I have rhythm, and a natural athletic ability. Can't play any instruments, nor can I sing (which doesn't prevent me from doing it anyway).

i have been in bands and i have six guitars, amps, drum set. i love and enjoy music and guitar it has been along road of learning and practice like drawing and painting there is a learning curve and it never stops its has to be fun for u or y do it? and if you want to learn u have to tell yourself "i am good" "i can do this". Your body follows what your mind. If you tell youself "I'm lame" "I can't" you already gave up even if you have talent.

I was in construction until 40yrs old and I now work for IBM in the IT field. I learned how to play guitar at 30yrs old and took up photography at 48 yrs old ..... Your never too old to learn something new.

I used to play guitar. Took lessons for 3 years in my teens.
I can't sing, but that doesn't stop me from doing so in my car. Same with playing drums, I can't but I do great air drums in the car.

I am physically lame in every sense of the word. Only kid in the entire high school that failed gym every year. I trip over fly poop. I have a metal plate and 8 screws in my ankle from dropping a motorcycle on it, so now I fall over at random.

My best talent? I raised two incredible young adults.

I completely failed at music. I tried unsuccessfully to learn to play the guitar three times. When it comes to music....I AM LAME!

I know all the words to popular songs of my day. People often ask if I can tell them the words and NOT sing. That just about sums it up.

You'd have to agree, that anything can be learned.
Whether one learns depends on deep curiosity. The rest is easy.....inspired!
A little natural rhythm helps,too...! And a good ear.....but only if the neighbour can't hear you.......

I could not survive without music....

I am, at least that's what the kids tell me. The clincher was embarrassing them crying at the Disney movies. Beyond redemption I'm sure.

I've been in a bunch of drum bands and I love singing. I'm sure I could learn piano if I put my mind to it but I found guitar too hard on my fingers. I've composed some music too.

"Your body follows what your mind. If you tell youself "I'm lame" "I can't" you already gave up even if you have talent."

Blaine, I find myself agreeing with you whole heartedly on that statement as it is a reflection of the following quote from "The New Psycho-Cybernetics" an updated version of the original book by Dr. Maxwell Maltz:

"Human beings always act and feel and perform in accordance with what they imagine to be true about themselves and their environment."

I had to transfer out of guitar class in high school or my GPA would have suffered greatly! I was falling behind fast, and it wasn't for lack of trying. I can only suspect I have some physical limitations that prevent me from becoming proficient at the guitar, maybe something to do with a stiff wrist and lack of accurate tone recognition, tuning the guitar was always frustrating and torturous!

Yes in one eye and one leg, and kidney, liver and adrenal gland I hear.. my body can't deal with sugar..as for music.. I played the piano most of my life after being forced to take lessons but always when in solitude..I love to compose songs that no one ever heard but maybe once.I was first made attempts to play trumpet when young moved to french horn where I was first chair french horn player for a year or so..Loved the french horn..had an accident that damaged my lips and muscles in them destroyed my ability to play.

Played the piano until I had children ,then to busy with work to play and over the years my fingers fell to severe rheumatoid arthritis and lost the dexterity to play after being to busy with work over the years..tried to ,or maybe didn't try to hard to play guitar..as the person above said, I gave up in my mind before my mind could know it could. So never did more than play Sunshine of Your Love ,by the cream..Art.. well ,as a child I wasn't encouraged to do art..it was a thing to be done as fun but not a serious thing..so I encouraged myself since I was creative to do everything I could to nurture that creative side..

To this day im not sure it amounted to much but others tell me differently ..although I wasn't a career artist.. I was a introvert artist for the most part of my life and that worked.Lame..yes in so many ways..lame in appearance, lame in spirit sometimes .. and lame in soul. ,desire is strong in so many ways ,but lame is stronger.. in a nutshell, lame can be defined in some many ways. My career I choose ,not lame, my personal life ,sometimes maybe,my desires lame...but even lame..my desire to learn is not lame...my insatiable questions and quest for knowledge defeats my lameness .Although maybe never be the master of my quest at least I have desire to conquer my lameness although it may never happen, and the road is long, I made an attempt at trying to conquer it..which it goes to what was said by someone above ..to not try is to accept defeat from the very start. If your mind is convinced so is your body and soul..you have already failed.

I played the violin in elementary school. It was not a pretty thing. Sort of like somebody plucking a cat, one day I got my violin out of the cupboard and it was smashed. A sign from above perhaps?

Elizabeth Bathory

To tell you the truth.I sucked at trumpet.. but somehow the band master knew french horn was better or he had to many trumpet players ,whatever the reason im glad that he moved me into french horn. After that I loved it..and was proud but when I had that accident it destroyed my muscles used to play for so many years..after that I could not even whistle..oh well.. maybe meant as a sign from above as well....

I play guitar a lot and mostly songs i made. I play open Mics. The hardest thing for me was playing in front of a audience. And this is something that the more you do it the better you get. The more comfortable I get the better I play because all the other jargon is not there and I'm focused on the song itself and I enjoy it myself, and more and more people ask me to play! If you don't enjoy and think your lame don't do it! If your lame and enjoy it play by yourself and don't worry about it!

To answer the original question: Are you lame? ..., NO

I think that I have had the genetic makeup to gain skill in almost anything I tried -- I have just run out of time.

@ Robert...I have often pondered the question..would you really want to live forever?Everyone jump on that and say yes.. but what after heaven and earth and the universe passes away and what if you could not die.. would that not be a terrible fate?all that you have ever known and everything you have ever known dust?

I pulled my back last year doing something stupid, and I still get pain down my right leg from time to time as a result. In that regard I'm a bit lame.

I've long wanted to learn to play the guitar but have yet to get around to it. Time is a governing factor.

David King

I feel your pain David B, literally. I can't stand for more than a few minutes at a time.

David Bridburg

Ronald,

I have composed a lot of music over the decades, I do not play an instrument.
I only have imagination.

A couple of years from now when things settle down time wise I am going to take
up the piano. My mother was telling me some weeks ago that there are online
lessons, how to play by ear online for $49. Basically you join the website and
all the materials are there for the taking endlessly.

We have the Hart School of Music in West Hartford. I might, DEPENDING ON MONEY,
take a few theory classes. I have me some ideas.

I have a very bad auditory problem. I am not sure that it effects music. But it might slow down
how I figure out sounds initially. Some folks at a very young age know a C chord from an E cord
right off the bat. I can tell the difference. I can not label the chords YET as they are played. Chords, notes,

I do have a schmattering of knowledge in music. I know about the architecture of classical music composition.

On a separate note concerning time. My project schedule to write some patents has been shortened. I am gaining mastery
of the classroom videos faster than I thought, and a special academic database that anyone can use I am also gaining mastery
of at a quicker pace than I thought possible. I had thought this project would take a minimum of a year and a half of hard work. It
will take a matter of months. I then need a few video classes on how to write patents. I am hoping a reputable law school has the videos
online in a classroom format on how to write patents. Bottom line this is taking far less time than what I had assumed.

Wonder if there is a "Karoke" expert here on FAA. Seen some good ones come out of the crowd here and there and some famous ones imitating Elvis.

"Danny Boy" is one song that will stop a fight in an Irish bar. A Dylan song will get you into a fight.

I tried to sing "Born Free" by Monroe but start to cry each time. It's full of power for a song!

Jean, I bett he never watched that classic Twilight Zone about the guy who was 2,000 years old and the reality of living forever.....

To answer the question, nope. I was so lucky that my parents and grandparents raised me to be exposed to all of the arts and to take as many classes as I wished in art, drama and music...I loved them all and got a great basic working knowledge to keep my interests alive and well for a lifetime. The most important thing I learned was that with some passion and work, you can develop many artistic skills!

John Wills

I play guitar, bass, and keys, or should I say I used to until I started doing art in 2013. Haven't touched an instrument since because I love creating art more, which surprises me because I used to love creating music. Style is medium rock/jazz fusion and mostly instrumental. I'll just post a few songs if anyone wants to listen.

I love it all music, drawing , landscaping my yard, gardening too! I think it's all art and you get what you put into it! Entertain yourself first

"I paint and draw, play with photography, have some but limited skills in sculptural stuff."

You started off by naming about four art topics you have potential to be good at. Who said you had to be good at everything? I'm sure you are good enough at other things which don't happen to be art related, (although personally, I believe there is a potential for everything to be art related. It just flies under the radar).

You've discovered some things you're not good at. Now discover the things you ARE good at. Just keep in mind that just because you may not be good at it yourself, that shouldn't prevent you from enjoying it like millions of others. You are not limited to just enjoying it by the way, but you can support it, promote it, critique it, write about it, teach it, etc.

Thankfully, there are plenty of things in the world waiting for us to discover, and a few more we can invent!

But if you try sometimes you just might find
You get what you need " ~ Rolling Stones

Brian, it is true I am good at a variety of things, I have learned to kayak and am decent there, I like to cook, I am decent at several sports....Getting old there! I like to listen to music, my entire family plays something except for me. Not upset about it, just lame!

Brian Wallace

I wouldn't call it "lame" Ronald. Everyone has been "gifted" at something. We're (thankfully) not all gifted at the same things. This is the way it was meant to be and makes things much more interesting.

Robert Kernodle

@ Robert...I have often pondered the question..would you really want to live forever?Everyone jump on that and say yes.. but what after heaven and earth and the universe passes away and what if you could not die.. would that not be a terrible fate?all that you have ever known and everything you have ever known dust?

If a person lived forever, then he/she would have a mind that would eventually learn to adapt to the baggage of memory. The human body exchanges every molecule of its substance every (I forgot how many) years. In effect, we would not live forever, but we would renew forever. The mind of an eternal would be very different from the mind of a mortal, ... so much so that many people cannot even imagine it. I think I can, and so I would say, "Bring on the years, ... I can handle the truth." Make new connections to replace the dusty ones.

And, by the way, I guess I sort of lied. PHYSICALLY,... I AM sort of lame now (which I mentioned one other time a year or so ago) - ruptured AVM in 2010 - permanent neurological lameness - makes me stagger, stumble, loose balance - use a crutch in public, so people don't think I'm a lame drunk.

As a former dancer, insaniac athlete gone brain damaged [I dramatize] - I think that I have some hint of what it's like to recover from nostalgic memories of a dusty past, as life goes on indeterminately, always on the edge, while the inescapable flaws of human physical structure assert themselves unpredictably.

So, ... more precisely now, MENTALLY, I am NOT lame [some might disagree (^_^)]. Neurologically, I AM lame [most would agree].
