you have a history for. and if your friends are into the same thing, you'll get even more.

however

if you are making your own and you want to see how you really rank, with the history on, because you were on your own page a 1000 times, your number one. and then gloat that your number one. but your not, your number 6799, because your histories influence your results.

so while you think your on page 1, your not at all. but then again the raw results, where i might be on page 1, i might be on page 25 for another person. basically if you want to know where you rank, turn the history off. its also rather invasive, people will know exactly what you've been looking for, for as long as the history is on and your logged in. youtube - same thing. they know what you watch the most. it could be used against you or not, hard to know. i keep it off.

Mike, where do I keep it off? It says: Your search history is currently empty.

Nikolyn McDonald

Thanks, Marlene and Mike. Traveling today so I won't work this out for a few days, but I really do appreciate it. And yes, we had a great time - except I fought a sinus infection the entire time. Beautiful country and wonderful weather and just enough time to see and do what we wanted to. No time to stop for coffee, though :)

Mike Savad

if its empty, it might be off already. that link i had up there, i think is the switch. otherwise it would show your history. they also track where your phone goes if you have android. i only turned mine back on in case i lose the phone. it keeps a rather accurate history of your where abouts.

Thanks for getting it, David Lane!
Jessica, if you use google, you will notice ads for things you've searched for, along the sides of some pages.....
I'm pretty sure this came up a week or so ago regarding domain names...If you search for jessicaisthebest.com and do not purchase it, the next time you look for it, it's ranking ( and price) may go up!
The other issue is space that history could conceivably take up on your computer. Although convenient to see pages you've been to this week, storing all that could tax the memory.
I have a friend who loves the convenience of keeping her histories forever but the computer hardly works anymore....

Marlene Burns

for the future, you can just type in history dot google dot com. if you are signed into google, the most you will have to do is go to tools to remove the history.
Nikki, travel safely!

Nikolyn McDonald

OK, I found a place to clear everything. Here are my options:
1. Browsing and Download History
2. Form and Search History
3. Cookies
4. Cache
5. Active Logins
6. Offline Website Data
7. Sikte Preferences

They are not numbered - I did that to make it easier for people to advise me. Please advise :)

Go to history.google.com

Delete history
Then pick time frame

Nikolyn McDonald

I'm using Mozilla Firefox. I just don't see "Tools"
I feel really stupid. Must be right in front of my face. I'll take a screenshot to show you what the screen looks like with I do history.google.com

Nikkie,

Not the browser, the portal, Google, not Firefox.

Firefox is not really sending you what you see. Google is. Google simply keeps regurgitating what
you like or have been to already, your own art. Edit: Good to see you got it.

See if you really are number one or just way down behind others with your name.

Addition: Just read David L's comment about seeing if your tags are being read in a category.
That is somewhat harder for me. My subject matter and the Romantic Digital Fine Art schick are
not at all rare. I'd bet Mike was rarer in his HDR at one point. Digital art is a harder sell that is very common
online if not in galleries. JMO

Last year I had a local sale by someone when my name came up for a search she put in google. She took a look at my AW site and saw I was local and contacted me through my email here.
I did a custom photo for her and made a good amount of money.

Nikolyn McDonald

I am signed in to my google account. This is what my screen looks like. There is nothing else on it. I simply do not see "tools"

Nikolyn McDonald

I do.
OK. I removed items since the beginning of time. Here's hoping. And thanks.

What are you doing up??

Marlene Burns

Oh good!
I'm an insomniac...I'm up most of the time, Nikki....so glad you found it. Now you can check with confidence that your google history is more accurate.
I keep a google tab open on the computer, so it's pretty easy to clean and check.
